Ja , 5 Special Workshop Set af SOC (During Summer Months Ashland College ummt session studentshave the op portunitpof iSkmgDa special language-arts workshop from Miss Marian Zollinger, super visor of language-arts in the Portland school system, Dr. Bill Sampson. Southern Ore gon college summer sessions director, announced. Beginning June" 16, the two week workshop is available to both elementary and sec ondary teachers, and will cov er problems and methods in selecting and organizing ma terials for teaching in the sub ject field. To help prospective enrollees in planning their schedules, Dr. Sampson direct ed attention to the change in the dates as tJBp workshop was originally scheduled for July 14-25 Dr. Sampson explained that emphasis for graduate stu dents would be placed upon recent research and literature dealing with instructional ma terials, methods, and facilities, including the completion of a special project. Marts June 9 o Though registration for the regular session does not take place until Monday, June 16, it was pointed out that the workshop in slanguage arts would begin June 9 and con- O elude June 20. Those inter ested are asked to contact the registrar as soon as possible Other workshops, begin ning with one for the period June 16-27 on methods and research procedures in arith metic running concurrently with Miss Zollinger's, include: two in methods and research (Materials, one in art, the oth er in science, June 30-July 11; the music clinic and camp, July 7-18; curriculum mater ials seminar, and individual studies, and diagnostic and remedial instruction in read ing, July 28-Aug. 8; and two post session workshops ind methods and research mater ials for social studies and mu sic scheduled for Aug. 11-22. As in past years, all basic courses for master of science in elementary education in addition to the new fifth year t program for a master of sci ence 6fcree in secondary edu cation will be offered for the o O Ho Bargaining , Progress Reported By Auto Union Detroit (UPI) The United Auto Workers today scheduled negotiating sessions with General Motors, Ford, Chrysler and American Mo tors, but there was no bar gaining progress to report. After meetings at "General Motors and Ford Wednesday the first since contracts ex pired last week end re liable sources told United Press International the par ties were as far apart as ever. No Labor Trouble Te half-million auto work ers at General Motors, 'Ford and Chrysler worked their third day without a union contract Wednesday and no incidents of labor trouble were reported. The GM "con tract expired last Thursday, the Ford and Chrysler con tracts expired Sunday. ' The UAW reported its members supporting the un ion's determination to work without a contract until the companies will agree to bet ter unemployment benefits, pensions and job security pro tection. The UAW is not strik ing because the companies have a surp&s of unsold new Ocars. Extension Agreed American Motors and the UAW have agreed to extend rtheiP contract if it expires on June 15 without a new settle ment. A number ? ntw courses have been dS3 to the program. Wee Course One of the new courses, a seminar, "Shakespeare in the Schools," has rarely been taught in any other college in the country. The course af fords an opportunity to re familiarize teachers with the plays usually taught in high school and to develop ways and means of presenting them in a vivid manner. Dr. Samp son explained. Instructor for the course will be Angus Bowmer, founder and director of the Oregon Shakespearean Festival conducted each year in Ashland during August. To compliment the usual col lege courees, numerous social functions also are being plan ned including traditional cul tural and faculty hours to be held weekly in the new Britt Stdent center. Other activities will feature . week end trips to scenic places in southern Oregon, a variety of assembly programs, and many other ac tivities. To obtain a summer session schedule, Dr. Sampson asked that those interested write to the registrar, Southern Ore gon college, as soon as possible. Portland Seniors Win Mud Tug o' War Portland (UPI) There was some mud slinging here Wednesday, but it wasn't in an election campaign. The juniors and the seniors of Washington high school took part in their Mud Tug O'War. The seniors won by dragging the juniors through a big puddle which had been muddied in advance. But it didn't end there. The losers began smearing the winners. Soon just about everybody was muddy, in cluding a few sophomores who joined in. The fracas finally ended when mud made it about im possible to tell juniors from seniors. Portland Policeman Guilty of Burglary Portland .(UPI) A jury Wednesday found War ren L. Moore, 33, West Linn, La former Portland policeman, guuty ot burglary. Sentenc ing was set for next Monday. Moore was one of three Portland policemen arrested in connection with the bur glary of Nordics ' Appliance store Feb. 22. The other two have pleaded guilty and re ceived 18-month prison terms. ' The ship was scheduled to leave later in the day for jannes, France, where Tru man and his group plan to disembark. Truman is accompanied by his wife and by Judge and Mrs. Samuel Rosenman. Cover Spray Given For Moth Control Second cover spray for con trol of codling moth, psylla and mites on pears should be completed by June 12, accord ing to' C. B. Cordy, county horticultural agent. In speed sprayers, 8 pounds of 50 per cent DDT plus 3 pounds of 50 per cent Diel drin plus 8 pounds of Kel thane or 8 pounds of Aramite per acre should be used. Kel thane should be used on Co rn ise. In hose rigs, IV2 pounds of DDT plus a half pound of 50 per cent Dieldrin plus IV2 pounds of Kelthane or Ara mite per 100 gallons should be used. On apples, 12 pounds of 50 per cent DDT per acre or 2 pounds per 100 gallons is rec dVnmended. If aphis are pres ent add 6 pounds parathion per acre or 1 pound per 100. This will also control leaf miner. Add VA to 2Vi ounces X-77 spreader per 100 gallons, Cor dy advised. Rivers-Harbors Approval Expected Washington (UPI) Sen. Arthur V. Watkins (R-Utah) believes Congress soon will pass a compromise rivers and harbors bill acceptable to President Eisenhower. Everything now points to- this compromise measure, he told a Senate Public Works Subcommittee Wednesday. ' " The group is trying to ham mer out a new bill that would meet objections Eisenhower raised when he vetoed the ori ginal measure earlier this year. Watkins said the President probably wcmld favor the re vised bill because many "questionable projects . of the earlier one have been "pruned out?" But Robert E.
