The Padres made it three straight over the Canadians in the opener of a double header at San Diego Sunday, putting down a Vancouver rally in the ninth inning to score a 4-3 decision. The Mounties made a late-inning upsurge pay off in the finale to take a 7-3 victory. The win Ictft Vancouver three games behind the pace setting Padres and 2V games behind second place Phoenix. Blake Griggs pitched his team to victory behind a four hitter and he picked up two hits at the plate. Jhe losers made four errors Including a costly one in the first inning. After losing pitcher Dick Hayes had re tired two in the top of the first Estin Kiger singled, one of four he got during the game. On an error Kiger reached second Bill Worlein then batted another single and Kiger ad vanced to third. The next K. Falls batter, Steve Binney, mashed out a double to drive 4n what proved to be the win ning run. Klamath Falls scored again In the second and Grants Pass matched them with one run in the bottorf? of the second. (UPI) Persistent Patty Berg reigned today as the queen of women's golf the first time she has don so in a home town tour ney. Miss Berg fired a 72, the last in a succession of four below-par rounds Sunday to capture the American Wom en's, Open with a total of 288. The title, worth $1,225, came to Miss Berg in a first appearance in a iajor tour nament in Minneapolis and enhanced her record as the all-time money winner in Women's golf. The new queen had an eight-stroke lead over the runner-up, LouSe Suggs. Salt Lake downed Portland twice, 4-3 and 7-4, and Seat tie and Sacramento split a pair, the Rainiers winning the opener, 10-9, and the Solons taking a 1-0 decision in the seven inning night cap behind the three-hit hurl ing of Roger Osenbaugh. Sacramento will host Seat tie again tonight in the only PCL game scheduled. Vancouver spoiled Bob Lemon's debut with San Diego in the second game with a three-run splurge in the sixth grame. Dick Bro dowsik came on to relieve the former Cleveland ace but was tagged for three more runs in the seventh. Ray Bar ker homered for the Mounties weekend found the Chaney Studs of Central Point drop three games. On Saturday night the Studs dropped a de cision to Prineville 5-4 after leading the home team 4-1 go ing into the bottom -of the seventh. Sunday's action found Cen tral Point drop loose ends of a double-header with Bend. In the first game Central Point was smashed for 19 hits and lost 17-1. The second game went an extra inning before the Bend nine won the en counter 5-4. Tuesday night the Chaney Studs meet Crater Lake Mo tors at Chaney field at 8 p.m. The Studs will be out to avenge a 2-1 loss they suf fered at the hands of the Med ford team last week in dis trict play. The suits charged the city could not lawfully go ahead with plans to deed the acre age for a major league base; ball park. Attorneys for the plaintiffs had contended that the city had no legal right to transfer land fn the ravine to the Dod gers because of "public pur pose" deed restrictions. The land originally had been ac quired as a public housing site. Litigation has held up work by the Dodgers in their plan to build multimillion dollar, 50,000 seat stadium in the ravine. Injunctions prohibiting the city council. Mayor Norris Poulson and the city clerk from carrying out any provi sions of the contract were signed by Judge Prager. HOCKEY GAMES ON TV New York (UPI) Twenty regular-season games in the National Hockey League will be televised nationally by the Columbia Broadcasting Sys tem during the 1958-59 cam paign, it was announced today by William C. Hal Woodeshick went the distance for the Padres in the opener, picking up his 10th win of the season against two losses. Joe Durham smashed a two-run homer for Vancou ver in the ninth. Big Crowd on Hand A season high of 10,039 fans attended the twin-bill Zanni allowed Spokane only four safeties while coast ing to his 10th win. The Giants collected 14 hits off three Indian hurlers, includ ing a two-run homer by Dusty Rhodes in the opening frame. Rhodes had three runs-bat-ted-in on the same number of hits while shortstop Andre Rodgers chipped in with four. The crowd of 5,406 brought the season attendance total to 189,225 and the series total to 36,165 for seven games. Salt Lake's double victory over Portland snapped a four- game Bee losing streak. Joe Christopher lined a pinch sin gle in the bottom of the ninth to give the Bees the edge in the first game, and Jim Mc Daniels and Dick Barone belted homers in the finale to make it a clean sweep for the "day. The opener, scheduled for seven innings, was the third- extra-inning game of the se ries, won by the Beavers, four games to three. Seattle took advantage of five Sacramento errors to win the first contest despite falling short in the hit depart ment, 12-9. Medfo: Black Posts In SOTA Drags Sunday Ashland roadster driver Wayne Wiley gunned the powerful rear engined modi fied roadster built and owned by Carl Perdue, Beldon Web ber and himself past all com petition Sunday to emerge as top eliminator in the South ern Oregon Timing associa tion drag races held at Camp White. Five dragsters were on hand to post the potential fast speed but a combination of bad luck and mechanical failures sent all but two of them to the pits. Neither of these remaining contenders, one powered by a Triumph cycle engine and the other by a Ford flathead, had what it takes to get in front of the sleek Oldsmobile powered MacKay Favored In Clay Court Tennis Tourney Chicago (UPI) Barry MacKay, No. 1 man on the American Davis Cup team, and Bernard Batrzen of Dal las, Tex., were expected to battle it out in the national clay courts championships opening today at the River Forest Tennis club. MacKay, promising " young star from Dayton, Ohio, was top-seeded on the basis of his performance in the recent Wimbledon championships where he outlasted his team mates by surviving to the quarterfinals. Bratzen, winner of the 1954 clay courts title, was seeded second. Neither Vic Seixas, who won the meet last year, nor Althea Gibson, America's Wimbledon queen, defending champion among the women, ewere entered in the tourna ment. Mrs. Dorothy Head Knode of Forest Hills, N.Y., was top seaded among the women. She captured the title in 1951 and 1955. Karol Fageros, Miami, Fla., was seeded second. James Wins Stock Races At Valley View Ashland Cecil James cap tured first in the main event and Cliff McGilvery won the trophy dash in stock car races at the Valley View Speedway here Saturday night. Winning speed on the Wi ley, Perdue, Webber roadster was a quite respectable 104.40 m.p.h. Top time of the meet was registered by Noel Black, who piloted his "Skylark 220" to a speed of 124.58 m.p.h. He was forced to withdraw from eliminations because of me chanical difficulty. Appearing for the second time this season was "Pee Wee," a tiny dragster weigh ing less than 300 pounds and powered by a 650cc Triumph cycle engine. Owned and driven by Jack White from Medford, this midget dragster won "C" 'class for dragsters with a top time of 80.35 m.p.h. In the eliminations, he edged out Jim Wilson, Grants Pass, by just inches to claim the first trophy for "Pee Wee." One hundred and seven en tries battled down to the line in 26 classes before a large crowd, as SOTA completed their third drag race slate of the summer. Next Sunday date for drag races is Sun day, July 27. The bond posted on the track record of 134.24 m.p.h. has been raised to $100 for this meet. Maids Lose to Buena Park in Softball Tilt The Rogue Valley Dairy Maids bowed to the Buena Park, Calif, girls' Softball team Sunday night 5-2 in an overtime contest at the Mem orial stadium, Camp White. The visitors collected only one more hit than the Maids' five but they capitalized on five errors by the local nine. The Dairy Maids led off the scoring in the second in ning after batters from both teams were set down in order in the first inning and the vis itors went down in order again in the second. Ellen Callaghan, top, hitter for the evening with a'single and triple for four times at bat, reached first on a single in the second. Pat Baron fol lowed and reached second on a fielder's choice, and Doris Hickson then hit a single to drive in Callaghan. Starting pitcher for the California nine, Ella Snook put the next batter out and then loaded the bases by walking Mary Ellen Attur bury. Relief pitcher Jan Hol land took it from there and fanned the next batter to re tire the side. In the top of the fourth the Buena Park girls collected two runs after having two outs. Jan Krunic started the rally with a single. Donna Baxter followed with another single with the help of a pass ed ball and two errors both girls scored. After hitting a triple she was driv en home by Pat Baron who was safe at first on a fielder's choice. The side was retired without further difficulty. Action slowed down then until the game went into ex tra innings. In the top of the eighth Cricken Virdan led off for Buena Park with a single and advanced to third on an error. Pitcher Holland then assisted her own cause by singling to drive in what proved to be the winning .run. Moving to the top of the batting order Lou Fischi then hit a triple to drive in Hol land. Bev. Soule followed with a sacrifice fly to right field and Fischi scored the last tally of the game. The Buena Park club crush ed a rally by the Maids almost before it got started in, the eighth inning when they man euvered a double play after lead-off batter Bernice Big ham gained first on a walk. Shirley Hanson hit a line drive to Cricket Virdan who doubled Bigham off of xirst. The next batter flied out to right field to end the contest.
