The warning lights are only

The. President opens the
meetings by asking the mem
bers to bow their heads in
silent prayer. Only once at
the first cabinet meeting over
which he presided did he
have it opened with an audi
ble prayer. He then called on
Agriculture Secretary Ezra
T. Benson, an apostle of the
Mormon church, to ask God's
blessing on their meetings.
The President presides
without gavel. After the si
lent prayer, he asks for the
first presentation. A cabinet
member usually outlines the
topic in general terms and in
troduces a staff aide to make
the detailed presentation,
often with charts and oc
casionally with movies or
slides. A general discussion
usually follows.
But there are no votes in
the cabinet. The final decision
on acceptancer ejection, mod
ification or postponement for
further study is the Presi
dent's alone. .
Gray's job includes seeing
that the President's decisions
on cabinet matters are carried
out. Four times a year, a rep
resentative of each depart
ment or agency reports to the
cabinet on the progress of
the programs and policies
which have been determined
at the meetings.

Religious Affairs Minister
Moshe Shapiro and Post Of

Washington Chairman John L. McClellan (D.-Ark.) of
the Senate Rackets committee, on reports the Mafia may be
trying to take control of the U.S. economy:

What it has to do with is
the nature of the TV medium:
Television is simply not suit
ed to the dance. Dancing
exists in space the spatial
relationships between dancer
and dancer and between the
dancer and the space around
him. Without that feeling of
space, ybu get a flat imita
tion of what's going on. It's
a little like trying to judge
the magnificence of a Gothic
cathedral from a series of
tiny snapshots.
Television is a medium of
containment. It compresses,
It squeezes. The Moiseyev
dancers burst outward. They
exploded. As a result the
camera was hard put to even
keep them on its canvas.
It was not the fault of the
cameras. When a camera tried
a long shot, the dancing was
not too well defined. When it
tried medium shots of in
dividual dancers, the rest of
the troupe was lost When it
tried closeups of feet, torsos
were snipped out. When it
tried overhead shots, feet
were blotted.
I don't think this means
that TV should forego dancer
shows. It merely means that
unless a dance show is specifi
cally designed to meet TV's
limitations, it will have to
settle for partially satisfac
tory results.
Contributed To TV
My minor carping' aside,
Sunday night's Sullivan show
was an enormous contribution
to television. It demonstrated
that dance companies can be
well, I hate to use the word,
but fun. The Moiseyev girls
looked jolly and, unlike so
many female dancers, amply
proportioned. And the men,
unlike most male dancers,
looked like men.
One side note: There was
one almost : excruciatingly
embarrassing moment at the
tail of the show when a
woman, translating the words
of impressario Moiseyev
started to say: "I am delight
ed . . ." when a derisive hoot
was heard from the audience.
Sullivan turned a withering
glance toward the offender
the likes of which I've not
seen since Leo Durocher last
looked at an umpire. It was
a glance justly deserved.
