o o o O O o I a MAIL TRIBUNI, Mdford, Oregon, TkunIy, July 31,1958 Paris Fashions Show Girls 'More Like Girls This Fall o o By GAY PAULEY O UPI Womem'i Editor Paris (UPD Men will have something to look for ward to and at come fall and winter, with girls looking more like girls. Here is how Paris says we will shape up so far, that is. We still have the rest of the week and Dior to go. Busts Ooh-lah-lah! Waists They're back, but higher than nature puts them. No ign of the unfitted gunny sack of last year. 0Hlys Thank heavens, not m'rfu emphasis; no bow-dec- 3 4ret9l or hobbled derrieres, Svhick some of the chemise , variations of last year pro duced. Legs Well, all I can say a, after watching some of France's top designers chop away the material, better hie to the nearest make-me-over sal6n if your legs aren't com parable to Betty Grable's. Gams are extra fair game for the girl-watchers, with skirts as high as 20 inches from the floor. Silhouette Still narrow, but easy fitting. Fabric seems to glide loosely over the body in daytime clothes, rather than hugging it. For evening, full skirts dominate, although some designers like the sleek, long formal dinner dress. Coasts are bulky, and many have coilars more the scale of a rape. Hair-dos The "Ma, you j caught me necking," look; mussy and fluffy at the front and sides. Some of the mod els looked as if they had used an egg-beater instead of a - comb. But the hair is smooth at the back, usually tucked up neatly, French - twist fashion. The men who complained about what the sack concealed won't complain about what the empire revealed. For we may as well face the facts. The high-waisted sil houette is, so far, the "look" which has swept through U. S. and European collections as if all designers were one great mind running in the same rut. Yet thcempire, as it's done today in bulky wools and heavy silks, is one to give even Marilyn - Monroe and Jayne Mansfield pause. It calls not only for perfect legs (skirts are 10 and 20 inch es from the floor) and for a 309 EAST MAIN 0)0) 1959 very slim waistline, but also for a small bosom 34 or 35 instead of a movie star pin-up of 38 or 39. In this latter cate gory, the empire as Paris shows it and unless modi fied to fit individual figures will turn anything other than an ideal figure, size 10 or less into a dowager type. French Designers French designers, showing their fall and winter collec tions this week for some 600 reporters from all parts of the world, took to the empire as if the French hadn't invent ed it in the first place with the resolution at the end of the 1700 s and the rise of the Emperor Napoleon to power. Whether the rest of Paris's haute couture including the famous House of Dior will go along was to be decided as more firms displayed their collections. Only Coco Chanel, the grande dame Paris couture, this far refused to buy empire or anything else besides her classic, unbuttoned jackets, slim skirts, and coordinated silk or jersey blouses. She left virtually all waist lines where nature put them. Valley Couple Return After Two Week Trip Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Deger ness, 520 Dakota avenue, have returned from a two week vacation. The Deger nesses spent one week at Union creek and then travel ed on to Yakima, Wash., where they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Woodin. While there the visitors' son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Degerness and son, Craig, from Spokane, were also visiting. Medford's Sheath Appears In Fashion Shows Paris (UPD Look what's sneaking back into fashion the sexy sheath. This little dress, a lost waif during the brief reign of the sack, emerged cautiously and is not yet offering competi tion to the high-waisted em pire . silhouette which . had dominated almost all Paris designers' collections for falJJ ana winter. - But the sheath is there, hugging every curve, in both daytime and cocktail clothes. One of its major boosters is Serge Matta, who made his debut this week. Other de signers have returned to fig ure flattery with the waist cincher. Whether more of the same is on the way will be determ ined today with the powerful House of Christian Dior shows. Yves Saint Laurent, the late Dior's successor, talked to UPI just before "curtain time" but gave no hint of what was coming. "I'll just, show clothes I like," he said. This was Saint Laurent's second Paris collection. The one for the Dior New York wholesale firm, shown three weeks ago, placed belts high. But otherwise there was no hint of the empire. Matta, a native of Chile, was one of three of the young er set of designers to show Wednesday. The others were Guy Laroche, 33, and Michel Goma, 25. All three pampered a girl's midriff. Goma left waistlines where nature put them in his daytime clothes but lifted them for evening. Laroche showed both the normal and the you-know-what, I'll be darned if I'll say empire again, but the lat ter dominated. Matta provided a little something for everybody in his youthful and zestful clothes. He brought back the bell-shaped skirt, that pleas ing silhouette which curves from a slim waist into several yards of fullness at the hem. 4 Visitor Returns To Ohio Home Mrs. Homer K n o w 1 e s, Youngstown, Ohio, returned to her home last week after visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Preston, 186 White Oak drive, Medford. Robert Every, Oregon State college extension entomolo gist, says no sure-fire method has been found to eliminate rail insects but homeowners can take certain measures to reduce insect nuisances. Al though most insects don't bite or sting, they often collect in large swarms cause discom fort, and sometimes get so thick they "pave" driveways and entrances. - .. (UPD Keep the sun in mind when choos ing curtain fabrics, says a col lege home management agent. Sun is a curtain's worst en emy, so fabrics should be chosen according to the am ount of sunlight they are ex posed to, says Irene Crouch of North Dakota State college, i Nylon is a strong fiber and washes easily, but it cannot take exposure to sun, she said.
