The way he figured alcohol ics is that they're ridden hard by "reinformed learning." To show what this means, he gave two examples, that of a food-hungry rat and that of a love-starved woman. Compared To Hungry Rat The hungry rat is placed afcJ the entrance gf a maze. He smells the food in the box at the other end. So he runs the maze, finds the food, and eats Gold Beach. Green Peter Funds Voted Washington (UPI) The Senate Appropriations Com mittee has announced its ap proval of allocations to begin the new Green Peter flood control arid power dam on the Santiam river in Oregon. The ' $1,300,000 project was included in a report on fiscal funds for 1959. e The committee also added $750,000 to. start construction of the Gold Beach harbor pro ject. The Green Peter dam which is to be situated four miles from the junction of theCfean tiam and the South Santiam will be an earth and rock fill structure 370 feet high. Total cost estimated for the project has been set at $58,- 400,000. One million dollars has been appropriated for thbe ginning construction, -.and $310,000 to complete plan ning. The Gold - Beach harbog) project is planned for the mouth of the Rogue river in Currygjounty. Total cost esti mated ior building is $14 mil lion. Ingrid Bergman Tells Wedding Plan 'London (UPI) Swedish born movie actress gjlngrid Bergman announced Thurs day she plans to marry Swedish businessman Lars Schmidt Ivliss Bergman made the long expected announcement as she prepared to catch a plane foe Paris. . Rumors of a wedding hae been current for weeks. Miss Bergman has been sqigred around Europe by Schmidt ever since she got a legal sep aration from Italian movie di rector Roberto Rossellini in Rome, Nov. 7. In Rome, two Italian busi nessmen have brought bank ruptcy proceedings against Rossellini, chargingQim with failing to repay a $34,768 loan. TRYING IT OUT - London (UPI) One-legged prisoned Glyn Peters went to Wandsworth hospital to get a new metal leg Wednesday. His hunger, which was the nagging "drive" that sent him through the maze, is reduced and so he has learned in a "re inforced way" how to reduce it. Maze-running is on its way to becoming a habit. The woman feeling rejected and unloved by her husband, sees a box of chocolates. When she was a girl, chocolates add. ed up to love and affection her parents rewarded her with them. So she buys and eats the chocolates which re duces her "drive" of being un loved and rejected. "Learn ing" this was "reinforced" and this will be her habitual way of reducing the "drive." Causes of Alcoholism Varied In alcoholics, a number of unpleasant feelings may be the "drive. They're just about uncountable, Kingham said, listing frustration, fear, anger, loneliness, monotony, depres sion, and rejection. Feeling this "drive," the alcoholic grabs for the bottle and drinks in what Kingham called "the Blitz pattern" which puts him under. The "drive" is reduced, his learning of h6w to do it is reinfocred and he'll repeat. But since ' everyone has those unpleasant feelings now and then, the question is, why arenQ there more alcoholics? Kingham sought to answer it theoretically by suggesting that the relatively few per sons who do become alcohol ics are made uncomfortable by any "average mood," which is neither high nor low, and seek to avoid such a mood. If their backgrounds are such as to make them suscep tible to "the blitr pattern," this will-put them in the way of learning the drive reduc ing power of drunkenness in a "reinferced" way in shorf, they'll get- the "habit." Milk Price Rise Sought by Group . Portland (UPI) The gen eral manager of a milk pro ducers' association said here Thursday that higher union labor costs of milk distribu tors Should have been passed alon'to the people who drink milk rather than to the people who produce it. Glen A Richards of the Portland Independent Milk Producers association said producer costs also have gone upnd he said tl?e association, along with others, would con tinue to seek a milk price rise at the consumer level.
