Crisp, Garden Fresh Local , CUCUMBERS House Unanimously Votes Compromise Reorganization Bill Washington fDPD The House unanimously approved a compromise bill granting President Eisenhower powers to reorganize the Defense De partment for the nuclear-missile age. By voice vote, the House ap proved the measure as drafted by House-Senate conferees. There was no debate. The com promise legislation now goes to the Senate. Some Requests Ignored It gives the President most of what he asked for but ig nores several powers he re quested. Chairman Carl Vinson (D Ga.) of the House Armed Serv ices Committee read the House a letter from Eisen hower which said that "ex cept in relatively minor re spects, the bill adequately meets every recommendation to the Congress on this sub-y ject." Eisenhower submitted the sweeping reorganization plan at the outset of the current congressional session in the wake of Soviet Sputnik suc cesses. It was a major demand on his part. Meanwhile, Defense Secre tary Neil H. McElroy reported that the Middle East crisis has demonstrated that U. S. de fense forces "are ready, and that they can move rapidly to those parts of 'the world where they are needed." Missile Development , The secretary made the statement to the Senate Pre paredness Subcommitte. He was recalled for what Chair man Lyndon B. Johnson (Tex.) termed "an audit of the na tion's defenses." McElroy's prepared state ment included an optimistic report on missile develop ment. It stressed the fact that the Defense Department has recently let a contract for the development of a liquid fuel engine with "about one mil lion pounds thrust." He commented that since his last subcommittee appear ance two incidents have "test ed the spee,d of our forces' re action to situations of ten sion." Cloudburst Floods Highway Near Yreka Yreka, Calif. (UPD A heavy cloudburst flooded a Southern Pacific spur track and placed a foot of water on U. S. Highway 99 Wednesday night about six miles south of here. ' . The track was expected to be in operation today. Rail road officials emphasized that no passenger traffic was af fected by the washout. Cars were slowly traversing the flooded half-mile of U. S. 99, the California Highway Patrol reported. The waters wer reDorted receding, "al though light rains continued through the night. Sawmill Workers Win NLRB Election Portland (UPD The AFL CIO Lumber and Sawmill Workers Union won a Na tional Labor Relations Board election over the AFL-CIO International Woodworkers of America to represent em ployees at the Santiam Lum ber Company in Sweet Home by a 133 to 109 vote. He testified that tests have shown that the Navy's Polaris missile can be fired from a moving platform, from under water, and that "the direction of the missile is not hampered by the motion of the launch ing site." MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Thursday, Jifly 24, 1938 7 Utility Property Shows Big Increase Salem The 1958 true cash value of utility property in Oregon has increased about $84 million, or 9.87 per cent more than last year, C. W. Chambers, chairman of the state tax commission, has an nounced. The increase, similar to that of last year, is due mainly to additional property being con structed and used in utility service, he said. Gas, electric and telephone utilities show the largestjincrease geared to population and business ac tivity gains in the state. Electric, companies have added hydroelectric and steam generation facilities in Baker, Clackamas, Jackson, Jeffer son, Klamath and Multnomah counties as well as substan tial expansion in transmission and distribution facilities. , The telephone industry has added facilities for radio re lay, direct distance dialing and dial equipment conversions..
