Denial Given On 1
Monopoly Charge
Against UP, INS
Washington (UPI)
L,yle C. Wilson, vice president
and Washington manager of
United Press International has
denied a senator's charge that
onsolidation of two major
vire services could confront
small newspapers and radio
stations with "an absolute
monopoly" ' of national news.
In a letter to Sen.' Estes
Kefauver (D-Tenn.), Wilson
aid Kefauver's statements of
the comaetitive situation in
the press association' field
were inaccurate and mis
leading."
Wilson said creation of Un
ited Press International would
intensify rather than reduce
competition in the press as
sociation field because it now
"challenges a strong compet
itor (Associated Press) with
physical facilities and human
resources which are more
nearly equal than ever be
fore."
Addressed Senate
Kefauver, chairman of the
senate anti-monopoly subcom
mittee, criticized the consoli
dation of United Press and
International News Service
into the new United Press In
ternational, tie am so in a
senate speech Tuesday and
in a letter to Victor A. Han
sen, assistant attorney gen
eral in charge of the Justice
department's anti-trust divi
sion. Kefauver urged Hansen to
"eriously consider" seeking
a preliminary court injunc
tion against the consolida
tion. Attorney General William
P. Rogers said he expected a
ttcision within a few days
9 to whether the department
Vould act in the matter.
