Backstairs: Water Supply Concern BY DAYTON MOORE i United Piess International Washington (UPD Back stairs at the White House: President Eisenhower long has been . concerned with the nation's water supply. Since taking office, he frequently has referred to the importance of water to the nation and the need of taking steps to assure an adequate supply in the fu ture. In an informal talk early in his first administration, he said: "I have become con vinced that before very long, America will - almost unani mously look upon water as its single greatest resource." ,( It was during his first year in office that the government's program on desalting sea wa ter and brackish water got underway. The importance he attaches to this program is shown by the fact that it is one of the few nondefense projects for which he request ed an increase in funds from Congress this year. It was the progress achieved in this program that led him to include in his speech be fore the special session of the United Nations General As sembly on the Middle East the statement that "new hori zons are opening in the de salting of water." Some sci entists have indicated they be lieve the President was over optimistic when he added: "The ancient problem of wa ter is on the threshold o the solution." The public's great interest in the water problem is dem onstrated by about 6,000 sug gestions volunteered to the government by persons from all walks of life. . Eisenhower starts his week ly meetings with congression al Republican leaders at an early hour for official Wash ington 8:30 a.m. But two par ticipants frequently have showed up 30 minutes or an hour early. Everett M Dirkson (R-Ill.), an early riser, has used the Cabinet Room for some paper work he carries in a bulging briefcase. . Whittaker would be paged to consider any Lit tle Rock School Board legal move through the Supreme Court to bar seven Negro stu dents from going back to Cen tral High school next month. But sources, indicate that chances were remote the high court would intervene at this stage in the battle. The school board has rush ed an appeal for a stay of judgment to the Eighth Cir cuit Court of Appeals which reversed a federal court order postponing integration until 1961. A similar petition for a stay and a review of the ruling is planned ! for the Supreme Court, according to a school board attorney.
