If I ever find blood m my urine, I will go im mediately to an able urolo gist and have him look into my bladder, and perhaps maae x-ray studies of my kidneys to see where the blood is coming from. As Dr Charles C. Higgins of Cleve land nas written, even we doctors will Sometimes make the mistake of giving medi cine and temporizing until it is too late to cure the patient with an operation. Dr. Kretchmer years ago reviewed 933 cases of urin ary bleeding and found tha in that day the average time between the appearance of the blood and the securing of a diagnosis was 2.39 years. More recently, Dr. Higgins reviewed 1600 cases of "hem aturia" (blood in the urine) and found the period of pro crastination to be 2.59 years! In 76.5 per cent of the cases the cause of the bleeding was a tumor of the bladder. Usual ly the tumor was cancerous. In a series of 2240 cases of "gross hematuria," in which the urine looked like catsup, there was something decided ly wrong in 96 per cent. In 40 per cent, the disease was cancerous in nature. In some of the cases the disease was in a kidney. In children the cause may be an acute in flammation of the kidneys. In elderly men with difficulty in urinating the blood may be coming from the prostate gland. If an aging man with blood in his urine will only go quickly to a good urolo gist, and if then the doctor finds in the bladder a cauliflower-like cancerous growth, he may be able to destroy i' completely with hot sparks coming off the end of a wire that he passes down through an operating cystoscope (an electrically lighted tube pass ed down into the bladder). Even the average practi tioner of medicine has not heard a word of what -went on when perhaps the dread yellow fever began to appear again in some of the countries tq the south of us, and had to be quickly fought. Laymen do not know that 150 years aeo each summer yellow fev er killed thousands of peo- DeoDle in our southern sea ports and even in Philadel phia. I recently read about the horrible disease, yaws, which until 1950 covered with aw ful sores the bodies of a third of the rural population of Haiti. It is due .to a tiny SDirochete. so much like that of syphilis that some experts in the past have felt, sure that yaws must be a variant of syphilis. Others maintained that it must be a differen disease because, it attacks children as well as adults: the big ulcerations are different from those of syphilis, and tne disease is not primarily a sexual one. In 1949. the Haitian Gov ernment asked for mterna- ional help to save the health and lives of one million of their people. Fortunately, now, one injection of peni cillin is enough either to cure the disease or to render it non-contagious. Accordingly, health officers went to Haiti and taught crews of local men to eo from house to house to treat the sick. By the end of 1953. 2,623,141 people had been cured, and in most districts the disease had been eradicated. I might never have known of tnis miracle of healing if I had not happened to see a short note about it in the journal, Science. Aren't we humans funny? If a general in war had killed 2,623,141 people we would have a statue of him in every park in the land.
