To start the game, each guest draws a slip from the box, and he must hunt for the article named on the slip, and this article only. If he happens to find some thing on another person's slip, he must keep mum. The party giver asks all the guests to line up Indian-file, facing him. The idea is to follow the leader's actions exactly. He holds up his plate, underside away from him, and with one finger makes a circle on the back of it. Then he makes a circle around his nose or eye. Next, he taps the back of the plate in two or three spots and makes similar taps on his nose or forehead. He marks an X on the plate, then an X on his chin or anything similar that he likes. The guests do all of these things, too, looking at no one except the leader. Now the fun comes when the game's over and the guests discover that their plates had been blackened on the back with a burning candle before the game began and each face is marvelously smudged.
