House Unanimously
Votes Compromise
Reorganization Bill
Washington fDPD The
House unanimously approved
a compromise bill granting
President Eisenhower powers
to reorganize the Defense De
partment for the nuclear-missile
age.
By voice vote, the House ap
proved the measure as drafted
by House-Senate conferees.
There was no debate. The com
promise legislation now goes
to the Senate.
Some Requests Ignored
It gives the President most
of what he asked for but ig
nores several powers he re
quested. Chairman Carl Vinson (D
Ga.) of the House Armed Serv
ices Committee read the
House a letter from Eisen
hower which said that "ex
cept in relatively minor re
spects, the bill adequately
meets every recommendation
to the Congress on this sub-y
ject."
Eisenhower submitted the
sweeping reorganization plan
at the outset of the current
congressional session in the
wake of Soviet Sputnik suc
cesses. It was a major demand
on his part.
Meanwhile, Defense Secre
tary Neil H. McElroy reported
that the Middle East crisis has
demonstrated that U. S. de
fense forces "are ready, and
that they can move rapidly
to those parts of 'the world
where they are needed."
Missile Development ,
The secretary made the
statement to the Senate Pre
paredness Subcommitte. He
was recalled for what Chair
man Lyndon B. Johnson (Tex.)
termed "an audit of the na
tion's defenses."
McElroy's prepared state
ment included an optimistic
report on missile develop
ment. It stressed the fact that
the Defense Department has
recently let a contract for the
development of a liquid fuel
engine with "about one mil
lion pounds thrust."
He commented that since
his last subcommittee appear
ance two incidents have "test
ed the spee,d of our forces' re
action to situations of ten
sion." "One was in connection

Middle East," McElroy de
clared. "We believe that the rec
ord clearly shows that our
forces are ready, and that they
can move rapidly to those
parts of the world where they
are needed."
Agency Organized
McElroy also reported that
the Defense Department's Ad
vanced Research Projects
Agency has been fully or
ganized. He reported progress
on Thor and Jupiter inter
mediate range missiles and
said they should, as previous
ly announced, be. ready for
assignment overseas this year.
He reported progress on the

He testified that tests have
shown that the Navy's Polaris

Utility Property
Shows Big Increase
Salem The 1958 true cash
value of utility property in
Oregon has increased about
$84 million, or 9.87 per cent
more than last year, C. W.
Chambers, chairman of the
state tax commission, has an
nounced. The increase, similar to that
of last year, is due mainly to
additional property being con
structed and used in utility
service, he said. Gas, electric
and telephone utilities show
the largestjincrease geared to
population and business ac
tivity gains in the state.
Electric, companies have
added hydroelectric and steam
generation facilities in Baker,
Clackamas, Jackson, Jeffer
son, Klamath and Multnomah
counties as well as substan
tial expansion in transmission
and distribution facilities. ,
The telephone industry has
added facilities for radio re
lay, direct distance dialing
and dial equipment conversions..

j1 Sandwiches made with chunk stvfe Light Meatrun
-It doesn't take long. Even mayonnaise
can't hide the differences. Just look under
the mayonnaise for the tuna meat that
has a lighter, clearer color, a sure sign
that it came from fresh, prime quality1
tuna. Next, find the tuna mixture with the
firm, tender morsels. Bumble Bee Tuna
sandwiches are never too dry, never too
moist, never "squashy." Finally taste. Look
for gentle, fresh-fish
flavor. It's always the
pay-off for knowing
your tuna. There you
