r T Valley Youth in Plane Forced Down on Bar Russell Grove, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Edmonds, 3380 North Pacific highway, was one of five persons stranded for four days on a sandbar in the Galena river in Alaska earlier this month ac cording to reports received here recently. He was a passenger in a plane which landed on the bar Friday, Aug. 1, after it ran short of gas in foggy weather. It wasn't until Mon day that an Air Force plane spotted the party, which in cluded Grove, three other pas sengers and the pilot. HOWARD Dies in Hospital Dr. W.W.Howard Founder of Local Hospital, Dies Dr. Warner Whitham How ard, 77, of . 1507 West Main st., a resident of Medford for the past 46 years, died Friday evening in the Medford Os teopathic hospital,, which he had founded in 1933. In 1912 he graduated from the Kirks ville College of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Mo., and in that same year located in Medford. During his career here he has held all of the offices of the Oregon State Osteopathic association and was active in the national association. He was honored with the degree of Doctor of Science of Oste opathy and was made trustee emeritus of the Kirksville' College of Osteopathy. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church and a 50 year member of the BPOE and the AF & AM, and the Sons 'of the American Revo lution On June 18, 1919, he was married in Los Angeles to Sadie E. Mulkey, who sur vives. Other survivors are two nieces, Mrs. Blythe Bald win, Jefferson, Iowa, and Mrs. Serena Hollingshead, Montclair, N.J. VISITING PARENTS James Peterson, aviation electronics technician airman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Daun, 2413 Kings highway, Medford. is visiting his par ents in the valley. Peterson, who is serving with the U.S. Navy, was grad uated July 15 from the avia tion electronics technician school at Memphis, Tenn. He is scheduled to report to San Francisco for assignment Aug. 27. VISITING PARENTS Don Langston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Langston, 256 Beatty st., Medford, is visit ing his parents following his graduation from indoctrina tion training at the U.S. Naval training center, San Diego. Currently serving aboard the USS Burton Island is Lang ston's brother, Charles Lang ston, storekeeper second class. Obifuary LYDIA A. BRIGGS Funeral services for Mrs. Lydia A. Briggs, of Galice, who died last Wednesday, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Chapel Mortuary. The Rev. Richard M. Jones, pastor of the Eastwood Baptist church will officiate. Interment will be in Siskiyou Memorial park. Casket bearers will, be James Hopkins, Claude Mey ers, Arthur Flowers, E. A. Mallory, Ernest Reddington and Dobe Grebb. Mrs. Briggs, the daughter of John and Christine Jakober Albrecht, was born in Pol lock, S. D., on Dec. 24, 1906. She was married on Nov. 14, 1931, at Mound City, S.D., to Frank L. Briggs, who survives-. The couple came from Idaho to Oregon in 1936 where they lived near Baker until coming to Shady Cove about four years ago and more recently. moved to Galice. Mrs. Briggs was a member of the First Baptist church of Hager man Valley, Idaho. Besides her husband, she is survived by six brothers, Jacob Albrecht,. Boise, Idaho, Arthur Albrecht, Portland, Benjamin Albrecht, Bismarkj N.D., Walter Albrecht, in Ari zona, Robert Albrecht, Reno, Nev., and Emil Albrecht, Baker, Ore.; five sisters, Mrs. Martha Bower, Boise, Mrs., Mary Albrecht, Reedsport, Mrs. Ann Vermillion, Port land, Mrs. Frank Hendricks, Reedsport, and Mrs. Esther Briggs, Wapato, Wash.; one half-brother, John Albrecht, in Washington, and one half sister, Mrs. Christina Schultz, in Canada. She is one of three civilians in the state of Oregon who have been selected as officers in the WAC on the basis of leadership ability. Administering the oath is Oregon WAC recruiting officer Captain Lillian Baker, Portland. Miss Sorg has been employed in the Jackson county juvenile department since Sept. 1, 1957, after graduating in criminology from Fresno State college. This method of selecting officer material has been in use by the WAC for about five years, but this is the first time anyone from Jackson county has qualified for a direct commission, Captain Baker said. An outdoor luncheon was served by the host and hostess Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Davies. Major Ed Starr and his fam ily have returned to the States after serving three years over seas. They will now be sta tioned in St. Louis, Mo. Mrs. Rupert Maddox and daughters, Diana and Zita. of Sterling Creek rd. returned this week from a week's vaca tion trip to San Francisco. While there they visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Maddox. Highlights of their trip were a trip to China town, attending an Ice Follies and a shopping tour for school clothes. Accompanying them home, after completing six months' training at Ft. Ord, was Mrs. Maddox's son, Dace. Mrs. J. B. Jacksonville Assembly of God church held a Sunday school picnic at Hawthorne park last Sunday. The event was a potluck affair featuring homemade ice cream. About 50 members attended. The children spent the afternoon swimming. Mrs. Ona Paul of Medford was guest of honor recently at the home of Mrs. Ray Cole man in celebration of her birthday. In more than 60 per cent of thr remaining fatal accidents, speed was a contributing fac tor to death, the Department said. In at least 21 fatals. drinking was known to be i involved. Pets Can Transmit TB, Scientists Warn Stockholm, Sweden (UPD An international scientists' committee warned Friday night that' pets are a growing tuberculosis hazard to human beings. The committee partic ularly singled out dogs, cats, parrots and monkeys as poten tial sources of the disease. The group, made up of ex perts of United Nations food and health agencies, is hold ing a five-day meeting to dis cuss animal diseases that can be transmitted to humans. and Philip' Winningham. Ernest Rasmussen reports that his son, David, injured i in an accident in Bakersfield recently, has been moved to the home of his sister at 121 Wilson st., Oildale, Calif. Mrs. Alice Hibbert of 107 South Third st. has opened a business at her home known as the Attic Shop. She will carry new and used articles such as books, dishes, clothing, kitchen gadgets and household items. The shop will be open from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. every day except Mondays. Mrs. Hibbert spent lastj weekend in Klamath Falls at-1 tending a birthday party and family gathering honoring her son, Alden Hibbert.
