At Your Druggist Cancer Society Education Group Outlines Plans The Jackson County Edu cational committee of the American Cancer society met Junt 6 in the home of Mrs. Earl Lawson, education chair man, to outline plans for bringing the life-saving liter ature of the Society to the general public. Mrs. Scott Ellis, printed ma terials chairman for the county, pointed out that al most a quarter of a million lives a year could be saved by the individual having a check up with his doctor when the cancers could be discovered in a localized, curable stage. About 150,000 a year are now being saved by prompt and adequate medical treatment, it was stated. Volunteers in attendance from Medford were Mrs. Ivan Harrington, Mrs. Robert Buck, Mrs. N. J. Wilson, Mrs. Rodger Sterton, Mrs. George Lewis, Mrs. John Welch, and Mrs. C. B. Collins, co-education chair man. Volunteers from the county at large were Mrs. C. O. Paxton, for mer Medford resident now in the Army, was recently as signed to duty in the office of the Army attache, American embassy, Havana, Cuba. Ma jor Paxton has been on duty in Honduras in recent months. Major Paxton will take up his duties in Havana July 1. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Paxton, their three sons and one daughter. Water Color Exhibit Here The Percy Manser water color exhibit may be viewed at Clifford Platz gallery in the Purucker Music House, 111 North Central avenue, through July 7. Home Management Teachers Say Laundry Still Needs Hot Water . Fargo, .JN. D. (UPI) New cold water washing pro cesses provide the proper tem perature range for "wash and wear" fabrics, but the bulk of household laundry still re quires hot water. Home management teachers at North Dakota State say an advantage of cold water washing being advertised in new deluxe washing machines is that it minimizes wrinkles especially the deep-set ones in wash and wear garments. However, studies of family laundry show that a big part of the household wash con tinues to be cotton items that get the heavier soil and need hot water for good cleaning. To Dance Thursday The Y Knot Twirlers Square Dance club will hold a dance starting at 8 o'clock tomorrow night in the social hall at the Medford YMCA. Doug Fosbury will call and all square dancers are invit ed. Potluck refreshments will be served. Eagle Point Eagle Point Lions and auxiliary held joint installation of officers "at Rogue River lodge Saturday, June 7. Thirty members at tended the dinner which pre ceded the ceremonies. ' Guests included Dr. and Mrs. Elmo Stevenson, Ashland, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thompson", Coos Bay. Don Geren, president of the Lions' club, presided. Mrs. Thompson was install ing officer for the auxiliary and inducted into office were Mrs." Lee Hayes, president; Mrs. Stewart Hopper, vice president; Mrs. Thomas Van Etten, secretary - treasurer; Mrs. Jonn Johnson, corres ponding secretary. Pages for the evening were Mrs. Charles Martin and Mrs. Jake Olsen. Dr. Stevenson was install ing officer for the Lions, and made a brief address. Taking office were LeRoy Regester, president; Glen Clymer, first vice-president; Nat Etzel, sec ond vice-president; Charles Martin, third vice-president; Stewart Hopper, secretary treasurer; Harold Knutsen, lion tamer; Fred Bruegger, tail twister; Mr. Van Etten and Mr. Johnson, Lion direc tors. Corsages and membership pins were presented to auxil iary officers. The tables were decorated and corsages made by Mrs. Clarence Davies and Mrs. Ted Flury. j Eagle Point Club Instal Is Officers Eagle Point Mrs. A. O. Floyd, Medford, president of the Oregon Federation of Gar den clubs, installed new offi cers at the last meeting of Eagle Point Garden club. They are president, Mrs. C. C. Cushman; vice-president, Mrs. W. E. Davies; secretary, Mrs. Ted Flury; treasurer, Mrs. Glenn Hale, and historian, Mrs. Ray Harnish. Mrs. Floyd reported on the recent, national federation convention held in Seattle, and urged the club to send a delegate to the state conven tion, June 16-18 at Eugene. A picnic scheduled for the park was cancelled because of rain and the meeting was held at the Flury home. The club will decorate the chapel at Camp White June 14. Mrs. Otto Nagel will su pervise. -Members were .reminded that when dues are in, the an nual year book will be com piled. Mrs. Glen Clymer will be hostess for the next meeting, July 2. 4 Officers Named By Welcome. Club; Plan Breakfast Medford Welcome Wagon club recently elected officers for the coming year and made plans for a benefit event to raise funds for the children's department of the new Rogue Valley hospital, Mrs. Leland Raiich is the new president. Other officers are Mrs. Donald Pryor, vice president; Mrs. Thomas Ball, corresponding secretary; Mrs. John Mast, recording secre tary; Mrs. Gaylord Hay, treas urer. The fund-raising party will be a pancake breakfast Sun day, June 22, at Girls Com munity club. Hours will be from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. M;V ( j? k - Beef and preferably steak is ' the perfect choice to please Dad on Father's Day. Let the youngsters prepare a meal fit for the king of the family of steaks served "on a raft" of frozen potato patties. For the "Steaks on a Raft," select a boneless steak as filet mignon, boneless strip sirloin, rib steak or a big sirloin cut into individual servings before broil ing. For best eating, make cer tain that the steak is cut at least 1-inch thick. With a boneless steak, pound of meat per person should be adequate, but to really please Dad,- plan on a robust ) pound serving. Broil the steaks in a preheated broiler at least 3-inches from the source of heat to the perfect degree of doneness. The frozen potato patties come ready-shaped, requiring only a brushing of butter before slip ping into the broiler for a few minutes to brown. Steaks on a Raft 14 enrings) 4 (1 package) frozen potato pattiea Butter Onion salt (optional) 4 teaspoons sesame seeds 4 boneless steaks, cut 1-inch thick Butter potato patties. Sprinkle with onion salt. Sprinkle each patty with 1 teaspoon sesame seeds. Broil ac cording to package directions. Re move to platter and keep warm in oven. Broil steaks approximately 3-inches front heat source 5 minutes on each side for rare, 6 minutes for medium and 7 to 8 minutes for well done. Remove steaks, place each oa potato patty and serve. Couple to Wed In Rites Sunday The wedding of Miss Viola ! Willamette university; May Russell, Medford, to Thomas John Harrison, Cas cade Locks, Ore., is set for Sunday, June 15, in Highland Congregational church, Port land. - Miss Russell, student at Lewis and Clark college in Portland is in Medford at present with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Russell, -204 North Ivy street, and the fam ily will leave for Portland later this week. In the wedding party will be Miss Barbara Roach, Miss Alexa Hibbard and Miss Rus sell's sister, Diana, who will go north after college closes. Miss Roach is a student at Auxiliary Holds Recent Ceremony Shady Cove Mrs. Clarence Meyer was initiated at a meeting of Steelhead post and auxiliary June 6. Mrs. Jim Cassal reported on the recent buddy poppy sale, and thanked her co-chairmen. The auxiliary will hold a sewing session June 12 at the Post home. Any member in terested in making a uniform is asked to be present. ' Next meeting of the group will be June 20 at 7 p.m. Women attending are asked to wear old clothing and the kitchen will be cleaned. Serving refreshments for the last meeting were Mrs. Harry Bircii and Mrs; Albert Beutel. - " Bleu Cheese, Tomatoes Said Good With Steak New York (UPI) r-Bleu cheese and tomatoes combine for an unusual side dish for steak. To make four servings, mix s,i cup crumbled bleu cheese (about 4 ounces) with 2 table spoons fine dry bread crumbs. Cut four medium - sized tomatoes in half. Sprinkle to matoes with onion salt. Cut 1 small green pepper in thin strips and place a strip on each tomato half. Sprinkle with cheese mixture. Student Given Journal Plaque At Graduation : Charles Bray, son of Dr. J. P. Bray, Lozier lane, was hon ored during the 1958 gradua tion ceremonies of Oregon State college, held Monday at Corvallis. The young man, a member of the graduating class, was presented the Wall Street Journal plaque for "outstanding scholarship, citi zenship and leadership." Young Bray received a de gree in technology and busi ness management, and next fall plans to enter the Uni versity of Oregon law school. He was also honored recently by initiation into Phi Kappa Phi, national scholastic honor society, and was presented a pin in recognition of his ap pearance in several college dramatic productions. Young Bay will be em ployed during the summer in Red Bluff, Calif. Dr. Bray and his daughter, Mrs. Peggy Dixon, Ashland, attended the commencement ceremonies. Guests Here Mr. and Mrs. Donald H.
