' Ship on Drawing Joatt And not too lon in th fu ture. Q The ship that carried "Bucfc Rogers" into his private solar system many year$ ago now is on the drawing board, accord ing to Krafft Ehricke of the Convair Division of General Dynamics Corp. of San Diego, Calif. Ehricke wouldn't go furth er than that Wednesday in discussing the proposed space ship, other than ( to say that it was a private plan which had drawn the interest of the government. But, the scientist predicted that with nuclear power the United States could set up a research instrument station on the moon "within 10 to 15 years." He said he had developed a system to land instruments on the moon by enclosing them in inflatable rubber contain ers which could be dropped on any partf the "moon sur face like a "bouncing rubber ball." Landing units would be car ried aloft in a lunar satellite, inflated and dropped toward the moon's surface. Reverse recfctt thruits would bring tht gts inflated containers on "softly." Rear Admiral John E. Clark, deputy director of the Advanced Research Project Agency, predicted a manned ttcllite would be fired into orbit by the United States in two or three years. Reisoninr power of a hu man crew is necessary to maneuver where the govern ment wants the satellite to f o, the admiral said. "We must let the automatic instrumentation do what it can do better, and let man do that for which he is best qualified," Clark said. "It will be a short trip. We will probably bring him back after one trip around." Lumber Freight Rate Hearing Asked .Washington (UPI) The chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission has been asked to schedule an immediate hearing on the proposed lumber rate 'reduc tion on shipments from Ore gon to California and Arizona. Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) told Chairman Howard Frees of the 'ICC that he has re ceived scores of communica tions on both sides of the Commission's recent suspen sion order. Morse said a de cision will be handed down within a very short time after completion of the- hearings. He said the issue greatly af fects the economy of hundreds of individuals and many com munities, throughout Oregon. T it-p nrVit ?Vh-,tt' Editor's note: Mickey Rooney bounces to the typewriter to deny that-he is making a comeback Says Mickey, -"I've never .been away." By MICKEY ROONEY For United Press International. Hollywood (UPI) I keep hearing and reading about my "amazing and stupendous comeback" and am ' frankly quite amazed by both the noun and the preceding ad jectives. " What amazes me about the whole thing is this comeback business. How, I ask,, could I come back when I never went away? - . .;i The fact is that while I wasn't away, I might have been.- A couple of years ago, Coffee Prices Lowered Two Cents New York (UPI) Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. has cut prices, two cents a pound on two of its own brands of coffee sold at retail, dropping prices to the lowest in five years. . The action follows similar cuts Wednesday by Grand Union Co. Both, moves reflect surplus crops in Latin Ameri can coffee producing coun tries. I was what show' business calls "cold." ' - What happened, .". frankly, was that my manager, Red Doff, heard that Martin Man- ulis, producer of CBS, "Play house 90," had on his sched ule a lV-hour drama about a despicable television corned ian who made his own life and the ,lives of all those who surrounded him unbearable. The rumor was out that several of TV's top comics had turned down the role because they didn't want to appear before the public in such a miserable characterization. We grabbed it so fast we could Hdt'have cauglit our selves with a head start. "The comedian" was the beginning of Rooney's new deal. Right around the time of the telecast, I was lucky enough to land an Oscar nomi nation for "The Bold and the Brave," a fine picture that somehow "escaped." Escaped when applied to a movie means that the picture wasn't considered important to publicize properly and hence played to the minimum possible audiences. How did "The Comedian" and the Oscar nomination help the cause? The com ments were favorable and pro ducers started to offer me other roles. Before long I had enough offers to keep busy for the next two years. Ten foreign and 31 U. S. schools have so honored him. They ranged from small col leges . such as Gettysburg near his Pennsylvania farm to Oxford University in Eng land. They include Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Colum bia universities. Eisenhower got his first honorary degree from Queens University of Belfast, Ireland, in August, 1945, when he was the top general of the victori ous Allied forces in World War II. Two other foreign universities Louvain in Belgium and Oxford also conferred honorary degrees RETIRED LAWYER DIES Norfolk, Conn. (UPI) Ferrars Heaton Tows, a retired law yer, died here on Tuesday at the age of 82. He was well known as a philatelist and also was a prominent Mason. Tows practiced law in New York for many years after graduating in 1902 from the Columbia University school of law. upon him that year, His top year for honorary degrees was 1946 when he got them from seven American and four foreign schools, in 1948, he received seven two foreign and five Ameri can. He didn't get a one in 1949 and 1951; It has been one, two, three or four for other years since 1945. All 12 of Eisenhower's hon orary degrees since he be came president have been American. He also was awarded 19 American . ones before he took over at the White House. His last foreign honorary degree was confer red by the University of Ath ens, Greece, in March, 1952. The President limited his participation in graduation exercises this year to Mary land schools Mount St. Mary's College at Emmits burg, the U. S. Naval Aca demy and Johns Hopkins. He probably will be invited to deliver another commence ment address at Emittsburg next year. Another Roman Catholic school there, Saint Joseph College, then will cele brate the sesquicentennial of its founding, as Mount St. Mary's did this year. Mount St. Mary's is for men, St. Joseph for women. Eisenhower did Mount St. Mary's a favor in 1919. As a major commanding Camp Colt at Gettysburg he sent two Army physicians to help the college fight an influenza epidemic. The President's top White House aide, Sherman Adams, is noted for his New England dourness. Seldom has he shown much of a sense of humor since coming to Wash ington. Consequently, it came as quite a surprise when Adams lightened a recent commence ment address with a story on himself. After reading the lewon at an Episcopal ehureh services here commemoratinc o the bicentennial of the birth of President James Monroe, Adams received a very elder ly parishioner who always carried an umbrella to church even on sunny Sundays. The parishioner praised Adams clearly enunciated reading of the lesson and added: "It is truly regrettable that you ire a statesman with a vast salary instead of a decent clergyman with a modestly earned stipend in the place of my friendly enemy Dr. Eld ridge (the pastor), for his preaching has proved as use less as your statesmanship." travel the IKEACFAST in MEDF0R9 SUPPER in BOISE om VVCi II J"""""iillllllllHj Departure: Lv. 7:15 148 N.
