Worried Parents Seek Formula For Charlottesville Schools Charlottesville, Va. -TPD-A growing group of worried par ents met into the early morn ing hours here today, groping for a formula to get their schools open and ignoring the lawyers and judges involved in the South's struggle over integration o Negroes and whites in the classroom. Not far away, vocal but deadly serious white suprem acists sat around the table of an all-night restaurant and talked of "fighting to the end." Anxious clergyman closed their Sunday school rooms to possibly transplanted public school classes, fearful their churches might be sucked into a steaming political vortex. Will Keep Order On the well-manicured es tates ringing this city of 27, 000 in the heart of Virginia's fashionable hunt country, the affluent land owners for the most part took a relatively de tached view of the crisis. Most of their children go to private schools. Mayor Thomas J. Michie listened to all sides and seem ed to sense that regardless of the ultimate legal develop ments, his people would keep order and live with the final outcome, no matter how" od ious. There was even a suggestion from a few of the mayor's constituents that Charlottes ville might defy the state gov ernment and try to comply with a federal district court order that the only high school in town and one of the elementary schools should ad mit Negro students- 12 out of an enrollment of 1,675-im-mediately. This county,' Albemarle, voted twice for President Eisenhow er, but in the current school controversy some of the Re publican leaders are going be yond many of the top Demo crats in their demands for a last-ditch stand against inte gration. Today, such was the para dox of Charlottesville, home of Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of -In dependence; home of the Uni versity of Virginia built under the supervision of Jefferson in 1819. The city school board de layed by one week the open ing of Lane High school and Venable Elementary school af ter U. S. District Judge John Paul ordered 12 Negro pupils integrated into the two schools. A new but growing organi zation of parents - The Com mittee for Public Education- met for hours here Tuesday night after petitioning the city council and the governor to open the two schools. Other parents, although small in number, have been entering their children in schools of surrounding towns. Arlington County, Va., Judge Delays School Integration Alexandria, Va. -(UPD- A fed eral judge today postponed in tegration in Arlington County, Va., schools until January and limited to four the number of Negroes to be admitted to white classrooms. Bryan upheld the Ar lington school board's rejec tion of applications by 26 other Negroes for transfer to white schools. He approved four of the board's five grounds for rejecting these ap plications . Not Hurtful The judge . said, however, that the same grounds did not apply in the case of four ap plicants for transfer to all- white Stratford Junior High school. He said they were eli gible. In ordering postpone ment, of their transfer, Bryan said "This short deferment will not be hurtful. Indeed, if the basic problem can .be solved by that time, the price is not too dear." The judge's ruling postpon ed a showdown in Arlington on Virginia's massive resis tance laws which already have resulted in the closing of one high school at Front Roy al, Va. Reasons Cited In the case of the 26 Ne groes denied admittance to white schools, the Arlington board had cited low academic accomplishment, psychdlogi cal problems, adaptability, residence outside the specific school area, and overcrowd ing at the white school they wanted to enter. Judge Bryan accepted all of these grounds except the one concerned with the psy chological difficulties involv ed. He said that ground was based on the pupils' race. In upholding their rejection how ever, he said the other grounds were not based sole ly on racial considerations. MORE AID FOR JORDAN Amman, Jordan (UPD The United States gave Jordan an other $5 million in aid this month, raising the total for the 1958 fiscal year to $24 million, a U. S. Internment Camps Due for Terrorists Paris -(UPD- Algerian terror ists may be rounded up and sent to special internment camps soon to stamp out the wave of violence that began in France more than three weeks ago, informed sources said today. These measures would be taken under " the emergency powers provisions of Premier Charles de Gaulle's new con stitution, the sources said. France votes on the Constitu tion Sept. 28 and its approval is considered fairly certain. The sources said the French government is considering a series of severe new police measures in its war against Algerian rebels who opened a campaign of terror in France Aug. 25. The mood of . the French public was pictured as harden ing against negotiations with the rebels who have, been fighting for independence and against the proposed constitu tional reform program. . J.-OIPD-The oil- slicked waters of Newark bay- early today surrendered the last of the three wrecked Jersey Central Railroad pass enger coaches and its contents of six more bodies. Salvage crews immediately began work preparatory to raising one of the ill-fated train's two locomotives which investigators expected would yield instrument records pro viding more clues to the cause of the tragedy that took an estimated 37 to 40 lives. The big diesel locomotive was ex pected to yield one or two more bodies. 27 Corpuse Found The six bodies recovered with the last . coach brought to 27 the number of corpses found so far. Coast Guard cut ters searched . through the night for two more reported seen floating on the bay near the Jersey City Yacht club. At least 10 persons still are known to be missing. A rail road, spokesman said calls to his office from relatives indi cate as many as, 13 may still be missing. In addition, about 40 per sons were injured late Mon day morning when the train rolled non-stop through three signal lights,, through a de rail switch and off an open drawbridge into 50 feet of water. Further Tests Planned The body of the engineer, Lloyd Wilburn, 63, found shortly after the wreck, was to undergo further tests to de termine definitely whether he was dying when the train missed the signals. An autopsy Tuesday indicated he had a heart attack. Still a. deep mystery was why the fireman, who is re quired to ride beside the en gineer and double-check him by calling out all signals seen along the track, did not take over if Wilburn suffered a seizure.
