Their lo cal doctors . cannot promise much, so now they wonder if there is any place to which they can take their relative any place where they can get the last word, and possibly, a trial of some new medicine that has ju-1 been discovered. As these people say, they want to feel that they are do ing everything that is human ly possible. Certainly, these people can get the last word in the 4 Id- famous Memorial Center for Cancer and Allied Diseases, in New York City. Next door to it is the great Sloan-Ketter- ing Institute for Cancer Re search. In such a huge place there are many men who spe cialize in the care of the sev eral types of cancer. For in stance the last time I visited at the Memorial Center, I wanted to see if they had anything new and hopeful for a young doctor friend of mine who had Hodgkin's dis ease. Dr. Rhoads, the direc tor, referred me to a young physician who was spending all his time treating patients with this disease, and he, of course, was able in a few min utes to give me the latest in formation about the new drugs that he was trying out. When there are such won derful cancer institutes scat tered throughout the country, staffed with highly-skilled ex perts, there is absolutely no sense in taking the patient to a quack who, in most cases, ' never saw the inside of a med ical school, and whose only skill is in fleecing each pati ent out of several hundred dollars, cash down in ad vance Suggestive Persons Since the beginning of time, those who have treated the sick have known that there is a certain type of sug gestible person who will im prove greatly and even lose his pain when given a placebo a sugar pill containing no medicine. In recent years a number of physicians have studied this phenomenon, per haps giving an empty ,pill (placebo) to 100 persons com plaining of pain or some other symptom. In one such study, 42 per cent of the persons who received a hypodermic injection of plain water re ported that their pain had been relieved. In another study, 69 per cent said they had gotten re lief. There were only 31 hard- headed persons in the hun dred who never reacted to a placebo, while there were 14 who were always satisfied with one. The others some times reacted favorably and sometimes did not. As one might have expected, those who always got relief were overly nervous and emotional, Portland Dam Work Halted by Storm Portland (UPD Work on ane arth-fill dam of the Port land water bureau on the north fork of the Bull Run river has been halted by light ning storms in the Cascades. The presence of this group in the community has always made it hard for us physi cians to appraise the value of a new medicine. Some few drugs are so wonderful that there never can be any doubt about their efficacy, but oth ers help only an occasional patient, and then we doctors must try to find out if they are helping only those 40 per cent who are inclined to de ceive themselves and us. Incidentally, the presence of these people in the world, plus the fact that many dis eases ease .up or, every so often, allow the patient to re cover all by himself, accounts for the fact that we doctors can't get excited when some one tells us of the turpentine or honey or lime-juice that cured his rheumatism. One case means nothing. Lymphedema No matter how often I write about lymphedema I get a pile of letters from young women asking what they can do for a big leg or two big legs. Unfortunately, I cannot say much that is cheering. The enlargement is due to a plugging-up of the tiny ves sels which carry, lymph a fluid that runs through the tissues of our body and bathes our cells. I suspect that in the cases of some of the women, the lymph vessels were not properly formed at birth. I know of no medicine for the condition. Surgeons can remove the thick layer of tis sue from under the skin, but few I have talked to had any great desire to try the oper ation. Recently, I read of an operation that seemed 'logical for some cases. In it the sur geon transplants a segment of normal skin from the pati ent's own body with the fat under it, and uses it as a bridge across which the dammed-up lymph can flow perhaps across the groin. Some women tell me they had varicose veins cut out but that did not help. The patient ought not to get fat; that can only make her worse. The woman might try sleeping at night with the lower part of the mattress elevated by put ting under it a big cushion out of a chair, or a bolster. By morning the leg might well be smaller. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diagr nose by mail.
