the second-fastest ever re
corded by a gasoline powered
car in the world. The only
man thac has traveled the
one-fourth mile faster is the
man who beat him in the race
for top-eliminator at the na
tionals.
Other Top Dragsters
Sponsored by the National
Hot Rod association, the
championship races held in
Oklahoma City were limited
to 500 of the top hot-rods in
the United States. It was of
this 500 that Cheatham came
out second best.
In addition to Cheatham,
SOTA officials stated that
several other top dragster en
tries are expected to enter
the meet and provide keen
i competition for all concerned
One of these is the McNich-
olas-Wardian Cadillac-power
ed dragster from Portland
which holds the top-speed
record on six drag strips in
the Northwest. Top speed re
corded by the McNicholas
team this season has baen 134
mph., about equal to the
record on the local drag strip.
From Reno, Nev.. may come
Bob Watts who holds the strip
record at Redding, Calif., at
more than 140 mph. Watts in
dicated last month that he
was interested in attending
the meet here. However there
is no positive confirmation
he'll come.
Besides the dragster entries
named above, there will be
many, many outstanding cars
in the other classes. A consid
erable number, of competition
cars are expected from Port
land-Seattle area, Redding,
Reno. Eureka, Crescent City
and Eugene and from as far
south as San Francisco.
Arrav of Trophies
Principal reason for the an
ticipated record turnout is
the outstanding array of tro
phies, savings bonds and mer
chandise awards that will go
to the winners. Nearly $2,000
in prizes. will go to those who
reach the winners circle.
Much of this is being donated
by local merchants and busi
nessmen.
Biggest prize of all is the
$200 savings bond SOTA will
give for breaking the strip
record of 134.24 mph.
Top-eleminator of the meet
will get a $50 bond plus a 34
inch trophy. Twenty-four-inch
trophies go to those who reg
ister top time each day and
all class winners and record
breakers will receive 15-18-inch
hardware.
Time trials open at 1 p.m.
on Saturday and will continue
to 5 p.m. Action gets under
way on Sunday at 8 a.m.
Deadline for entry of stock
cars will be 11 a.m. Sunday
and stock car elimination will
commence at 12 noon. Dead
line for all entries other than
stocks is 12 noon. Trophies
and awards will be presented
immediately upon conclusion
of the top-eliminator race.
Seating will be available
for some 1,000 spectators and
a concession stand operated
by the Medford Lions club
will be in operation both days.
The drag strip is located
seven miles north of Medford
off the Crater Lake highway,
in west Camp White. Signs
will be posted from the "Y"
in north Medford. The public
is invited to the races.

Retain Bragan
Spokane -JUPD- The Spokane
Indians have signed Bobby
Bragan as manager of the
1959 team, General Manager
Spencer Harris announced
Tuesday.
Bragan took over the helm
of the Pacific Coast league
baseball entry July 1 after he
was fired as manager of the
Cleveland Indians. Since then,
Spokane has been winning
about half of its games al
though the team still is deep
in the second division.
Harris said there was "only
one stipulation" in the con
tract. He said he would not
attempt to prevent Bragan
from accepting a major league
contract if one is offered.
