Meyner of New Jersey will deliver the keynote ad dress here Monday at the con vention of the National Asso ciation of County Officials, opening today. The host group, the Oregon Association of Counties, said about 1500 delegates were ex pected from all parts of the nation. Leo A. Hoegh, admin istrator of the Office of Civil ian Mobilization and Defense will address the convention Tuesday. Explorer Believed Slain by Auca Indians Quito, Ecuador (UPD A Ca nadian explorer missing in the wilds of Ecuador is believed to have been slain by the same savage Indians who slaughtered five American missionaries in 1956, it was reported yesterday. Robert Tremblay, who came to Ecuador to study the Auca Indians, had "set up camp in the approximate area where the Aucas massacred the missionaries. A pilot who flew over the region said the camp had been destroyed. IN SPITE OF MOTTO New York flJPD A tunnel is being built between Man- hattan's General Post Office and a nearby annex so em ployes can get from one place to another in bad weather. On the front of the post office building is an inscrip tion proclaiming that "neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloo mof night" can stop a mailman. WEAKFISH ISN'T Albany, N. Y. (UPD The weakfish isn't as anemic as Its name indicates. The New York State Con servation Department says the weakfish "hits like a ton of bricks when he's hooked and squirms and twists with light ning speed." The weakfish derived its name from the Dutch. It means a "soft fish," to dis tinguish it from the usual flaky kind. Englishman Prefers Homemade Product London (UPD An English motorist in Moscow awaited a new windsheild for his car Saturday after asking for and getting possibly the longest distance road service ever supplied by the British Auto mobile association. The motorist telephoned the BAA here Friday, said his windshield was broken and he could not find a satisfactory replacement in Moscow. An hour later BAA air-freighted a new glass, specially packed and ready for installation. It was expected to reach Mos cow within 43 hours. State Allocates Anti-Pollution Funds Portland (UPD The State Sanitary Authority Friday al located $518,592 of its Federal anti-pollution funds for sup port of a sewage disposal system in the tri-county metropolitan district around Portland. In addition,' the authority granted a total of $157,773 for sanitary project construction at Cornelius and in the South Suburban sanitary district of Klamath Falls. Cornelius would receive 552,776 and South Suburban would get $94,997. Requests for funds from Eugene, Hood River, Ontario, Lakeview, Ashland- and .the state Board, of Control were denied the authority. Total requests for funds amounted to about $1,800,000. ROMANION STAMP SHOW Bucharest UPI Foreign collectors have been invited to an international postage stamp exhibition to be held in this Romanian capital Nov. 15 to 20. A highlight of the show will be the replica of a mail coach that existed 100 years ago, when Romanian is sued its first stamps. Flying Objects Have Them Saucer-Eyed Almagordo, N.M. (UPD A group of unidentified fly ing objects "clustered like a star" hovered for more than an hour near here Friday night and then suddenly "broke apart and disappear ed," witnesses said yesterday A spokesman for the Aerial Research Phenomena organ ization "filter" center here said a total of nine persons had reported seeing .the mys terious objects. A check of nearby military bases, airports, and the U.S Weather bureau disclosed there were no jets or weather balloons aloft at or near the time of the sightings, between 10 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Fil ter Center Director L. J, Lorenzen said. An employee of the Alma gordo school system, Izaac Car, told the filter center, "I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself." An electronics engineer. Henry Paz, 21, said the ob jects "seemed to be travelling at super-human speeds, and making maneuvers no air craft could withstand." "They were phantomlike going through elusive mane uvers like quicksilver," he said. "I can understand why anyone seeing such a thing would hesitate to report it Albacore Tuna Caugh 50 Miles Off Coast Westport, Wash. (UPD Reports from commercial fish ing boats off the Washington coast indicate that Albacore tuna are being caught about 50 or 60 miles off the coast as far north as Destruction Island. Boats were reporting catch ing as many as 200 fish per day. (UPD As part of a study of grouse habits, biologists here set up a camouflaged trap with a mirror in it on the drum ming logs where the birds came to find their mates in the spring. When the grouse arrived, he saw his own image. Believing it to be a "rival,"( the bird would rush at him to drive him off. Instead, he was caught in the trap, , banded and released to resume his courtship.
