The Medical Roundup . ni. jz ' Emeritus Consultant In Medicine, Mayo Foundation Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation Dr. Corn Oil and Coronary Heart Disease At the recent International Congress of Internal Medi cine, held in Philadelphia, P r ofessor Haqvin Maim ros, Professor of Medicine at the University of Lund in Sweden re ported that he and his asso- ciates had 'i2J been feeding giuup ux pa tients on a diet in which all animal fats, such as butter, cream, milk, ice cream, cheese, eggs and fat meat, as well as margarine, coconut oil, and hydrogenated oils, were re placed by corn oil. Corn oil was used in the preparation of foods and in the baking of Dreaa stuns. The diet con tained vegetables, potatoes, sugar, bread and other foods prepared with flour. Forty per cent of the cal ories were in the form of corn oil. The patients were oer mitted to eat all the fish they wanted. Some of these per sons have been on the diet now for two years or more. Thirty of them. who began with an abnormally high level of blood cholesterol have, for the most part, shown a drop in this level and in some cases it has gone down to normal. Unfortunately, in a number of the cases (and this has hap Dened several times in Amer ica), after some weeks the level of serum cholesterol has gone back up again. In other cases, the corn oil diet didn't make any change in the blood cholesterol even at the start. No Objection Today, thousands of men and women are using corn oil in their diet, and I see no ob jection to it. What bothers me is that, as yet, we physicians cannot be sure that the level of cholesterol is the really im portant factor in producing arterial disease with heart at tacks and little strokes. It may soon be found that the rise in blood cholesterol and the arterial disease are both due to some abnormality in body chemistry that, as yet, we have not identified. Also, it may be that we will find that the abnormality in cho lesterol chemistry is due to some disease in the liver. It would be good if we could find some substance in vege table oils that is beneficial. Then we could concentrate it and use it as a medicine. Recent research indicates that it would be unwise for anyone to try to live on a fatless die. This causes physi cal and mental distress and, curiously, it can cause the level of blood cholesterol to rise! There is evidence to show that when a person is stout, a reduction type of diet is likely to help him, but if he is thin, there is not much use in dieting.
