t O Judges Pick Miss Colombia As New Miss Universe Friday Night Long Beach, Calif. (UPD Luz Marina Zuloaga, reared in the rigid pattern of South American tradition, had a chance last night to celebrate her surprise triumph as Miss Universe of 1959 at the page ant's coronation ball. The 19-year-old Mis3 Co lombia, picked by judges as Miss Universe from five final HarryWarnerDies In Be! Air; One Of Film Brothers Bel Air, Calif. (UPD Har ry Warner, 76, one of the foufcdine brothers of Warner Bros. Film Studio, died Fri day night in his home of cere- bra occlusion. Warner's death came with in a year of several other out standing film pioneers, in cluding Louis B. Mayer, Har ry Cohn, Jesse Lasky, .Al Lichtman and Don Hartman arner and his brothers Jack, Albert and Sam, got their start fti the movie indus try in 1903 when they opened a pioneer movie theater at New Castle, Pa. In 1926 they Qbacked the first of the "sound" pictures, "The Jazz singer, starring Y1 Jolson. The night the "talkie" onened to rave reviews in New York, Sam died. World's Largest Warner Bros. Studios went on to become the world's largest. Under Harry's direc tion the studio grew to 22 sound stages on more tnan 1 in arrc of ground in nearby Burbank in the San Fernando Valley. Jack was production head while Albert handled distri bution and fiscal matters. Harry was the oldest of 12 children born to Benjamin and Pearl Warner. The family moved to Baltimore from Po land when he was six. During the past decade, Harry lived in relative retire Oment, continued to serve as a director of the studio. He divided his time between New York and California, rac ing thoroughbred horses and raising livestock on his roll ing woodland hills ranch. Winner of Awards Harry was the winner of numerous movie - making the 0citizenship awards, among 5 them the Veteran's of Foreign Wars gold medal for citizen ship, the National Red Cross certificate for valued serv ices and an honorary degree of humanities from Rollins college. During the war his studio produced a number of mili tary training films and raised millions of dollars for the Army relief fund with the filming of "This Is The ' Army." All proceeds from the film were turned over to the fund. o In recent years the studio has cut its movie production and turned to the making of television films. In 1953 Har ry and Albert sold stock in the studio to an eastern group and Jack became the largest single stockholder.. He subse quently ws named president. Mid-West Police Seek Calif ornian ' Rock Island, 111. (UPD Po lice in Illinois and neighbor ing states early Saturday sought a California-bound mo torist who wrried a rabid pet dog in his orange-colored Volkswagon bus. State police said they doubted if driver James Chil son, Whittier, Calif., knew his dog developed rabies as a re sult of a bite from another rabid dog in Gary, Ind. Chilson's pet later bit a man in Gary, police said, and subsequent tests showed it had contracted rabies. The brown-haired, brown eved beauty, who speaks on a few words of English, was an underdog in the final bal lotine. with both Miss Brazil, Adalgisa Colombo, and Miss Body of Reedsport Man Taken From Umpqua Reedsport (UPD The body of Lester Vernon Pridel, 47 was found floating in the here Friday and recovered by Reedsport police. The body had been in the water about seven days. Pri del, a Reedsport logger, re ported missing July 17 after setting out in a skiff was on a camping trip. The skiff was found with one of his shoes in it last week. An autopsy has been ordered, police said Grange News... Phoenix Grange Those whto attended Phoe nix Grange Tuesday evening July 22, saw informative col ored slides exhibited by John Eddy of California Oregon Power company. They were taken by Morrisson and Knud sen construction company and consisted of views of several valley towns and of Rogue, Umpqua and Klamath rivers. Of particular interest were those of the power develop ment project on the Umpqua river. He said the slides had been shown all over the U.S. and in some foreign countries. The program was arranged by Lec turer Mrs. Frank Perl and pre ceded the regular meeting Visitors were Mr. and Mrs, Delmar Smith of Central Point Grange. Smith exhibited a sketch of the proposed Jack son county what the exhibits would consist of, and how ttiey how they might be ar ranged to the best advantage He asked for products suitable for the booth and volunteers to assist and relieve those in charge of the booth. State Fair will continue for 10 days this year instead of the usual sev en days, he said. Mabel Cox announced the sales slips project picking up, and that $16,000 worth had been turned in last quarter. July is the beginning of a new quarter and she hoped the number of sales slips would continue to increase HEC Chairman Coral Schoeder reminded members of the proposed rummage sale to be held Sept. 6, and urged all to keep it in mind and work for a succesful sale. The Phoenix Grange picnic held in Lithia park was at tended by 52 persons. A card for A. J. Chapman, who is ill, was signed by all those present. The attendance at this meet ing was smaller than usual, due to the visitation meeting of Enterprise Grange the same evening, and which was attended by some of our mem bers. The display table by Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Quinn con sisted of pictures of places of interest in Washington, D.C. including the capitol and oth er buildings, monuments and also several documents and bills which had come up in Congress for discussion during Mrs. Qumns visit there last winter. It was a rare party-going chance for Miss Colombia, brought up in an upper class South American household in which she was sheltered from contact with men. Miss Zuloaga, according to her mother, has never been kissed except a publicity peck "by TV's Wyatt Earp, Hugh O'Brian, and has never been on a date, with or with out a chaperone, Excellent Cook But her mother hastened to say that she was an excellent cook and housekeeper, and that her other talents includ ed horseback riding and tennis playing. She is also a college student in her coun try. The other four finalists Friday night Miss Poland, Miss Brazil, Miss U.S.A., Eurlyne Howell, and Miss Ha waii, Geri Hoo, accepted their defeats gracefully. , Miss Bra zil was runner-up. There was some grumbling among some other contest ants, notably Miss France, who said she thought Miss Holand who didn't make the finals should have won. The victory is worth $11, 000 to Miss Universe and a new convertible, as well as an option to make tours in behalf of two sponsors. Her mother said Miss Universe would be allowed to take the tours, but that she felt a movie career might be diffi cult because of her language problems. Public H-Bomb Test Cancelled Washington (UPD The United States announced Sat urday it has cancelled the public H-bomb test exDlosion that had been scheduled in the Pacific this summer. Foreign observers and re porters and photographers for the American press and broad casting industries had been in vited. The demonstration was to have been of a type of bomb generating a drastically re duced amount of radioactive fallout. The State Department said the United States had "re luctantly decided to cancel the demonstration test ex plosion." It gave this reason: Bad weather threatened to delay the test so long that scientists could not attend it and also be present at the Internation al Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy sched uled to meet at Geneva -on Sept. 1. State Department spokes man Lincoln White said there was "no political significance'! to the cancellation. He said un favorable weather has been delaying the current series of U.S. nuclear tests in the Pa cific. ASSURES COOPERATION Baghdad. Iran (UPD The Western -controlled Iraq Pe troleum company, which con trols the rich Kirkuk oil fields, assured the new Iraqi government Saturday of its continued cooperation." Hearing Secret Clipper Carrying 45 Argentia, Nfld (UPD A crippled Pan American World, Airways Clipper carrying 45 persons made an emer gency landing here today end ing a dramatic four-hour 460 mile turnabout flight from over the darkened Atlantic. There was no panic, and all 36 passengers and 9 crew members were unharmed. The pilot of the DC-7 Capt. Robert P. Postlewaite, 42, of Wilton, Conn., at one point planned to ditch his craft in the Atlantic after one engine went dead and the plane de veloped a runaway propeller. But, finding he could main tain altitude after dropping from 17,000 to 6,000 feet, Postlewaite decided to make a run for the U. S. Naval base airfield here. The New York-to-London-bound clipper set down without incident at 12:36 ajn. Mrs. Berkson is Two Youths Arrested Medford city police arrest ed two youths Saturday morn ing in the downtown area and are holding them for Albany authorities who want them on charges of auto theft. Police records show that when questioned the youths admitted stealing another car earlier Friday evening and driving itifrom Corvallis to a point near Albany, where they took the station wagon.
