Cosmeticians Promoting Green and Purple Look By GAY PAULEY UPI Women's Editor New York (UPD Around Manhattan: Our language is sprinkled with cliches concerning peo ple who turn green with envy or purple with rage. But I ' never thought I'd see the day ' when we women would turn either color with cosmetics. Yet, a new group of make . up shades includes emerald, ' amethyst, and amber. They're i all the brainchild of Charles of the Ritz cosmeticians,, who announce that we are in "for an age- of adornment." Recommended only for eve- j nlhg, and "for the girl with the camellia complexion and dark kair," the green make up includes green-toned face powder, made a little paler by blending with buff if the wearer doesn't have the cour age to look like a spring of mint; eyes shadowed with a " shade, called "fern"; lids out lined --with green; a dash of black mascara for what the .manufacturer called "the heavy lidded look"; and final ly, a dusting of the green power applied in streaks through the hair to match the rest of the makeup. The Berg Martens scored 134V2 points to lead east-west players. Second went to Mrs. Dolph Phipps and Mrs. Marrs Gibbons with a score of 13 1, and third to Mrs. C. L. How ard and Mrs. A. V. Lingaas, who scored 114V4 points. John Russell and Harley McMasters were fourth with 1 1 1 1? points. To keep light-colored fab rics clean while sewing, dust hands with corrstarch before beginning. The cornstarch will absorb perspiration. with red hair, and begins with a mauve face powder, con tinues on through a "fine mist of silvered eye shadow", char coal liner for the lids, and blue muscara. A United Press Interna tional story from Carshalton, England, this week prompted me to ask the National Shoe institute, a trade organization, how long fashion intended to keep us women wearing the needle heels. The dispatch said that Carshalton' s city fathers were complaining that women's shoe spikes are piercing road surfaces, mak ing it easier for the sun to melt the tar layer underneath. High Heels The institute says that de spite some domestic griping about narrow heels tangling with escalators and sidewalk grills, the slim heel will be a favorite for fall. "Skinny as ever . for eve ning," Said a spokesman. "But if is any comfort to you, some of the new daytime shoes do "have the broader, stacked heel. "These are several layers of leather and are not the old-faskjpned bulky heel; they're still built with the louis curve." Representatives w e r e from Klamath Falls, Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, Cot tage Grove, Creswell, Spring field, Coos Bay, Eugene and Phoenix. A total of 72 at tended. Mrs. John Cook, guardian neighbor of the Phoenix lodge, opened the session and the drill team of the Medford lodge escorted officers and special guests to their sta tions. ' A program was given by the Misses Cynthia- Owens and Judia Stewart, who pre sented accordion duets; Sid ney Yarnell, a dance number and Mesdames Mary Esther Newton, Coos Bay, and Mrs. Martha Shipley, Ashland, who presented a skit. ., Harry Allen, Springfield, district guardian neighbor, conducted the district session. He introduced Grand Repre sentatives Silvia Stang, Klam ath Falls, and Elmer Newton, Coos Bay; Mrs. George Drake, Phoenix, past member of the grand laws committee; Mrs. Mabel Matheny, Cottage Grove,, district field manager and the guardian neighbors of the Ashland and Phoenix lodges, Mrs. Ada Jones and Mrs. Cook. , s Corsages were presented to the district officers and drill team members. The rally closed with refreshments served by the host circle, with Mr. and Mrs. Chester Parker, chairman of the sup per committee. The tables were decorated with daisies. Fooflighfers Play Being Rehearsed "Laura," a suspense-type three-act play by Vera Cas pary and George Sklar, is now in rehearsal by the Medford Footlighters. It will be pre sented for a five-night run later this month, the dates to be announced in a few days. The play, said to be "full of thrills and surprises from opening to final curtain," is being directed by Thayer Tar vin who has been actor, di rector and technician in many past Footlighter productions. The cast of eight is equally divided between newcomers and old timers in the local civic theater. They include Frank Buchter, Al Reiss, Bill Petty, Les Boardman, Miss Linda Smith, Mrs. Helen Ash ley, Mrs. Dorothy Sloniger, John Wright and Mrs. Wright. Couple Here Mr. and Mrs. Y.'s. Serve a spicy fruited gela tin ring filled with chicken salad for a ladies luncheon. Simmer the syrup from a number 2Vi can fruit cocktail with IV2 tablespoons mixed pickling spices about 10 min utes. Strain, and use as part of the liquid in making the gelatin, adding enough fresh lemon juice or vinegar to make the mixture tart. Chill until slightly thickened, and fold in the colorful fruit cock tail. Chef's Salad A chef's salad makes a won derful dinner for a hot night. Start with a big bowl of crisp greens. Add wedges of toma toes, drained, canned green beans, sliced cucumbers and green onions, slivers of cold meat and cheese, and toss with a sharp French dressing. Garnish with ripe olives and quartered hard-cooked eggs. Serve with crisp rolls or French bread. Man Says Modeling Too Easy By MARY PRIME United Press International New York (UPI) Lionel Wiggam is one of the highest paid models in the nation, but he doesn't relish the job. He's also a playwright, but he never goes to the theater. "Modeling is a wonderful career for creative people be cause it gives us leisure time. As a means to an end, it's fine. But as an end, it leads to un happiness. It requires no tal ent and it so short-lived," said Wiggam, who will have a serious play, "The Prime Of Life," produced on Broadway in the fall. "You make such easy, fast dough that people want to throw everything aside and go into modeling. Men write to me about giving up jobs like law practices for it. It's really sad. They don't stop to think that you don't last long in this business," said the tall, handsome model, wh6 is known around New York as the "Wallachs man" because he has posed for so many of the firm's newspaper ads. He is 6 feet tall, looks like the man next door, measures a "perfect size 40," and doesn't gain weight "except martini fat" he said, as he dug into a gooey dessert. Wiggam has had stories published in every magazine in which he's appeared. "I can make more money in one day by modeling than I can in a month by writing. But the minute I have a hit play, I'll retire and become a full-time writer," said author Wiggam. A native of Indianapolis, he studied drama at Northwest ern University, quit school temporarily to work his way around the world, and was graduated from Princeton in 1943. He went to ' Hollywood, where he landed an acting- writing directing contract and" spent five years doing movie scripts. He wrote the screen plays of "Tap Roots" and "Smash-up." He has been a model for five years.
