Salem Nabs State Title In Softball Coos Bay UPI Salem de feated Corvallis 6-1 Tuesday night to win the state men's Softball, title. Corvallis had defeated Sa lem 1-0 in an earlier game to - set up the championship con test. In the finale, Salem broke the game wide open with six runs in the fourth inning, knocking Lloyd Buettgenbach from the mound. Buettgen bach had pitched the earlier Corvallis win over Salem, al lowing only one hit. Don Carey eot Corvailis' only hit in the final game. Paul Waner Has Attack Omaha, Neb. (UPD Former Pittsburgh Pirate hitting star Paul (Big Poison) Waner, re cently recovered from bouts with pneumonia and tubercu losis, today fought for his life following a heart attack. Waner, a member of base ball's Hall of Fame was strick en here Tuesday. Doctors said his condition was "satisfactory." The ex-Pirate great is one of eight living 3,000 hitters, having collected 3,152 safeties in his 20-year baseball career. He was known as "Big Poison" to the opposition be cause of his big bat, and his brother, Lloyd, also a Pitts burgh outfielder, was dubbed "Little Poison." Warier currently is a bat ting instructor for the St Louis Cardinals. ' Big Four Loop Talked oan Francisco (UPD Rep resentatives of four big col leges on the Pacific Coast will meet here Saturday to form a Big Four association to replace the Pacific Coast Conference, it was reported today. The Big Four will include California, U n i v e rsity of Southern California, Univer sity of California at Los An geles and Washington. It may later be expanded to include Stanford. Greg Englehard, athletic director at California, refused to confirm or deny the re ports of the meeting. How ever, he said there would be a "newsworthy" press confer ence Saturday morning. Oregon Champs Face Centralia Billings, Mont. (UPD Bend, the Oregon Junior Legion baseball champion, opens play in the regional tournament here Friday afternoon against Centralia, the Washington stale champ. Fairbanks meets Lewiston, Idaho, in another first round game. Orlando Cepeda Escapes Injury San Francisco (UPD Or lando Cepeda, 21, star rookie first baseman for the San Francisco Giants, escaped in jury Tuesday night when his car collided with a taxicab. The accident occurred two hours after Cepeda scored the winning run for the Giants against the Cincinnati Redlegs at Seals Stadium. Neither Cepeda nor Henry L. Eugene Tryouts Set By Giants Eugene San Francisco Giants will hold baseball try outs and conduct a clinic at Bethel park here from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Aug. 29 and 30. The tryouts are open to boys 17 through 22 years of age. Youths are to provide their own gloves and shoes and should appear in baseball uniforms jf possible. Moose lodge and River Road Park and Recreation district are sponsors of the tryout camp. Further information may be obtained from Jim Dickinson director of RRPRD. SPORTS FRANCHISE PROPOSED Washington (UPD Ten sen ators, headed by Hubert H. Humphrey (D-Minn.), today suggested a franchise should be granted to the Minneapolis St. Paul area if the American league expands to 10 teams. In a letter written by Humphrey to Will Harridge, president of the American league, the sen ator pointed out "the Twin Cities have a vast trade terri tory, populated by avid sports fans and with a particular in terest in baseball . . . where excellent stadium facilities are already available and are about to be expanded." Offense 'Duty Scheduled for James, Baker Portland (UPD Dick James, a defensive specialist, and Sam Baker, the place kicking specialist, will play offense for the Washington Redskins against the San Francisco 49'ers here Saturday night, Coach Joe Kuharich said to day. Both James and Baker were standouts in offensive back field play while at Oregon and Oregon State respectively. The starting Washington backfield also will include Bert Zagers and either Ralph Guglielmi or Eddie LaBaron at quarterback. The 49'ers arrive in town Friday afternoon. Mexico Team In Semi-Finals Williamsport, Pa. (UPD Defending champion Monter rey, Mexico, seeking to re peat its rags-to-riches title tri umph of last year, met Dar ien, Conn., today in the semi finals of the 12th annual Lit tle League World Series. v Kankakee, 111., played Gad- den, Ala., in the other game. Monterrey, with only one regular remaining from the band of little lads with big hearts who won the 1957 championship, followed tradi tion by trouncing Pearl Har bor, 11-0 Tuesday in the open ing round. Kankakee gained the semi finals with a 2-1 triumph dver Portland, Ore., in a game which saw homers account for all the scoring. Gadsden drew a bye in opening play. Port land was eliminted. Royals Increase IL Leadership United Press International The Montreal Royals in creased their first-place bulge in the International league to 31-2 games Tuesday night by edging the ' Rochester Red Wings, 5-4, in 11 innings. Second place Tironto could do little against the four-hit hurling of Walt Coleman as Buffalo took a 7-1 decision. Coleman won . his seventh game as the Bison backed him with a 16-hit attack. Columbus moved to within a game of fourth-place Miami by beating the Marlins, 6-2. Richmond scored two runs in the 10th inning at Havana to beat the Cubans, 7-6.
