By EUGENE BURNS Ranger-Naturalist Baghdad, There are sev eral varieties of sand grouse They seem to be a fairly com mon bird in the Near and Middle East. All . that I have seen are good looking, but those we saw coming in from the nearby desert are the most striking so far. As one might expect from nature's protective coloration, they have a generally sandy tone to their feathers, as one looks at them quickly. But B-l-ra closer inspection and we wer within 10 feet of some of these revealed a soft pink lilac coloring of the plumage on head and breast, while that of the lower half of face and throat was a vivid orangeish yellow. The two main tail feathers were elongated, al most swallow-like and dark tipped. The wings were barred in a a darker brown and the legs were feathered. Those we saw yesterday were picking for seeds in cam el droppings along the road where it entered the cultivat ed area from the desert. As they pecked their way along the ground, one of the cocks threw back his head and gave a strange cry. Almost im mediately more birds came wheeling down the sky. For a second they seemed to be hawks, their flight was so free and strong-Tiien they seemed to be swallows, from the manner of their darting and wheeling. But as they set tled on the road a little far ther along, I could plainly see they were more sand grouse. Two of them, however, re mained aloft, soaring and dart ing about as if they were in an ecstasy. There seemed to be no reason for their actions. But presently one of those on the ground near us joined them and I saw the reason why. Both Veered A large bug was flying mad ly past, about 20 feet up, and though he veered in an effort to escape the upcoming dang er, the sand grouse veered, too, in his swallow-like flight and nailed him. I could make out other bugs' now, and as the two birds I, have been watcnmg came low1 er, it was evident that the in sects were the explanation of their seeming ecstasy. The bugs, however, were merely an hors doeuvre. A few sec onds more and all the sand grouse were on the ground hunting the seeds thaf form their favorite food. - (Released by McClure Newspaper Syndicate) Tree: By special arrange ment with editors of the En cyclopedia Americana, my panel of judges will award each week to the reader who Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport sends me the best true-life na ture adventure, the best na tur observation,' or the best question on nature and wild life, a complete 30-volume set of this handsome Sealcraft binding. Norman T. Why should we bex railroaded by vicious gos sip? Greta A. I am a widow ir my 50s with grown and mar ried children. About a year ago I met a man of my own age at my brother's home. He told me he was married, but never went out with his wife as she lived in a world of her own with her family and club activities. Norman and I hit it off just beautifully from the start. We seemed to like to do the same kind of thing and it was a joy to be able to have an escort to go out with again. Our relationship was purely one of friendship and dating. but it turns out that others did not see it that way. Recently I got a couple of anonymous letters of the most vicious kind, calling me every horrible name in the language. I feel that I can't go on with our friendship if I am going to be looked at in this light. Norman thinks it's foolish. Norman T. We are two mature individuals and we have a right to enjoy our lives as we see fit. Why should we be railroaded by vicious gossip of this kind? Anyone who is malicious enough to send an anonymous letter deserves the worst kind of punishment. Certainly self respecting people should not be influenced by it. Greta has suggested that it might have been my wife, but I think this is impossible as she often told me she would be happy to have me enjoy myself in my own way as long as she has her freedom. We have never been able to enjoy ourselves together. Greta and I know we are doing nothing wrong from any point of view. It is a blessing to both of us to be able to have a companion. Before we met we were both so terribly lonely and Greta told me at one time she almost thought she was on the verge of sui cide. Tha Council: We agree noth ing can be more dispicable than the kind of anonymous letters Greta describes, and that nobody should be "rail roaded by vicous gossip." There are, however, other considerations for both Nor man and Greta. Unfortunately, perhaps, it isn't possible in our society for a man and woman freely to enjoy the kind of friend ship they describe. Married couples do not wish to be come involved and avoid them. Their own children and other relatives are perplexed and reluctant to share social activities with them. As a result Greta and Nor man are forced into a relation ship which cuts them off from the rest of society. The more cut off they become, the more dependent upon one another they grow. They may eventually be come involved with on anoth er than they really want to be, or they may gradually be come quite bored with one another and find themselves unable to escape one another's company. Greta in particular, has much to lose by a relationship which cuts her off from the possibility of meeting men who might be interested " in marriage. She must also be made uneasy by the fact that her actions are open to unfor unate interpretations. We do not thing Greta and Norman must destroy their friendship, but we do think it would be better for both of them to stop dating. They should try to find group ac tivities that bring them to gether on a limited number of occasions. (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.)
