; Denial Given On 1 Monopoly Charge Against UP, INS Washington (UPI) L,yle C. Wilson, vice president and Washington manager of United Press International has denied a senator's charge that onsolidation of two major vire services could confront small newspapers and radio stations with "an absolute monopoly" ' of national news. In a letter to Sen.' Estes Kefauver (D-Tenn.), Wilson aid Kefauver's statements of the comaetitive situation in the press association' field were inaccurate and mis leading." Wilson said creation of Un ited Press International would intensify rather than reduce competition in the press as sociation field because it now "challenges a strong compet itor (Associated Press) with physical facilities and human resources which are more nearly equal than ever be fore." Addressed Senate Kefauver, chairman of the senate anti-monopoly subcom mittee, criticized the consoli dation of United Press and International News Service into the new United Press In ternational, tie am so in a senate speech Tuesday and in a letter to Victor A. Han sen, assistant attorney gen eral in charge of the Justice department's anti-trust divi sion. Kefauver urged Hansen to "eriously consider" seeking a preliminary court injunc tion against the consolida tion. Attorney General William P. Rogers said he expected a ttcision within a few days 9 to whether the department Vould act in the matter. Tons of Silver found in Cache Houston, Tex. (UPI) Eight tons of silver dollars have been found in a base ment cache of a late million aire who liked to play police man in a radio - equipped Cadillac. The cache belonged to James M. (Silver Dollar Jim) West, who died Dec. 18. Its exact value was not revealed, hut it " was believed to be ejround $270,000. West, who liked to hand ut silver dollars to friends And acquaintances, spent aiost of his spare time riding .pound with law enforcement Wficers. He maintained a fleet of radio-equipped Cadil lacs in which he patrolled Kouston streets at night. The Houston Press said persons knowing about the cache reported it was discov ered Friday but did not make disclosure until Tuesday The Press said the dollars re transferred to a bank in armored cars and tellers Vorked over the week end trying to stack the coins. Three Pilots Die In Jet Collision Clovis, N. M. (UPI) - Three Air Force pilots were killed Tuesday when two jf ts collided as both approached Cannon Air Force base for landings. One jet was attempting an emergency landing because of radio failure. Both planes aere approaching under vis ual flight rules. They collided at low alti tude, and fell to the ground almost as one piece of wreck age, and burned. Air Force officials identi Jfied the victims as Capt. Wil liam R. Gilmore, 30, of Inter .Jaken, N.Y., 1st Lt. Leslie T. Ikeda, 28, of Honolulu, Ha araii, and 1st Lt. William B. Jarman, 24, a 1956 U.S. Mili tary academy graduate from North Arlington, Va.
