California Yet To Settle Race for Attorney General San Francisco (UPI) A close four-way contest for at torney general was the only race left to be settled after Tuesday's primary election. Assemblyman Caspar W. Weinberger of San Francpco held an eyelash lead ,over Congressman Patrick J.' Hil lings for the GOP nomination as the count of bftllots . re sumed this morning. State Sen. Robert I. McCarthy had a precarious edge over Judge Stanley Mosk of Los Angeles for the Democratic nomina tion. , The 'ultimate winners ap peared to be Mosk nd Hil lings. The reason lay in the fact that the lion's share of votes yet to be counted was in Los Angeles county, home area of both Mosk and Hillings. And in Los Angeles county, they were running fir thead of their opponents with thous ands of precincts yet to be counted. Facts and Tigurts This was the pictur the count resumed: Democratic, 17,771 pre cincts out of 2 6,3 3: McCar thy 634,270, Mos 633.W9; Republican 1.7,718 precinct Weinberger 337,182, Hillings 335,919. ' x Brown's Vt Larjt While the battle raged to see -who would make the No vember finals in the Attorney General's race, Attorney Ed mund G. (Pat) Brown con tinued to pile up an eye-opening total vote lead over U.S. Sen. William F. Knowland (A) in their "popularity contest" prior to a winner-take-all run off Nov. 4. Starting off the final un official count of votes, this is how it stood: 18,156 precincts: Republican Knowland 821, 832, Brown 280,452; Demo c r a t i c Knowland 204,621, Brown 1,258,542. Brown's combined vote was 1,538,994 at the start of Thursday's count, Knowland's only 1, 026,453. Thus, Brown had a 512,451 bulge far more than even his most optimistic sup porters expected.
