Sci ence has long wondered why. Compound Sprayed To get the answer, Eisener put cockroaches on paper which had been made sensi tive, chemically, to this com pound. When the compound was secreted by the insects, the contact turned the paper bluish-black. Eisener then irked them and found they did more than merely secrete it they sprayed it, as a person sprays an insecticide at cockroaches. But they sprayed only when Irked only when he pinch ed them or pulled one of their legs or otherwise disturbed 1 Student Antagonism All But Evaporated At New York Schools Ittr't aote: This Is the Last of rga articles on schools for prob- ta eiiiiTea in -New York cut. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.), which would permit raw ma terial producers to seek pro tection against imports of a processed form of the same commodity. The amendment was design ed chiefly to protect Oregon cherry growers against can died cherry imports. The amendment caused a split between Morse and Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) who opposed the amendment; Morse told the Senate he re spected Neuberger's decision And criticized "those who draw great issues between the two senators from Oregon" when they disagree. 'Tiltwing' Plane Success in Tests Washington (UPD The Army says the Vertol Air craft Corporation of Morton, Pa., has successfully tested the first "tiltwing" plane de signed for vertical takeoffs and landings. In the test, conducted re cently at Philadelphia, the plane completed a transit into forward flight and then hov ered tt both ends of a 7,500 q oot runway. Air t yelopment Xesvaander Dies O Efcyton, Ohio (UPD Maj. ) Sen. Thomas L. Bryan Jr., 5, commander of the Wright &CT development Center from q &uA. 1, 1955 to Sept. 17, 1957, it6 Tuesday. fcryan, who was named commander of WADC at 47, was termed one of the Air jrft's most promising tech nical officers. Je died at Wright-Patterson Air Force base hospital O following an eleven-month ill ness. . o Lords, Jesters and maybe Bishops. "These boys all are not hoodlums because they go to 701, Brooklyn. The truth is that the school they come from was very bad for them. The teachers in their schools could not get along with them very good, so that is why they are here now. "In 701 we have good lunches which are free . . We get out at 2:10 and go to the subway in groups. Educational Movies "The great number in classes is 15 boys (when we 'doubleup'). 1 Monday before lunch we have educational movies. "We have a school library but we cannot take books home. "The school is an old one but it is getting fixed up fast . . The author of this hymn was, of course, one of the 300 New York boys who had been suspended last March from regular schools which many of them had been terrorizing and placed in two "700" schools. One of them was set up in Greenwich Village, despite the uproar . of "neighbors" who made it plain at the be ginning that they did not want "hoodlums" in their midst. But this resentment ha$ all but evaporated, and the boys have behaved themselves. The Kiwanis and Lions clubs in the "Village" have taken the lads under their wing. Book Welcoming Gesture One neighbor sent each boy a book as a welcoming ges ture. Jackie Robinson, the former major league baseball star, came downtown to ad dress one of the school s week ly assembly programs. He promised that each student would receive a new suit of clothes when school reopens in the fall. William .A. Hamm, the Board of Education's Associ ate Superintendent in charge of the "700" schools, suggests they may be the answer to "blackboard jungles" in other large cities. Pupil Costs Higher He concedes that it costs approximately twice as much ($800 a year) to keep a pupil in a "700" school than in a regular school, but. Hamm points out that a reform school costs the taxpayers sev eral thousand dollars for each inmate. But who can measure in dollars and cents such things as the girl in one "700" school who was fashioning a cross from plastic foam blocks? It was shortly before Fath er's Day. "It's for my daddy's grave," she said proudly. 'Wyalt Earp' Sued For Bodily Harm Hollywood (UPD Hand some Hugh O'Brian, televi sion's Wyatt Earp, was ac cused of inflicting "bodily in jury" on a woman today in a S65.000 damage suit on file in court. The action was brought by a woman identified as Zelia Bennett, who was reported to be a friend of the television actor's houseboy. As for O'Brian, he said he "didn't lay a hand on her" and was baffled by the whole thing. them. That indicated the spraying was intended to be defensive though not partic ularly against people So Eisener constructed an "arena" in a laboratory dish lined with the paper, and in it pitted cockroaches against insects which eat them the ant, the praying mantis, the spider and carabid beetle. Ants and beetles "attacked readily," Eisener reported to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They rushed right up to the cockroaches and grabbed on. Instantly the paper all around was stained blue-black. The eye couldn't see the spraying, but it was happening. And in stantly the ants and the beet les retreated, "before they had inflicted noticable in jury." And as they retreated, their bodies were i n contortions from partial paralysis. They recovered quickly. But they had had enough. The spiders also were repelled, but only by mature cockroaches. This may explain why this is a fine year for cockroaches. They've "learned" many tribes of them to deal suc cessfully within their body chemistry with the insecti cides which used to devastate their populations. Science is working on new insecticides to give them their comeup pance. Leader of Marines Hopes Folks at Home Get Things Straight By JACK V. FOX United Press International Beirut (UPI) "I only hope that people back home are getting it straight and that there isn't a lot of arm waving and breast-beating about our boys under fire." The speaker was a young Marine lieutenant from Tarry town, N. Y. He is a Princeton graduate who now commands one of the Marine companies stationed in the dock area of downtown Beirut. Subject to Firing His company has been sub jected to firing from rebel snipers for the past five days. "For Pete's sake, don't use my name or I'll get my head chopped off," he said.- "But .WEARING 10 -pound log ging chain padlocked to neck, 'Angeline Cliett, 19, Waller, Tex., stands in front of White House in hopes President Eisenhower will help mother, Irene, regain ownership of 703-acre ranch. I think it's vital that our peo ple get things straight. "This sniping, for example. I can see the headlines,' 'Leathernecks under fire for five straight days.' The facts are that not one of us has been hit, and the bullets are going high overhead. "I am convinced they are not trying to hit us. They just like to shoot guns, I think. I saw one guy up on a roof raise his rifle and fire into the air in three different ' direc tions. "Of course, it's not very pleasant to think they could hit you if they wanted, but it sure could be worse." Boredom Main Enemy The fact is, the main enemy of American troops in Leba non now is boredom. Marines on the beach long ago dug their defenses, and since then about the only break has been a daily dip in the Mediter ranean, a few yards away. Pvt. Donald Knock of Cam den, N. J., said, "That water sure is salty, a lot more than the Atlantic, but it feels awful good after sitting out there in the sun." Next to him was Sgt. James Cabbagestalk, of Pittsburgh. He waved expansively at the blue sea stretching off from the beach. "Room with a view," he said. LEFT LEG TENDER Mexico City (UPD You have a legitimate reason to feel insulted if your host serves you the right leg of a chicken. Pablo Sanjenis, chef at Mexico City's Hotel Plaza Vista Hermosa, says a chick en's left leg is more tender than the right. He backs up this contention by pointing out that the chicken sleeps on his right leg and develops greater muscles on that side.
