o Softballers To Contend M and W Chain Saw and Parsons Motors aim to keep " undefeated records intact Thursday evening in Jackson County Softball , association scuffles at the Camp White O diamond. M and W plays the Rogue Valley Dairy Maids in the 7 p.m. starter. Parsons opposes the fast-rising Butte Falls Log gers in the second scrap. The Chain Saw crew has won all of its games so far ' and Parsons has three vic tories. Butte Falls has taken Its last three tussles after dropping its opening encounter. Hollywood Park Ends Successful 1958 Meeting Inglewood, Calif. (UPD Hollywood Park today hailed the race meeting which came to a close Tuesday as one of the more successful in its history despite the competi tion of the Dodgers and a busi ness recession. From a racing standpoint, the presence of Gallant Man made the meeting an artistic success as the English-bred colt Tuesday added the $107, 600 Sunset Handicap to his victory in the $162,100 Gold Cup. Last year the track set a national attendance record when 1,705,306 persons clicked through the turnstiles for a daily average of 31,006. This season the total was 1,699, 801 with a daily average of 30,906, off less than one per cent and well ahead of any other track in the nation in daily attendance. The pari-mutuel handle fell a little mo;e than 5 million dollars below last year with $121,589,639 wagered this year against $127,099,699 last year, a drop of about four per cent. Jockey Willie Shoemaker for the sixth straight year was tlft leading rider. By scoring a triple Tuesday he brought hi seasonal total to 80. House and ion Expected To Be on Quiet Side Washington (UPD The con gressional spotlight focused today on committees consid ering everything from orange juice to the Middle East crisis. Action on the floors of both the House and Senate was ex pected to be on the quiet side. The House met to consider routine business while the Senate business schedule was uncertain. The foreign affairs commit tees of both houses were to get their daily briefing pn the Middle East situation from Undersectary of State Chris tian Herter. The situation re ports started Tuesday. A House agriculture sub committee met to discuss price spreads in the frozen food industry with special ref erence to recent developments in frozen orange juice con centrates. Veterans organizations ap peared before the House Vet erans Affairs committee to testify on the bed situation in VA hospitals. Hearings on Policies A Senate small business subcommittee began hearings on the procurement policies of the Defense Department, military services and various civilian , agencies of the fed eral government. The Senate was drawing its breath after giving President Eisenhower a victory for his trade bill. Renate Brahar, 12, who dis- Labor Committee Passes Welfare, Pension Fund Bill Washington (UPD The House Labor Committee to day approved 20 to 8 a com promise bill to make labor and management publicly account able for-- operation of em ployee welfare and pension funds. The measure is a revised version of a bill passed by the Senate as an outgrowth of Senate Rackets Committee in vestigations. The committee put "teeth" in it by requiring sworn reports on fund oper ations and criminal penalties for wilful failure to file them. Way Cleared for Action Final committee action cleared the way for the House to act on the Senate-passed labor reform bill which is sep arate from the welfare fund issue. Speaker Sam Rayburn had been holding this bill on his desk awaiting today's ac tion. , Before the final committee vote, Rep. William H. Ayres (R-Ohio) tried to amend the legislation to exempt employer-run funds from the re porting requirement. He said he would offer the amend ment again on the floor and predicted it would pass.
