President opens the meetings by asking the mem bers to bow their heads in silent prayer. Only once at the first cabinet meeting over which he presided did he have it opened with an audi ble prayer. He then called on Agriculture Secretary Ezra T. Benson, an apostle of the Mormon church, to ask God's blessing on their meetings. The President presides without gavel. After the si lent prayer, he asks for the first presentation. A cabinet member usually outlines the topic in general terms and in troduces a staff aide to make the detailed presentation, often with charts and oc casionally with movies or slides. A general discussion usually follows. But there are no votes in the cabinet. The final decision on acceptancer ejection, mod ification or postponement for further study is the Presi dent's alone. . Gray's job includes seeing that the President's decisions on cabinet matters are carried out. Four times a year, a rep resentative of each depart ment or agency reports to the cabinet on the progress of the programs and policies which have been determined at the meetings. Definition of Jew Brings Resignations Jerusalem, Israel (UPI) Two members of Premier David Ben-Gurion's cabinet resigned Sunday night over the government's definition of a Jew. The coalition cabinet de cided last Sunday that for of ficial registration purposes a Jew was anyone who claimed to be a Jew. Religious Affairs Minister Moshe Shapiro and Post Of fice Minister Joseph Burg re signed because their National Religious Party maintains the orthodox position that a Jew is a person born to a Jewish mother. Quotes From the News By UNITED PRESS , INTERNATIONAL New York Lebanese Foreign Minister" Charles Malik, on the disorders in his country: "There is confusion in the minds of most people that this is only a rebellion and therefore the government is dealing only with the rebels. The government is dealing with pres sure from outside from powerful agencies directed against us." Tokyo A spokesman for the Japanese Central Meteoro logical Board, on the U.S. nuclear blast at EniwetoL Sunday: "We think it is the most powerful explosion set off by the United States since that country began its current type of tests at Eniwetok in April. 1956." Washington Chairman John L. McClellan (D.-Ark.) of the Senate Rackets committee, on reports the Mafia may be trying to take control of the U.S. economy: "Information has come to us that there is an underworld syndicate which has infiltrated into some phases of the labor government and into some businesses." Washington Vice President Richard M. Nixon, who was spat on when he visited Latin America, on the idea of send ing major league baseball teams to tour South America: "Of course some wags might suggest this shouldn't be done unless we allowed the spitball to be used again." Television Fails To Do Justice To Dancers on Sullivan's Sunday Show By WILLIAM EWALD , would have had a chance to unnea tress International New York (UPI) I can't think of any recent show which so clearly defined the nature of the television beast as the TV debut Sun day night of the Moiseyev Dance Com pany. Ed Sullivan devoted his full CBS-TV William EwaM hour to the Russian troupe and I must say at the start it was an hour shot through with a wonder ful exuberance. It was a little like having a whirlwind in the living room. It was an hour full of swirl and whoop and good humor and stylish corn I mean that in the best sense. I don't see how anyone could possibly fault the company. But ah, there he goes goes with his buts again it also was a terribly frustrat ing show. And before I go on, I would like to say the frustrating show has nothing to do with the dancers who performed magnificently. And it had nothing to do with Sul livan, who should be busting with pride today for his serv ice in showcasing the troupe for the millions who never TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY DON'T miss (Little Jimmy Dickens) Grand Ole Opry Dance. I see tnem What it has to do with is the nature of the TV medium: Television is simply not suit ed to the dance. Dancing exists in space the spatial relationships between dancer and dancer and between the dancer and the space around him. Without that feeling of space, ybu get a flat imita tion of what's going on. It's a little like trying to judge the magnificence of a Gothic cathedral from a series of tiny snapshots. Television is a medium of containment. It compresses, It squeezes. The Moiseyev dancers burst outward. They exploded. As a result the camera was hard put to even keep them on its canvas. It was not the fault of the cameras. When a camera tried a long shot, the dancing was not too well defined. When it tried medium shots of in dividual dancers, the rest of the troupe was lost When it tried closeups of feet, torsos were snipped out. When it tried overhead shots, feet were blotted. I don't think this means that TV should forego dancer shows. It merely means that unless a dance show is specifi cally designed to meet TV's limitations, it will have to settle for partially satisfac tory results. Contributed To TV My minor carping' aside, Sunday night's Sullivan show was an enormous contribution to television. It demonstrated that dance companies can be well, I hate to use the word, but fun. The Moiseyev girls looked jolly and, unlike so many female dancers, amply proportioned. And the men, unlike most male dancers, looked like men. One side note: There was one almost : excruciatingly embarrassing moment at the tail of the show when a woman, translating the words of impressario Moiseyev started to say: "I am delight ed . . ." when a derisive hoot was heard from the audience. Sullivan turned a withering glance toward the offender the likes of which I've not seen since Leo Durocher last looked at an umpire. It was a glance justly deserved. TV Stars Aboard Disabled Plane Reno (UPI) A plane carrying 11 stars of Holly wood television made a forc ed landing here Sunday after the plane's hydraulic system failed, causing the landing gear to drop. Among those aboard were Jack Kelly, star of the TV show "Maverick," and com edian Chill Wills. The1 group had been attending a rodeo. . When the landing gear dropped, the pilot decided to have the trouble repaired be fore continuing to Los An geles, an airline spokesman said. FRESH Two Are Injured In One of Three One-Car Accidents Two people suffered minor Injuries in one of three one- car accidents Sunday and early Monday morning, ac cording to state polcej Injured in a one-car acci dent yesterday were Glenna Allen, 30, and Barbara Dean Allen, 14, both of route 1, Central Point. State p.olice said both were treated at a local hospital. Driver, Elbert Joe Allen, 41, of route 1, Central Point, told officers he was rounding a curve on the Dead Indian rd. about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, four miles east of Highway 66, when his daughter Pat ricia Allen, 3V2 years old, grabbed the steering wheel to keep from falling. The car swerved onto the shoulder of the road, slid sidewise, hit an embankment on the north side of the road, then struck a rock. Extensive damage Officers said extensive damage was done to the front end of the car. Ella May Elizabeth Wells, 22, of Happy Camp, Calif., was cited for violation of the basic rule following an acci dent about 2:30 a.m. Sunday on the Table Rock rd. north of the Bybee bridge. The pickup truck she was driving failed to make a curve near the intersection of the Modoc and Table Rock rds., went off the road, knocked down a telephone support pole and turned over in a ditch, police Rose Flutters Onto North Pole Rome (UPI) A lone rose fluttered down today onto the frozen wastes of the North Pole, thrown from the cockpit of a passing airliner. The rose, the first of 40 which will be thrown down one by one day by day, com memorates the Italian and Scandinavian explorers who lost their lives aboard the airship Italia 20 years ago. The gas-filled airship split in half over the Pole. One part, containing the motors, crashed to the ground. The other half, containing its hu man cargo, soared into the frozen arctic air and was never seen again.
