Sounds fantastic, because the Yankees still have a 10Vz game lead over the Chicago White Sox with just 35 games to go. But it's just an outside possibility today because the White Sox are on a winning streak that now has reached six games and the Yankees are on a four -game losing streak. Dick Donovan's four-hit pitching kept the Sox surg ing Tuesday night with a 7-1 victory over Boston. At New York, homers by Rocky Cola- vito and Vic Wertz helped the Cleveland Indians hand the Yankees their ninth loss in the the last 12 games, 8-6. Happened Before The greatest flopperoo of modern times was staged, of course, by the Brooklyn Dodgers of 1951. They blew a 13l-game lead in the last 44 games of the season in a tailspin that started on Aug. 11 and then lost to the New York Giants in a three-game pennant playoff on Bobby Thomson's historic homer. New York had a 6-3 lead until Colavito blasted a three run homer for the Indians in the fifth inning, his 28th, to tie the score. San Diego combed three Salt Lake pitchers for 14 hits including two-run homers by Dave Rope and Gene Lary, while handing the Bees their third straight setback. Lary throttled the visitors on eight safeties to pick up his eighth triumph. Bamberger Drops One At Sacramento, the Solons handed Mountie starter George Bamberger his ninth loss against 14 victories with a three-run splurge in the fourth inning. The Solons' Marshall Bridges, who need ed help from Bob Ross in the seventh, got the win, his 13th of the season. Bridges struck out four to run his league leading total to 176. The Sacs put together three hits, a walk and sacri fice in the three run fourth frame. Seattle touched three Port land pitchers for 12 hits, but the Beavers made it close by bunching their seven safeties in three innings. Rainier startr er Chuck Churn, who gave way to Jim Davis in the ninth, was credited with his seventh win. The Beaver's Al Lary was charged with the seventh defeat against eight wins. Len Neal and Bob Di- Pietro homered for the losers, a two-run homer in the seventh. At Boston, Donovan missed a shutout only when Jackie Jensen hit his 33rd homer for the Red Sox in the fifth in ning. It was Donovan's sev enth win in the last eight starts and his 11th complete game of the year. Braves Lose Two In other AL games, the Kansas City A's swept a twi night twin bill from Balti more, 4-1 and 6-4, and Wash ington handed Detroit its fifth straight loss, 3-1. In the Na tional league, San Francisco nipped Cincinnati in 10 in nings, 4-3; Pittsburgh downed the Chicago Cubs, 4-3; St. Louis edged the Philadelphia Phils, 5-4; and the Los An geles Dodgers swept a twi night twin bill from Milwau kee, 4-1 and 7-2, to end the Braves' seven-game winning streak. Ned Garver won the open ing game for the Orioles, his 11th victory, with a five-hitter in which he allowed only one earned run. The A's slammed out 15 hits to take the night cap. Roy Sievers paced the .Sen ators with a 4-for-4, driving in two of Washington's three runs with his 34th homer and a single. , Win In Last Frame The Giants gained their 19th last inning victory of the season when Orlando Cepeda reached first base as Johnny Temple dropped his pop fly in a collision, and then came all the way in on Willie Kirk land's triple. Two-run homers by Bill Mazeroski and Dick Stuart gave the Pirates their victory over Chicago, with Stuart's sixth-inning wallop off Tay lor Phillips being the win ner. Hobie Landrith's eighth-in ning homer broke a 4-4 tie to give the Cards their win over the Phils. Stan Musial and Gene Frtese also hom ered for the Cards and Wally Post and Solly Hemus for the Phils. Don Drysdale pitched a five-hitter for the Dodgers' opening game win ' and also hit his fifth homer of the sea son. Charley Neal's short homer over the leftfield screen in the second inning was the deciding blow John ny Podres allowed the Braves only four hits in the night cap. Four classifications of com petition will be run according to age groups. The midget divisions will be open to all registered swimmers 10 years and under. 'Junior field swim mers will include 11 and 12 year-olds and the intermedi ate division takes in the 13 and 14 year-olds. Swimmers 15 and 16. will compete in the senior division.
