ILLINOIS VALLEY To Attend Workshop By RUTH RAUSCH Cave Junction Jackie Williams, Illinois.Valley High school student body president, will attend the Oregon State Student Council summer workshop held on the Univer sity of Oregon campus in Eu gene next week. The work shop is attended by student body officers of all Oregon high schools. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Podoll are hosting Mrs. Barbara Lee of Death Valley, Calif., and Mrs. Clarence Mason of Ofancha, Calif., for the month of Au gust. Mrs. Mary Dymoke, mother of Ted Milligan, is here for a few weeks from her home in New Plymouth, Idaho. At the Jack Spitz home for the week end were Mr. and Mrs. Harper Mann and grand daughter of Glendale, Calif., ' and Mr. and Mrs. Allan Mann cf Ukiah, Calif. A daughter, Cynthia Kay, was born to Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Jones at Orange,- Calif., July 26. The mother is the former Wilma , Downing of O Brien. Grandmother, Mrs. Charles Downing, is with the new ar rival and expects to return with Wilma and the new baby the later, part of August. Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Goodwin in Eureka, Calif., August 3 was a six pound, four ounce son. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs, Jens Hansen and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Goodwin. . Darlene Wheeler, daughter of Mr. and - Mrs. Wilmer Wheeler, of Selma has enter ed the Jubilee Qfaeen contest under the sponsorship of the Deer Creek Grange. Word has been received of the engagement of Christine Duncan to Raymond L. Sparks, both of San Diego, Calif. Miss Duncan is the daughter of Mrs. Elenora Whitehead now of Yuma, Ariz., and George Duncan of Kerby. Miss Duncan is a graduate of Illinois Valley High school, class of 1954. A family reunion dinner was held at the Oregon Caves chatteau after the arrival of Mrs. LaVina Binley, another daughter of Mrs. Arnold also from Pasadena. Sayings and Loan Association Charier Portland (LTD The first savings and loan association to be founded in nearly a quarter of a century has re ceived its charter from the Oregon corporation commis sioner. The Oregon Pioneer Sav ings and Loan association is capitalized at $200,000. Nine teen persons signed the arti cles of incorporation. Ward H. Cook, organizer of the financial firm, said the as sociation will open for busi ness at S.W. 4th ave. and Stark st. as soon as final ap proval is obtained from the Federal Home Loan bank and the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance corporation. A reserve - fund capital-stock-type of organization, the new firm is one of only three of its kind in the state, Cook said. Approximately 100 per sons are stockholders. Thornton Answers Petition By Langley Salem (UPD Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton has forwarded to the clerk of the United States Supreme court a brief in opposition to William M. Langley's petition to the high tribunal. Langley, former Multnomah county district attorney, was convicted May 9, 1957, of fail ure . to prosecute gambling law violators and was relieved of his office. He appealed to the Oregon Supreme court, but that court affirmed the decision of the Multnomah County Circuit court last April. Now Langley has petition ed the United States Supreme court to review his case. Avon, Conn. UPD One day after he lost out for the Republic an gubernatorial nomination in Connecticut, John Alsop's bam burned down. LaJ Teamsters Agent Arrested in Arson Case in Flint Flint, Mich. (UPD Team sters Union Business Agent Jack Thompson of Flint Local 332, described as the "closest friend" of human torch Frank Kierdorf, was arrested Satur day on suspicion of arson in the blaze which cost Kierdorf his life. Thompson was the first person arrested in connection with the fire last Sunday night at Latreilles cleaners. State Attorney General Paul Adams -has pulled to gether conclusive evidence that Kierdorf, 56, an ex-convict and also a Local 332 busi ness agent, was fatally burned while setting an explosive fire at the dry cleaning estab lishment. A secret witness said he saw two men running from the burning building and heard the anguished screams of a third man inside. Missing Uncle Adams said Kierdorf's miss ing uncle, Herman Kierdorf, 67, a former teamsters busi ness agent, is a definite sus pect in the arson job. Thompson was arrested on suspicion of having been the third man at the scene of the blaze. Kierdorf, who staggered into St. Joseph Mercy hospi tal at Pontiac about 1 a.m. Monday and told police later in the day he was turned into a human torch by two "stran gers," died Thursday. His funeral was held yesterday afternoon. Adams said Thompson will be permitted to attend the fu neral but will be under heavy police guard. Police have questioned many top teamsters officials and Kierdorf friends in con nection with the arson and the disappearance of Herman Kierdorf late Monday. Sputnik Rocket Will Be Visible Until Wednesday The rocket of Sputnik III, which has been visible in southern Oregon the past few nights, will be visible at least through Wednesday night, ac cording to the Oregon Moon watch team in Portland. Several valley residents saw the rocket carrier plainly about 11:03 o'clock Friday night. It appeared first at the bottom left corner of the big dipper and progressed almost straight overhead. After pass ing into the milky way, it ap parently went into the earth's Travel Editors Visit in County Four travel editors, travel ing under the sponsorship of the Pacific Northwest Travel association, visited in Jackson county Friday and Saturday. They were Harding Christ, managing editor of the Cleve land Press, and travel editors Frank Freeman of the San Jose M e r c U r y, Charlotte Brunk of the Des Moines Reg ister, and Don Howard of the Salt Lake City Tribune. They visited the Jackson ville museum Saturday morn ing, and saw "Much Ado About Nothing" at the Ash land Shakespearean Festival in Ashland Saturday night. They left for Grants 'Pass early this morning. Nine women in various districts of Mexico City have complained recently about rear-guard attacks. In each case, the assailant wielded the icepick and then took to his heels. Police say ihe complain ing witnesses are of various ages and stations in life, but they are all "well-endowed physically." One Killed; Five Injured in Vreck Beaverton, Ore. (UPD Two cars collided just east of here Friday night and one person was killed and five others in jured as the highway was splashed with flaming gaso line. August J. Strassel, 41, of Portland, died a few hours later in a Portland hospital from first, second and third degree burns. His daughter, Linda Stras sel, 9, was listed in "poor" condition with first, second and third-degree burns. Dona Jean De Freitas, 21, Portland, is in critical condi tion, also with burns, Kenneth Kyllo, 41, also of Portland, is in fair condition with burns and a possible head injury. All four persons were in the Strassel station wagon when it. collided with a car driven by Leo Vernon Brown of Gaston, Ore. Washington county sheriff's deputies said both cars were going east on the highway near St. Marys school for girls when the col lision occurred. The Strassel car rolled on its side in the middle of the highway and burned. All occupants were thrown clear of the car, but were splashed with burning gasoline. The Brown car careened off the highway and plunged on to a railroad track along the south side of the highway. Brown and his only passenger, Gerald E. Mick, 18, were list ed in good condition in a hos pital. shadow and was not visible after that. The rocket reflects sunlight intermittently, and during the' bright stage it has the intens ity of a bright star. It is in visible x between the bright stages as it tumbles end over end. Scan Sky Early The Moonwatclr team sug gested that people wishing to see the rocket scan the sky about 10 to 15 minutes prior to the time. It is scheduled to be visible about '9:10 p.m. to day 26 degrees altitude in the northeast sky, and again at 10:52 p.m. at 63 degrees alti tude in the southwest sky. Other scheduled times: Monday: 9 p.m., 28 degrees altitude in northeast sky; 10:42 p.m., 60 degrees altitude in southwest sky. Tuesday: 8:50 p.m., 33 de grees altitude in northeast sky; 10:32 p.m., 56 degrees altitude in southwest sky. Wednesday: 8:39 p.m., 36 degrees altitude in northeast sky; 10:21 pjn., 53 degrees altitude in southwest sky. BREACH OF FAITH Washington (UPD Sen. Thruston B. Morton (R-Ky.) told the Senate Friday failure to act on Hawaiian statehood this year was "tantamount to a breach of faith" on the part of the Democratic congres sional leadership. PRIC m PER o lfl Authorities Seek Human Skeletons In High Sierras Visalia, Calif !UPD Feder al, state and county authori ties departed for the High Sierra Saturday to dig for human skeletons on the prop erty of the self-styled "King of Nine-Mile Canyon." The mountain monarch, Emery La Vern Bales, 53, was in custody here on sex charges involving his two daughters, aged 16 and 18, and his stepdaughter, 21. Sheriff Sandy Robinson of Tulare county said the two daughters were taken into protective custody July 26, when they hiked out of the hills to report Bales to au thorities. Mining Prospector Bales, a sometimes mining prospector, has built himself a private kingdom, including a store, school house, Spanish type home and several bun galows. The girls said Bales' "often threatened our lives and on occasion dug up the skeleton to warn us that the same thing could happen to us." They said Bales boasted of having two other skeletons hidden in a mine shaft. Sheriff Robinson said dep uty John McNally, reported he found several bones and. scraps of cloth during a search of the Bales property and was shown a photograph of a complete skeleton which the family said was buried in a location known only to Bales. ' Because of the unusual as pects of the case, the recently married stepdaughter was brought to Visalia from Den ver, Colo., for questioning. Robinson said she supported statements taken from the other girls. Bales is to be arraigned in Porterville justice court Mon day on the sex accusations. His wife and their two sons, aged 14 and 17, still are at the family's canyon home. They will visit 21 nations in South America, Europe, the Near East, Canada, Mexico and Cuba. State Supreme Court Finds Docket Loaded Salem (CPU In an effort to relieve the accumulation of cases on the docket of the Supreme Court, justices re mained in session until Fri day. During July and through the first week of August the court announced decisions in 25 cases. Justices said today they do not anticipate that any more cases will be argued until the fall term begins immediately after Labor Day. However, most justices will remain in Salem and work on business already submitted. On Sept. 3 the court will re sume hearing cases. Although since July 1st 36 new cases were filed, the lar gest number for a comparable period in many years, the court disposed of 33 of them through written opinions, dis missals and consolidations. Six petitions for rehearing and one petition for a writ of mandamus and 20 miscellan eous motions and petitions were also disposed of. Columbia Flow 78 Per Cent Average Portland UPI The U. S. Geological Survey, here an nounced Friday that, the monthly mean flow of the Columbia river at The Dalles was 78 per cent of average for July in the 15-year period 1938-52. The announcement came after adjustments had been made for storage changes in eight major power reservoirs of the Columbia river system and for pumpage at Grand Coulee. Hollis M. Orem, engineer in charge said the monthly- mean streamflows in July were below average over most of the Pacific Northwest. They They were low in - the Flat head river basin in Montana, in the Priest, upper Clear water and Sanke rivers above Heise in Idaho, 'n most of the streams on both sides of the Cascades in Washington, and in the Umatilla river in Oregon. Runoff was high in only Oregon s Deschutes river. SORE THUMB New York (UPD Luis Os- waldo Lavin-Gardin escaped twice within a week from im migration authorities who were trying to deport him to Cuba. The first time, he was captured; the second time, he surrendered, having decided it was useless for him to try living as a fugitive, since he must travel in a wheelchair. W . . It . was brought under control about 9 p.m. Two planes from the Mon tague airport, one of them a 'Pigeon Drop' Nets 72-Year-Woman Portland UPI) A 72-year-' old woman Friday was" the ! victim of an age-old confi dence game here called the "pigeon drop" and it cost her S6000. Mrs. Ethel Victoria Sails recounted to police how a strange woman approached her in a downtown depart ment store and told of another friend who had found a wal let with a great deal of money in it.. The friend soon ap peared. The two women offered lo share their find with Mrs. Sails if she could prove her self responsible. Anxious to share in the other women's good fortune, Mrs. Sails went with them to her bank where she drew out S6000 of her life's savings to prove her re sponsibility. She turned the money over to the strangers in good faith and they promised to return shortly with Mrs. Sails' money plus her share of the money they said they found. They have not returned. The average depth of the Pacific ocean is 14,548 feet, compared with 12,880 feet for the Atlantic.
