Francis E. Walter (D-Tenn.), chairman of ie House Committee on Tin-American Activities. Walter charged in Washing ton Sunday that taton was trying "to usurp th$ powers of the state department" in recent contacts witn itussia. "Anju.man who loves his country would be concerned flith the danger of nfrlear war and would take steps to prevent it," the financier said. Betttr Understanding Eaton sponsored an inter national conference of scien tists in Canada last April to have "distinguished scholars from all parts of the world get a better understanding of each other's philosophy and thereby reduce the danger of nuclear war." Scientists from Russia and Communist China have at tended meetings sponsored by Eaton, of which that in April as the latest. Eaton said the conferences were similar, to the type now backed by President Eisen hower between scientists of nations with nuclear weapons. Walter called Eaton's activi ties almost an attempt to "en ter into negotiations with a foreign power." Plans To Visit Russia "I can't understand how ang citizen has this right," Walter said, after Eaton dis closed plans to visit Russia with his wife within the next four months to press his cam paign for "world peace." Walter said he planned to set a date "quickly" for ques tioning by his committee about Eaton's earlier charges that the FBI and other gov ernment security agencies are "snooping, informing and rrpenine ud on people." Accidents Claim Four Oregonians By United Press International Accidents claimed four lives in Oregon over the week end. three of them on highways and one by drown ing. Four-year-old Darlene Val lish, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Vallish, Salem, died in a Salem hospital late Sunday of injuries suffered earlier in the day when she fell from a car in Salem. A Troutdale woman, Wilda Jean Baker, 27, was killed when the car in which she was an occupant overturned .near the Sandy river.' Two other persons in the car were injured and hospitalized in Portland. They were Marga ret Tuel, 22, Portland and 23-year-old JoAnn Evelyn Bern hardt of Gresham. Both were listtd in "good" condition. John ?homas Davis, 68, War rtnton, was killed Saturday nit vhen the pickup truck ht was driving and a car col lided on Highway 101 east of Astoria. Capt.
