o O o 9 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Of gon, Wtdntsday, Miy 28, 1958 I Quotes From the News By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Paris Premier Pierre Pflimlin, following his resignation s head of the French government: "Until a new cabinet is formed, I shall keep my full pow ers in the government and its responsibilities." Washington Rep. Walter Rogers (D.-Tex.) who offered the sudden death amendment to kill the Alaska statehood bill: "I haven't heard one good argument in favor of statehood yet. If we bring Alaska into the union we would be going beyond the point of no return. There would be no end to how many territories we would be adding to the Union." The Family Editor's note: The Family Council consists of a Judge, a psychiatrist, three clergymen, a newspaper editor, a women's editor and two writers. Each article is a summary of an actual report. The Family Council does not give advice; it merely reports on problems that have been dealt wim oy responsible agencies and coimi;or. Martha K. My mother-in-law makes cutting remarks. Daniel K. Martha takes it in the wrong spirit. Martha K. My husband and I are in our mid-20's and have been married three years. We have no children yet, but hope to have soon. My problem is my mother-in-law. She is very nasty to me and makes terribly cut ting remarks. She always re minds me that when she was my age she had four children. She suggests that something is wrong with 'me although she knows that I have seen a good doctor, who assures me that I am well able to have a child. When I told my husband about these remarks of his mother's, he said I was being silly. I think he, ought to tell her to mind her own busi ness about these things. Daniel K. It's a s tr a n g e thing, but my mother has never made any of these so called "nasty" remarks in ray presence. I don't mean to sug gest Martha isn't telling the truth. I Just mean she exag gerates and puts a wrong em phasis on some of Mother's remarks. My mother is a very de voted woman. She is concern ed about my happiness and maybe she sometimes goes too far in her solicitude. But feel anything she says should be taken in the spirit in which il is intended. It seems to me Martha is be ing -very oversensitive. My family has always been nice Oregon Delegates Schedule Meeting Salem A meeting of the 55 delegates from Oregon who attended the western re gional conference of the Pres ident's Committee for Traffic Safety recently in San Fran cisco, has been called for Thursday, May 29, in Salem F. A. Dresslar, president of the Highway Lifesavers com mittee of Oregon Citizens, Inc., called the meeting at the suggestion of Gov. Robert D. Holmes and members of the Oregon Traffic Safety com mission. The purpose of the meeting, Dresslar said, is to activate the program approved at the San Francisco conference for the reduction of fatal high way accidents, and personal injuries and property dam age resulting from traffic mis haps. The session will be held in the board of control room at the state house, starting at 10 a.m. Jim Flora Heads SOC Fraternity Ashland Jim Flora, Ash land, was elected president of Theta Delta Phi, men's schol astic honorary fraternity at Southern Oregon college. The Council: We agree that it is rather "strange" that Daniel's mother has made these personal remarks when Daniel was out of the room It is possible that Martha ex aggerated or put a wrong em phasis on the remarks. But the remarks should not have been made at all. If they hadn't been made, there would have been no possibil ity of a wrong interpretation. We do no agree that Martha is "oversensitive. The issue is a personal one and Martha feels somewhat vulnerable since her desire for a child has not yet been fulfilled. Ordinary courtesy calls for silence on the part of outsiders. It would be wise and kind of Daniel to discuss the ques tion with his mother and to tell her such remarks hurt his wife. He should ask her in a nice way to refrain from making them. If Daniel doesn't do this, or if his mother persists in mak ing such comments, we would suggest that Martha tell her mother-in-law to say whatever she has to say on the subject to Daniel. After that, she should try, to develop a deaf ear to her mother-in-law if the matter ever comes up again. We doubt if it will. (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.)
