Forced Down on Bar
Russell Grove, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Clarence Edmonds,
3380 North Pacific highway,
was one of five persons
stranded for four days on a
sandbar in the Galena river in
Alaska earlier this month ac
cording to reports received
here recently.
He was a passenger in a
plane which landed on the
bar Friday, Aug. 1, after it
ran short of gas in foggy
weather. It wasn't until Mon
day that an Air Force plane
spotted the party, which in
cluded Grove, three other pas
sengers and the pilot.

During his career here he
has held all of the offices of
the Oregon State Osteopathic
association and was active in
the national association. He
was honored with the degree
of Doctor of Science of Oste
opathy and was made trustee
emeritus of the Kirksville'
College of Osteopathy. He
was a member of the First
Presbyterian church and a 50
year member of the BPOE
and the AF & AM, and the
Sons 'of the American Revo
lution On June 18, 1919, he was
married in Los Angeles to
Sadie E. Mulkey, who sur
vives. Other survivors are
two nieces, Mrs. Blythe Bald
win, Jefferson, Iowa, and
Mrs. Serena Hollingshead,
Montclair, N.J.

Lydia A. Briggs, of Galice,
who died last Wednesday, will
be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in
Chapel Mortuary. The Rev.

will officiate. Interment will
be in Siskiyou Memorial park.

Mrs. Briggs, the daughter
of John and Christine Jakober
Albrecht, was born in Pol

She was married on Nov. 14,
1931, at Mound City, S.D., to
Frank L. Briggs, who survives-.
The couple came from
Idaho to Oregon in 1936
where they lived near Baker
until coming to Shady Cove
about four years ago and more
recently. moved to Galice. Mrs.
Briggs was a member of the
First Baptist church of Hager
man Valley, Idaho.
Besides her husband, she
is survived by six brothers,
Jacob Albrecht,. Boise, Idaho,
Arthur Albrecht, Portland,
Benjamin Albrecht, Bismarkj
N.D., Walter Albrecht, in Ari

RECEIVES COMMISSION Joan Sorg, Medford, (left) is

Medford recruiting office after qualifying recently for a
direct commission in the Women's Army Corps. She is one
of three civilians in the state of Oregon who have been
selected as officers in the WAC on the basis of leadership
ability. Administering the oath is Oregon WAC recruiting
officer Captain Lillian Baker, Portland. Miss Sorg has been
employed in the Jackson county juvenile department since
Sept. 1, 1957, after graduating in criminology from Fresno
State college. This method of selecting officer material has
been in use by the WAC for about five years, but this is the
first time anyone from Jackson county has qualified for a
direct commission, Captain Baker said.

Speed Takes Its Cut:
One Third of Fatalities
Salem (UPD Speed was di
rectly responsible for at least
33 per cent of the fatal acci
dents and deaths during the
first six months of 1958, the
Motor Vehicle Department
announced yesterday. -
It apparently caused 49- of
147 fatal accidents and 59 of
178 deaths during the period.
In more than 60 per cent of
thr remaining fatal accidents,
speed was a contributing fac
tor to death, the Department
said. In at least 21 fatals.
