Eckel, Med ford, has been named com mander of the Air Force Re serve Officers Training Corps at Brigham Young university for the school year 1958-59, according to Col. Barnett S. Allen, chairman of the depart ment of air science. Cadet Eckel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul O. Eckel, is a junior majoring in marketing. He plays guard on the varsity football team. He assumed command of the cadet corps last week at a leadership training laboratory. The planet Venus, Earth's closest neighbor, perpetually veils its face beneath a sea of clouds. At intervals of about a year and a half, Venus draws close to Earth and be comes the evening star, bright enough to cast a shadow. MYSTERY Open Throughout The Year CLUB NEWS Griffin Creek Cooking Club Meeting was called to order June 3 by our president, Christine Helman. We all gave the pledge. Then after the business was adjourned we had our projects. One of our projects was about the proper storage of meats and how-to make hamburger pat ties and how to wrap sand wiches. :We also learned how to wash dishes correctly. Then the meeting was adjourned. .Karen Hugdahl, Reporter Motor Pool Will Consolidate Cars Salem (UPI) Passenger vehicles owned by the state in the Portland area will be sonsolidated into a motor pool July 1, State Finance Director John F. Richardson an nounced Saturday. The Portland motor pool was approved by the state legislature last year. Location of the pool is at South West Fourth and hall streets near the state office building. Storage, servicing and dispatching facilities for about 125 vehicles will be in cluded. Williams Named Association Head Salem (UPI) State High way Engineer W. C. Williams was elected president of the Western Association of State Highway Officials as the as sociation concluded Its week long annual conference at Salt Lake City Friday. Williams, who has served as secretary and vice-president of the association, presided this year over the general ses sion, during which the ex panded federal aid highway program was dicussed. The meeting was attended by Highway Commissioners Milo K. Mclver, Robert B. Chessman and Kenneth Frid ley. The human tear gland, lachrymal, is about the size of an almond. The Medical by Super-Voltage Rays Helpful In Cancer At a recent medical meet ing in Houston, Dr. Gilbert Fletcher reported that some of the new su p e r - voltage x - rays and other forms of radiation have been giving e x c ellent re- ' suits in the t r e atment of c e r tain can cers. In a se ries of 74 cases in which the patient had a cancer either in the back of his throat or r in his mouth, 70 per cent of the lumps were destroyed, whereas with the old type of treatment only 33 per cent were destroyed. Already, the two-year sur vival rate of patients has al most doubled. Quite a few patients with cancer of the bladder or with an inoperable cancer of the neck of the womb have been saved 'with the new powerful rays. Cholesterol in Arterial Disease . At Harvard, a team of doc tors has discovered a new and possibly very fruitful method of studying the influence of cholesterol and pther fat-like substances on arteries. They have grown cells from the human aorta (the large artery that comes out of the heart) in cultures, and then have modified these cultures by adding cholesterol to the nu trient medium. This choles terol did much harm. Then linolenic acid, such as is found in vegetable oils, was added, and the culture became al most normal - again. When stearic acid, which is found in animal fats, was added, there was a deposition of much fatty substance among the growing cells. The results of these experi ments tend to reinforce the clinical studies which indicate that unsaturated linolenic acid, added to a diet, tends This Sunday Before or After Church . . FCAVIN ; ; "Hilts Wendell Snooks, a senior at Yreka High school, was chosen student of the year by the Yreka Rotary club during a luncheon in the Yreka Inn. He was given an engraved wrist watch. Snooks won an award cer tificate in the National Merit Foundation scholarship exam ination earlier this year. He also was awarded the Bank of America certificate award in science. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Snooks. Mrs. Robert Ferguson was hostess to a Stanley party at her home Wednesday, May 28. Demonstrator was Mrs. Gwen Stockdale of Central Point. Dave Sage, Art Hartman and John Roseburg recently attended the game between the San Francisco Giants and Roundup Emeritus Consultant In Medicine, Mayo Clinic Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation to lower the amount of appar ently hurtful cholesterol in the blood. The only objection to the addition of liquid vegetable oils to the diet is that, recently, some observers have found that, after some weeks, the level of the blood cholesterol goes back up to where it was. Again, I must say, before we ' doctors pre scribe strict diets I suspect we had better wait until more research workers are in agree ment. KNOWLAND Senator Wil liam F. Knowland at press conference in Washington seems in a pensive mood fol lowing his set-back in the California gubernatorial race. His Democratic oppo nent, "Pat" Brown almost snowed the senator under in the primary. ' A The 1957-58 Argentine cot ton crop is estimated at 480, 000 bales. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Good win and daughters were week end guests of Goodwin's par ents in Cedarville. Art Crowley of Livermore is at his mine in the Beaver Creek area. His wife and fam ily expect to join him at the close of school. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Rose and family moved back to their home in Grenada, after resid ing here for several years. Robert Black, who is at tending Oregon State college, visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Black, and broth er, Larry, Memorial Day week end. Cheryl Smith who is a stu dent at Chico State college was a week end guest at the Dick Richman home in Scott valley. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. , Smith and family drove to the Richman home to visit their daughter. Mrs. Jake Lindner and daughter, Linda, accompanied by four schoolmates, stopped at the M. M. Silf home Tues day evening en route to their home in Mt. Shasta, after spending the day in Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Nick Free meyer drove to San Francisco last week to return their daughter, Mrs. Mark Bonner, who recently underwent ser ious brain surgery there, to her home in Red Bluff. Friends of Mrs. Bonner will be pleased to know that she is improved and well on the road to complete recovery. This correspondent wishes to correct a mistake made in this column in Tuesday's edi tion. It was stated that a layette shower was given for Mrs. S. Marin. It was given for Mrs. Italo Marin at Mrs. Shienier Marin's home. The Rosettos are former residents. Mrs. Carroll Davenport and daughter, Lynn, left recently by plane for Kentucky, where they . will visit relatives for several months. Mr. and Mrs. Henry De Clerck Jr. and children of Yreka were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Henry De Clerck Sr., on Sunday. Mr and Mrs. Vern Burns made a business trip to River side last Wednesday, return ing the first of the week. Miss Carol Garner of Klam ath river was an 'overnight guest of Miss Diane Ward. The girls had attended the baccalaureate services in, the Yreka High school gym. Jimmy Gibson of Dead In dian rd. was a guest of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ferguson, and son for several' days last week. Mr. and Mrs. Walt Lausta lot and sons went on a picnic at Crater lake on Memorial Day. . Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Span naus drove to the eastern part of the state on Friday where they were met at Ravendale by their son and daughter-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Span naus and family of Oroville. The group spent the time look ing for Indian arrowheads and other relics. Ministers Protest Stores Reopening Albany (UPI) Two local ministers protested the pros pective re-opening Sundays of two supermarkets, Foodtown and Safeway, here Friday. The Rev. William SheUhart and the Rev. William Brown said closing of stores on Sun day has met public approval and that most local merchants have declared the plan to be "very successful." The two ministers were challenging the statements that the Sunday closing ex periment was not working out in Linn county. The state ments were by store man agers. Gilchrist and daughter, Judy, stopped Friday evening at the Don Ward home, en route to Horn brook where they were the guests of Frank Ward. On Sunday they were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Robert De Voe and sons, Mrs. Clarice De Voe and Mr: and Mrs. L. A. McCul lough, all of Medford, and Mr. and Mrs. Don Ward and daughters for a barbecue din ner on the lawn at Mr. Ward's home. Mr. and Mrs.' Joe Fogiatto and daughter, Lena, made a business trip to Yreka Satur day. They then drove to Mon tague where they visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Rizzardo. Johnny Fogiatto, who has been a student in Chico State college, returned to his home Tuesday for the summer vacation. . It was brought to our atten tion that Mrs. Lucy Mendes was a guest on the Sheila Sherman Feminine Fancies TV show on April 30, where she displayed her needlework. This is Mrs. Mendes' hobby and she has many beautiful pieces. Appearing with her was her granddaughter, Pam ela Mendes. Another hobby called to our attention is the growing of iris at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Jones. They have 50 different varieties which were at their peak of blossom recently. Many friends drove to their home on Highway 99, south, to view the spectacular scene. ' ' With the presentation of re port' cards-the Hilts School closed at noon Thursday, May 29. Prior, to that, field trips were enjoyed by the various rooms, the trip made by the third and fourth grades ap pearing in an earlier column. On May 15 the fifth and sixth grades and teacher, Mrs. L. E. Jeter, traveled to Med ford where they visited at the Tucker Sno-Cat plant, Harry and David Bear Creek Pack ing Plant, and Beck's Bakery. A rest period was spent in Hawthorne park after which they all enjoyed lunch at the "Clock." Mothers taking cars were: Mrs. Robert Fremd, Mrs. Al Simmen and Mrs. Robert CANDLE ROOM . On May 21, the first and second grades and teacher, Mrs. Alec Rutledge, spent the day at the S. S. Bar Ranch northwest of town. Mrs. Vern Burns served punch, to the children and coffee io the adults to go with their sack lunches. The group toured the ranch buildings and were able to see the livestock at close range, always an interesting sight to boys and girls. . Mothers going were Mrs. Les Chase, Mrs. Lome Martin, Mrs. John Brannon, Mrs. Rob ert Fremd. Mrs: John Green and Mrs. Vic Van de Weghe. The seventh and eighth grades visited Yreka"5 High school on May 22 to become acquainted with a school so much larger than theirs. On May 23, at the close of school they enjoyed a picnic in Lithia Park, then swimming at Twin Plunges. They then drove to Medford to attend a show at the Craterian theater. Transportation was by school bus, driven by their teacher, Mario Michelon. On May 26, this group took a tour of the woods and log ging operations. Resident manager Mel Barron, Don Fremd, Dave Sage, and Mario Michelon transported the group by car. On May 27, they were taken on a conduct ed tour of the mill and other plant installations, where they saw how the logs are processed after arrival from the woods. Explaining the various phases and answering questions were Mel Barron, William Tollis, and W. A. Buckhorn Mineral Springs Ashland, Ore. A surprise birthday dinner for Mrs. Jim Cain was held on the lawn at the Vic Van de Weghe home on May, 17.
