TO MAIL TRIBUNE, M.dforJ, Oregon, Monday, September 8. 1958 Mufflers Becoming Biggest Headache For U.S. Motorists Detroit - (LTD - Mufflers are fast becoming the biggest headache for American mo torists but at least one manu facturer hopes to do some thing about it in 1959. Ward's Automotive Reports said replacement parts sales records show motorists spent more than $290 million on new mufflers during 1957, placing it second only to spark -plugs in dollar value of parts sales that year. Indian Confesses Killing of Wife ' The Dalles (UPD - A Warm Springs Indian, Douglas Jake, 55, confessed Sunday that he beat his wife to death follow ing a quarrel Saturday at a campsite 20 miles northwest of Maupin, Wasco County Dis trict Attorney Harry Hogan said. The body of the woman, Ethel Jake, 50, was discovered along a creek bank Saturday. ' Hogan said Jake related the two had been drinking heav ily for several days while 'camped out and during a quar rrel, Jake said he struck the .woman on the head with a wine bottle. Au autopsy showed she died from the blows to the head. GOLD HILL Value of Training Proven Br MRS. CLYDE KELL Gold Hill The value of J3oy Scout training in life sav Jng was realized by many one day recently while a crowd of about 50 people were swim ming in the Rogue river under the Gold Hill bridge t When the lifeless body of a California youth was taken from the water, Charles John son, an Eagle Scout who had received his Boy Scout Life guard badge at ' Camp Mc- Lightning Kills Two Children Big Bear Lake, Calif.-flTD- Two children of former All America football star Bob Reinhard were killed by light ning Sunday. A third was in jured seriously. ' Mark Lawrence, 7, and his sister, Trudy Lee, 13, died when lightning struck the ply wood building in which they had taken refuge from a sud den storm. Diana, 14, was partially paralyzed and pos sibly blinded in one eye. Reinard, at the time, was rowing ashore with another .son, Richard, 10. Reinhard was a star tackle at the University of Califor nia from 1939-41. He was un aware his children were vic tims of the bolt until he breached the building. He placed the three chil dren in the back of his sta 'tion wagon and drove for aid while Harvey Petersen, 17, of the nearby community of Fawnskin administered artifi cial respiration. Firemen at Fawnskin and - Big Bear also administered oxygen. Mark and Trudy were pronounced dead on arrival at Santa Anita hospital at Lake Arrowhead. Diana was hos pitalized. Reinhard, now manager of a Los Angeles automotive works, left their home at La Crescenta, a residential sec tion near Los Angeles, about two weeks ago for a vacation here. Tillamook Woman Held for Murder Tillamook -ITD A 21-year-old woman has been arrested on a first degree murder charge in connection with the death of a newborn baby whose body was found here Friday morning. District Attorney John W. Hathaway identified the sus pect as Leilani Bathe. She is being held in the county jail without bail, Hathaway said. Police said the child, a male, was found in an apple box at the corner of 11th and Ivy streets in Tillamook wrapped in a blanket. The child was the victim of stab bing, officials said. H20 From Gas Drum Won't Help Getaway Milwaukee, Wis. - (UPD Someone siphoned 20 gallons of liquid from a gasoline drum at a street repair pro ject Friday. When the thief puts his loot in his own gasoline tank, he will learn fast -that the gaso line drum contained water used by a paving crew. 1958 Sales To Rise And the statistical agency reported sales of mufflers dur ing 1958 were expected to rise between 10 and 12 per cent, an increase which will close some of the gap between spark plugs and mufflers. Actually, sales of all re placement parts increased substantially and appeared headed for a new all-time record during 1958. This was due to the fact that motorists were keeping their cars long er during the recession and because more cars were on the road. But the sharp rise in muf fler replacement stood out from the normal rise caused by those factors. Muffler Life Drops An engineer for one of the "big three" auto companies said the life of mufflers has dropped 50 per cent during the postwar years. He said this was caused by the use of higher-octane gaso lines and more short trips by motorists. The higher-octane gasolines has a greater amount of acidity which eats through mufflers much faster; he said. Short trips cause moisture to form in mufflers but the cars never become hot enough to evaporate the moisture, he explained, leav ing the moisture to rust through the muffler. Laughlin a few weeks ago, re alized immediately that arti ficial respiration should be ap plied correctly and that time should not be wasted. Charles said to his knowledge only one other person (unidenti fied) at the scene, besides him self, knew how to apply arti ficial respiration correctly. The Gold Hill youth continued to administer artificial respi ration until professional help arrived, and until they could adjust their equipment. This was the first time a drowning had occurred at this location for over 20 years. . Charles is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Johnson, Fifth avenue, Gold Hill. He first learned to swim when he was eight years old, at the Haw thorne swimming" pool in Med ford. It was through the ef forts of Mrs. Paul Molloy, Gold Hill, that the . school buses were first used to trans port children to Medford for the swimming lessons. Charles' Scouting began when he joined the Cub Scouts of which he was a con tinuous member for three years before becoming a Scout of Troop No. 43. His train ing in first aid began when he was 11 years old. The Jun ior Red Cross was taught here by Harry Lewis, who was state industrial accident in structor for Red Cross first aid classes. While at Boy Scout camp, Charles passed his Boy Scout life saving test for that merit badge. Leon "Punk" McDou gal, Medford, was waterfront director at that time. Charles interest in swim ming and the essentials of first aid continued after he became a member of the Gold Hill Explorer Post No, 43. Vaughn Whitmore, Gold Hill, was responsible for obtaining the local Explorer Post, to give the local youths an oppor tunity to continue in advanced. Scouting programs. Robert Schmidt, who recently was ap pointed boys' councilor for the Jackson county juvenile de tention home, is advisor for the Gold Hill post. The Vet erans of Foreign Wars is the sponsoring organization for the Scouts and Post No. 43. Charles will be a sophomore at Crater High school this fall. Besides his Scouting and school activities, he has been a carrier for the Medford Mail Tribune the past five years. He now serves customers on both Gold Hill routes one and two, within the city limits. While he is turning out for football, his substitutes are David Kell and Eobby Allison. Gladstone Man To . Parent Role in Suit Involving Child - The parent can be involved in a legal controversy either because his child is injured or because his child injures another. Evidence indicates that the injuries will cause total incapacity for five years and about 60 per cent reduction in earning capacity after that. Medical and hospital expenses have been paid by Sonny's father, and further expenses are anticipated. The father sues Bob to recover for both Gangland Slaying Studied by Police New York - UPD - Police today sought a solution to the gangland-style slaying of John Robilotto, a leading under world figure. Robilotto, 54, also known as Johnny Roberts, was found on an East Flatbush street in Brooklyn early Sunday. He had been shot in the head four times with a .38 caliber pistol. He had been a prime su spect for three years in the 1951 killing of gambler Willie Moretti in Cliffside Park, N.J. A murder indictment event ually was dropped for lack of evidence. Conscientious Cop Gives Himself Ticket 'Petroskey, Mich. .-(UPD-Po-liceman Charles Laubrich paid a $25 fine and $4.30 in costs Friday for failure to have his squad car under con trol. Laubrich fell asleep at the wheel while on patrol and knocked over a utility pole. He gave himself a ticket and summons. Is That So? The "cabbit" is supposedly a cross between a rabbit and a cat, and while it is true there are some cats that hop like rabbits, there is about as much, evidence to support that ancestry as there is for the alleged ancestry of the "Maine coon cat." The Maine coon-cat is sup posed to result from the mat ing of a cat and a racoon. It is a handsome animal, but the only suggestion of a rac coon in the one I saw was a certain quality in the coat. It had thick, long silky hair and bushy tail but without rings. Its qualities as a mous- er were excellent, and its lux urious hair, as well as its ap pearance, suggested a strong strain of Angora. Though the Angora, now lumped with the Persian un der the title of Long Hair, is a luxury cat, he can be an excellent mouser. He may have acquired certain luxury attitudes and characteristics from a life of ease in Turkish seraglios of Angora, but he hasn't lost the ability to fend for himself when thrown on his own. Historically speak ing, it is only a short time since the Turks brought him with them from Central Asia where his ancestors were cap tured as the "manul" or Pallas cat of the desert areas. Incidentally, how the An gora got its name is because those Turks who settled around the city of Angora, some 200 miles from Con stantinople, soon discovered that not only their cats but other animals were improving mightily. The change was par ticularly noticeable in their coats. Peculiarity in Atmosphere "The fineness of their hair may perhaps be ascribed to some peculiarity in the atmos phere," one observer wrote, "for it is remarkable that the cats, dogs and other animals of the country are to a cer tain extent affected in the same way, and that they all lose much of their distinctive beauty when taken from their native districts." Whether the Maine coon cat's dominant ancestor was an Angora I, of course, don't know. Since it is the father's duty to support his child, the wrongs of Bob, which have increased the cost of that support, may be re covered by the parent. Award To Child However, future medical expense costs would be award ed to the child and not to the father, who might use such funds before they were needed for the child's medi cal expenses. Loss of the child's earning capacity is a detriment to the parent during the period of minority and the parent may recover such . loss. Loss of earning "capacity after major ity, however, can be claimed only by the child. He is also the only one who can recover for pain and suffering which are personal to him. Suppose, however, that Sonny injured Bob. Sonny's father is not liable merely because he is the parent. He may be liable if he himself has been negligent by know ingly permitting his property, such as a car, to be used as the base of operations for a damage-causing operation. 'Family Car' Doctrine In many states, courts have created the so-called "family car" doctrine, whereby those using the family automobile on normal business and plea sure trips are deemed to be agents of the parent. In other states, the owner of an automobile is liable for damage done by one (whether child or not) who drives with the owner's consent; in still other states, a parent must sign a child's application for a driver's license, and, by the signing, assumes liability for damages done in such driving.
