WALZEJt UPI Financial Edilor New York (UPI) Wall Streefe experts are giving the larket a new pat on back in the belief the Middle East situation will give the gen eral business picture new color. Some of the commentators who recently warned Elmer rlzr against pros pect of sellon have turned about and are now bullish again. Standard and Poor's say the market may be subject to nervousness from time to time "but the situation does not call for any basic change in the generally constructive m- vestment policy heretofore ad vocated." o Standard holds that the market's action in the face of disturbing international news has been encouraging, "testi fying to the strength of un derlying demand and the re fusal of investors to panic." The Reynolds & Co. com mentator sees business mov ing forward at a more rapid pace and that factor he holds seems likely to justify fully the present selling price of most equities. Sees Confidence "Thus while the likelihood of a worthwhile setback in the market, which we visual ized as recently as last week, can probably be ruled out in the light of subsequent events on the international scene," he says, "we are un able to generate any enthusi asm except on a long term basis for buying most stocks." William R. White, analyst for Hornblowar & Weeks, be lieves that the market's re cent show of strength in the face of disturbing events in tSte Middle East may be at tributed to: (1) "An increasing maturity in appraising world events, and (2.) Sustaining influences afforded by aggressive insti tutional demand for equities based on easy credit policies and hedging against infla tion." Joseph F. Ganville, analyst for E. F. "The implications," he says, "now point to the possibility of the widest participation in the equity market on the part of the public that has ever occurred." Edmund W. Tabell, analyst for Walston & Co., however, finds the industrial average still bumping against the heavy overload supply that exists between 480 and 520. "It remains extremely doubtful," he says, "that the market will be able to push through this supply at this time." We should report Dick's running away to the police. ineresa r. But ne s a good boy. Marvin F. Our son, Dick, is 12 years old and a very big problem to us. I believe he is somewhat retarded but my wife denies this. During the past year Dick has run away from home sev eral times. He never runs very far and has always come back by himself, but he has managed to give us a good scare. I've told hirrt and told my wife that the next time he runs away I'm going to re port it to the police immedi ately. I think the juvenile authorities should deal with him. For his own sake, I'm afraid to coddle him. My wife says it would be wrong to get Dick into trouble with the police, but I say she will realize how foolish she's been when the boy commits a real crime of the kind that makes headlines. Theresa F. I just hate it when Marvin always keeps bringing up the police and the law in connection with Dick. Why does he do that? Dick has never hurt anybody IVi ACRES 2 bedroom home, nicely located and real clean. All fenced. Ideal for retired couple. Garden raise beef. 4-H projects or chick ens. Kicea to sen at $68d0 Terms. He adds that there seems to be no indication that the policy of buying stocks of favorable situated industries on minor weakness and of using strength to dispose of u n f a v o rable commitments should be altered. International Statist ical Bureau. says that the period of tension probably will be a protracted one with the mar ket getting into the shadow of fear of government con trols. The bureau believes the latest developments strength en the business outlook some what for later in the year, as suming war is avoided. Fitch Stock Survey says "a careful and selective approach to new commitments is now warranted more than ever." and I don't believe he ever would hurt a fly. I feel if we ever reported Dick's running away to the police, he would be taken into custody and put among real "tough boys. Dick isn't like that. He's a quiet boy and he only runs away when he is having lots of trouble with his schoolwork. Dick's teachers say he does not pay enough attention to his schoolwork and he can do average work. I try to see that he does his homework, but he is very sloppy about it. He doesn't read as well as his younger brother and I guess that upsets him. The Council Juvenile authorities report that most runaways are doing poorly in school, but their mental abilities are often average or above average. If Dick's tea chers say he can do average work, it means certain emo tional problems are standing in the way of his learning. He evidently runs away be cause he cannot stand the challenge of examinations and the disgrace of failure Marvin is doing Dick an in justice when he adds to the child's burden with threats of police action and his dire warnings . of crimes Dick could commit. The boy's disappearance should be reported to the po lice for his own safety; but Dick should not be forced to look on this as a form of pun ishment. He should not be taueht to fear the police when he has committed no crime. He would not be put away with tough boys. Running away from home is not an offense. It is mere ly an act of cowardice or a desperate bid for love. The child who does it frequently is suffering very much and needs plenty of help and un derstanding. He needs to believe his par ents think well of him. He needs to amount to something among his family and friends. Praise, affection and en couragement are not coddling and these parents should not be afraid to give Dick plenty of this kind of attention. They should help him develop skills and hobbies and encour age him to take an afterschool job. Marvin and Theresa may feel that they want further help with the boy and should ask the school authorities for. a recommendation of a psy chologist or clinic which deals with such problems. , (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.)
