The third and fourth de grees were conferred 'on 15 candidates, two of whom were from Roxy Ann and the re mainder from Upper Apple- gaxe, the degree work being exgmplified by the Roxy Ann team with faultless precision. Those -initiated were Neal Rcborts and Boyd Davidson of Roxy Ann, and Alice Hibberd, Stanley and Barbara Larson, Hester and Ruth Knutzen, Al- vin and Emma Heffron, Ed ward and Clara Flesher. L. and Elena Christean of Upper Applegate. in welcoming the 13 Upper Applegate members, Worthy Master Menno Bach- mann stated they constjjuted the largest group ever re ceived, into membership abone time in the hjtory of Upper Applegate Grange. o During the brief business session, the resolution to sell tne site of the old Grange hall at McKee bridge was given its final reading and passed with no dissenting votes. Q Reporting for the Relief committee, Chaplain Mildred Redhead stated Brother Hugh Scovell, who underwent spinal surgery at Sacred Heart hos pital, expects to return to his home shortly. Brother Harlan Cantrall is ill, and the Rev erend Earl Best is recovering from injuries sustained in an accident. Not?sof appreciation were read from Sister Ethel West and Bertha Haskins for cards, messages and flowers received during their recent illnesses, and sister Kathleen Scovell thanked . the Grange for sim ilar courtesies received by her huSband. Letters were also received from the two 4-H members who, were given scholarships to summer school in Corvallis by Upper Apple gate Grange. Steward Edward Finley re minded all Upper Applegate members that sales slips will be due at' the next meeting, July 11. Community singing of "The More We Get Together,". led by the Worthy Master, opened the literary program which had been arranged by Lectur er Anna Scott. This was fol lowed by an inspirational reading by Chaplain Mildred Redhead. Mary Beth Ramsey entertained with a piano solo, "Valse" by Durant. For an encode number, she played a special arrangement of "Sweet Hour of Prayer." Sister Veva Saltmarsh presented a hum orous skit entitled "A Bit of Kentucky Philosophy," and as a concluding number, Worthy Master Bachmanri led the group in community sing ing of "Smiles." Albert F. Ledebuhr, an Army chaplain, is helping the Army develop a character course designed to improve the moral strength of yojng men. Ledebuhr . said the lessons contain no specific religious teachings but are slanted to cover basic moral character istics that are the foundation for religion. "If we can convince a young man he is not the man he ought to be, and that there is a lot of room for improve ment during the week, then we can teach him religion on Sunday," he said. The lessons, which will be given to young soldiers throughout their tours but especially during basic train ing, stress such basic virtues as duty to authorities, the na tion and God, plus a rundown on the Ten Commandments. Ledebuhr is a native Mil waukeean who is touring the country with the first chap lain exhibit sent out by the Army Chaplain Board. New Zealand had a record total of lambs born in 1957.
