Local Fallout Increased He said low-level explosions pick up dirt and make it radio-active, thus increasing local deadly fallout. But he said total fallout was not in creased. , Sen. Clinton P. Anderson (D-N.M.), member and form er chairman of the Senate House Atomic Energy Com mittee, engaged in a heated dispute earlier this year with Lewis L. Strauss, now retired as chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, on this subject. Anderson contended the military had deliberately withdrawn atomic weapons from the stockpile to make them "dirtier." Strauss hotly denied this and so did the military. Anderson said today, "I am very glad they finally con firmed what I said. I have seen so many weapons already altered I was sure they would some day have to say so." He said he was not object ing to such alteration. "It is the responsibility of the mili tary to have all types of weap ons for specific purposes," he said in an interview. "It both ered me that thfey kept talk ing about clean bombs as if that were the only thing they were interested in." WATCH THAT BOTTLE Derby, England' (UPD The managing director of one of Britain's largest mineral water firms told housewives today they "might as well" give their children bottled beer than homemade ginger beer. Bill Sturgess said lab oratory tests showed that a sample of fermented home brewed ginger beer contained more than 7 per cent alcohol, compared with the 3 to 4 per cent alcohol found in bottled beer. into gap-toothed grins at the first friendly overture. The castle itself has 200 rooms, and long, steep flights of stairs and parapets which suddenly turn into corridors and ledges that fall to the rocks below. I reached Jumblatt's castle after a two-hour taxi ride from Beirut, passing through at least a dozen bandit road posts with nothing more than my American passport and the garrulous amiability of my cab driver. Leader Holds Court In the courtyard below the castle were several hundred rebels armed with rifles, belt ed hand grenades, (subma chineguns and cartridge belts crossed over their shoulders. Jumblatt is a leader of the Druze sect, an offshoot of the Islamic sect which the Savior is yet to come and that he will be born of man. I was led up three long flights of stone steps and taken into a large room with straight-backed armchairs. Jamblett walked into the room followed by a strange array of men, some in uni form, some in Western style suits, but most in native dress. Jumblatt shook hands and motioned me to a seat on his left. The others sat around the room, then one by one came forward to speak in Arabic. Jumblatt was holding court. After 15 minutes Jumblatt turned to me. Marines Must Go He is an ascetic type who speaks accented but good Eng lish. He once taught at the Sorbonne in Paris. I asked him what message he had for the American peo He said first the Marines should go. Perhaps they were as President Eisenhower said, helping preserve Lebanon's independence and integrity. he said. But the country must work out its own internal af fairs, he said. .The rebels, Jumblatt said, aia not want .Lebanon in Gamal Abdel Nasser's United Arab Republic camp nor in Russia's, but they also did nol want it occupied by Ameri can troops. I asked if his men would fight the Americans. Jumblatt said they did not want to fight the Americans but would do so if the Ma rines came up into the moun tains. We talked for 20 minutes. Then I rose to go. Jumblatt shook my hand limply. All the men sitting afound the wall stood up and return ed my farewell wave. MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtdford, Oregon, Monday, July 28, 1MI 7 'Breakthrough' In Cancer Battle Said Imminent Washington (UPD Dr. Le Roy E. Burney, U.S. sur geon general, says a "break through is imminent" in the battle against cancer. Burney, head of the Public Health Service, also urges all Americans under 40 who have not yet had Salk polio vac cine shots to do so before the polio season hits its peak. Burney issued a statement Sunday on polio. Later he talked about the possibility of cures for several types of can cer "within a generation." Voices Optimism Whether the "imminent" break-through on cancer "means one year or five years, I don't know," Burney said. He voiced optimism "on the basis of reports from the National Institutes of Health and from throughout the country." He said evidence has been brought to light which may pin the cause of some types of cancer on viruses. If this were true, he said, vaccines and antibiotics would be of help jn fighting the disease. In his statement on polio, Burney said there were 52 new paralytic cases reported last week the, highest week ly total so far this year and two cases more in the com parable week last year. In spite of last week's rec ord number, Burney said to tal paralytic cases so far this year were far below last' year's total. Buy At Builders Supply QUALITY BLOCKS Bricks, Flues, Drain Tile 727 W.
