SOTA of ficials also stated that it was his very low elapsed time (the total time it took him to cover the one-fourth mile drag strip from a standing start) of 9.3 seconds that was the outstanding feature of his spectacular races. This 9.3 is the second-fastest ever re corded by a gasoline powered car in the world. The only man thac has traveled the one-fourth mile faster is the man who beat him in the race for top-eliminator at the na tionals. Other Top Dragsters Sponsored by the National Hot Rod association, the championship races held in Oklahoma City were limited to 500 of the top hot-rods in the United States. It was of this 500 that Cheatham came out second best. In addition to Cheatham, SOTA officials stated that several other top dragster en tries are expected to enter the meet and provide keen i competition for all concerned One of these is the McNich- olas-Wardian Cadillac-power ed dragster from Portland which holds the top-speed record on six drag strips in the Northwest. Top speed re corded by the McNicholas team this season has baen 134 mph., about equal to the record on the local drag strip. From Reno, Nev.. may come Bob Watts who holds the strip record at Redding, Calif., at more than 140 mph. Watts in dicated last month that he was interested in attending the meet here. However there is no positive confirmation he'll come. Besides the dragster entries named above, there will be many, many outstanding cars in the other classes. A consid erable number, of competition cars are expected from Port land-Seattle area, Redding, Reno. Eureka, Crescent City and Eugene and from as far south as San Francisco. Arrav of Trophies Principal reason for the an ticipated record turnout is the outstanding array of tro phies, savings bonds and mer chandise awards that will go to the winners. Nearly $2,000 in prizes. will go to those who reach the winners circle. Much of this is being donated by local merchants and busi nessmen. Biggest prize of all is the $200 savings bond SOTA will give for breaking the strip record of 134.24 mph. Top-eleminator of the meet will get a $50 bond plus a 34 inch trophy. Twenty-four-inch trophies go to those who reg ister top time each day and all class winners and record breakers will receive 15-18-inch hardware. Time trials open at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will continue to 5 p.m. Action gets under way on Sunday at 8 a.m. Deadline for entry of stock cars will be 11 a.m. Sunday and stock car elimination will commence at 12 noon. Dead line for all entries other than stocks is 12 noon. Trophies and awards will be presented immediately upon conclusion of the top-eliminator race. Seating will be available for some 1,000 spectators and a concession stand operated by the Medford Lions club will be in operation both days. The drag strip is located seven miles north of Medford off the Crater Lake highway, in west Camp White. Signs will be posted from the "Y" in north Medford. The public is invited to the races. kjfv J?Zr Wit RUNNERUP IN SO GOLF TOURNEY-Dr. Dave Boals, left, of Medford, was runner up for the championship in the men's divi sion of the 30th annual Southern Oregon Golf tournament at Rogue Valley Country club. (Knackstedt photo) Lewiston Assumes Lead In Northwest Play-Offs Lewiston, Idaho-IUPI)-P 1 a y resumes tonight in the best-of-seven series for the 1958 Northwest league crown with the Lewiston Broncs one game up on the Yakima Bears. Lewiston called on the workhorse of its staff, Thorn ton Kipper, Tuesday night Monroe's Win Eases Yankee Hill Shortage United Press International "He did it at just the right time." Manager Casey Stengel of the New York Yankees was doing the talking about Zach Monroe, the rookie who hurled a five-hit, 6-1 victory over the .Boston tiea box Tuesday night. The triumph increased the Yankees' Amer ican league lead over the idle Chicago White Sox to 12 games." But, more important, it eased a Yankee pitching shortage created by the side lining of Whitey Ford, Don Larsen and Tom Sturdivant. It was Monroe's third win but the first time he went more than seven innings. "He didn't look so good aft er we brought him up from Denver, June 15," said Sten gel, "but he sure showed 'em last night." Farrell Charge To Bring Probe Columbus, Ohro-TOPD-Miami Manager" Kerby Farrel,. faced with an International league investigation for charging Havana "blew four straight to Columbus" denied Tuesday night he was serious. Farrell, whose team beat Co lumbus, 4-3, Tuesday night in the wake of his controversial remarks, said his comments were aimed at "jacking up my ball club." "I wasn't serious about Ha vana laying down," said Far rel, whose team is battling Columbus for a playoff spot. But President Frank Shaughnessy of the league said the fiery manager was on the spot. x- "He had . better keep his mouth shut unless he has solid proof of his charges," Shaughnessy said in . Mon treal Tuesday. "I am going to start an in vestigation on these charges immediately." Farrell made the charges Monday after a four-game sweep by Columbus over the Sugar Kings. and he came through with a six-hitter in Lewiston's 5-1 decision. , Kipper, a 23-11 hurler dur ing the regular season, fanned six and walked two. The only run off him came in the eighth when pinch-hitter Ted Tappe belted a solo homer. Wrapped Up Early Lewiston wrapped it up early with two runs in both the second and third frames and a single marker in the sixth. Don Martini's single in the recond plated both .Roger Herrscher and John McNa mara for the Broncs. In the third, one run crossed on a throwing error and Don Frailey chipped in with a run-producing single. Martini singled in the Lewiston sixth, moved up on a sacrifice and an'outfield fly and scored on a single by Ted Rhodes. Lewiston collected 10 hits off two Yakima hurlers. The first three games of the series will be played here. Lewiston took first-half hon ors in the circuit while Yak ima came back to win the second-half chase. Red Sox Hitter Lauds Williams New York-(UPD-If Pete Run nels of the Red Sox wins the American league batting crown, he says most of the credit should go to one man teammate Ted Williams. "Ted has given me more help with my hitting than any one else since I've been in baseball," Runnels declares. "If there's someone who knows more about hitting, I've never met him." No. 1 Backfield Has Dave Grosz Eugene - fCPD - Dave Grosz, sophomore from Kent, Wash., worked out with the first string backfield for the Ore gon Ducks Tuesday as Coach Len Casanova sent his team through two more rugged drills. LaSorda Claims 18th Triumph United Press International Tom LaSorda will have some strong support when the International league chooses its most valuable pitcher and most valuable player of the 1958 season. The hard-fighting southpaw checked Buffalo on six hits Tuesday night as the Mon treal Royals defeated the Bi sons, 8-3. LaSorda needed ninth-inning help from Bob Darnell but still picked up his 18th victory against only six defeats. , The decision enabled the league - leading Royals to break a three-game losing streak and retain their three length lead over runner-up Toronto. LaSorda, who also doubles as a pitching coach, is the biggest winner in the Triple-A circuit this year. Toronto won ' its fourth straight with a 3-1 victory over Rochester.. Ernie Brog lio gained his eighth victory for the Leafs while Rocky Nelson contributed his 40th homer. In other games, Miami edged Oolumbus, 4-3, behind Bob Conley while Bob Wies ler pitched Richmond to an 8-1 win over Havana.
