The Medical Scientific Studies of Dreams To many sensible physicians those inte rpretations of dreams which are patterned after those of Freud, are fan tastic, without any scientific basis, often very silly, and often disgust ingly sexual and stupid. In my own case, I have rarely been Dr. Alvarez able to see any sense to my dreams or any connection be tween them and my waking thoughts, now or in the past. Curiously, my commonest and most often repeated dreams have to do 'with my mountaineering days which ended some 30 years ago. I dream that I have started on a trip into the mountains with out some of my equipment, or often I have a more and more difficult time following a very narrow or obstructed trail, or climbing the face of a preci pice where hand-holds are get ting fewer and farther be tween. Throughout my life. I have had a recurrent nightmare in which, while walking through a dark basement. I am fright- Army Announces Plan to Reduce National Guard Washington (UPI) The Army has announced new ulans for reducing the Na tional Guard and paid ground reserves. The revised program calls for cutting the guard from 400,000 to 360,000 men and the reserves from 300,000 to 270,000 during the 12-month fiscal period which started July 1. All but 11 of the 27 Nation al Guard divisions will be cut, Each of the reduced outfits will have three instead of five "battle groups." Ten reserve divisions will be maintained, while four will be reduced. An earlier plan would have cut the actual number of di visions. This was strongly pro tested by many states and by many members of Congress. 40 Per Cent Reduction The National Guard infan try divisions to be maintained at full strength under the new setup include the 26th in Mas sachusetts, 28th in Pennsyl vania, 30th in North Carolina, 32nd in Wisconsin and 38th in Indiana. All other National Guard in fantry divisions will suffer a 40 per cent reduction in or ganizational strength, but the six Guard armored divisions will be fully organized. These are the 27th armored in New York, 30th in Tennessee, 40th in California, 48th in Georgia and Florida combined, 49th in Texas and the 50th in New Jersey. Contract to Be Let For Parking Area Portland First contracts will be let July 10 for grading a parking lot for the Oregon Centennial exposition and in ternational trade fair to be held in the summer of 1959. The combined parking lots eventually will cover 47 acres and accommodate 8,000 auto mobiles. The work being contracted for involves part of the form er Vanport site, use of which is being given the exposition by the federal government and a local radio station. The county also is building two new roads through Vanport as a contribution to Oregon's celebration of 100 years of statehood. Student All Smiles When Stopped by Cop Memphis, Term. (UPI) Jim Breazeale, Southwestern college student here, was all smiles when police stopped him, told him he was chosen traffic award winner. Breazeale was told to park his automobile and accom pany officers to a radio sta tion for an interview. But when he got back to his car another policeman had ticketed him for overtime parking. I imagine that when I was a child, a servant or some one, frightened me terribly as I was gomg through a dark basement. What has always impressed me about my dreams is that there is no logic to them; that while dreaming I am not dis turbed by remarkable incon gruities in what I see. The minute I wake I see how silly the dream was. Fades From Picture Also, I marvel that when in my dreams I meet people I seldom know who they are, or they are headless, or they change their appearance. If, in a dream, I meet a dear friend we are likely to ignore each other, and in a few min utes he fades out of the pic ture. Commonly, I dream that I have left some part of a city, or of a building, and must find my way back to it but I never succeed in getting back. Evidently, in my case, the thoughts that are travel ing around in some part of my brain are not supervised by that part or those parts which in waking hours would keep me saying, "That is ut terly foolish, illogical, and contrary to past experience." All my life I have marveled at the fact that rarely is the subject matter of my dreams influenced by the problems or painful thoughts that at the time have been obsessing me throughout my waking hours. This is one more rea son why I have always thought that the habit of giv ing glib explanations for dreams is not at all scientific. Such explanations are only guesses. Dreaming Studied For years Professor Nathan ial Kleitman, of Chicago, and his students have been study ing sleep and dreaming, with the help of scientific instru ments. A recording apparatus attached to the bed-spring shows when the subject stirs or turns over, and a camera can record each time just what he did. The electroen cephalograph, which records the tiny electric currents con stantly being formed in the brain, tells when the person iswake and when he is as leep, and a little apparatus re cords the movements of his eyeballs. In recent years, Drs. Kleit man and Dement have found that it is easy to tell when a person is dreaming. His body remains quiet but his eyeballs usually move rapidly. This discovery now enables the ob server to ring a bell that wakes the person as he fin ishes a dream. The person im mediately describes his dream speaking into a tape record er, and then he goes back to sleep. In this way many dreams can be recorded with clarity dreams which other wise would be completely for gotten by morning. Dr. Kleitman has found that for some 30 minutes after we drowse off our sleep tends to be very deep." Then our sleep becomes light, and it it during this period of light sleeping that we do our dreaming. Babies under 6 months and drunks show no sign of dreaming.
