6A Mendiy, May 19, 1958 MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. Family Council Mrs. D. R. Matilda's hus band has turned her against us. Malhilda F. That's ridicu lous he just isn't interested in them. Mrs. D. R, I am deeply hurt about the way my daugh ter, Mathilda, has treated me since her recent marriage. I have always done the very best for her, giving her more than we could really afford because I wanted her to have more advantages than I did. She never showed any grati tude and was an irritable girl and often threw temper tan trums. I thought she would change when she got married, but her husband has been a bad influ ence. I don't think he likes us. I had hoped Mathilda and I would be drawn closer to gether after her marriage, but now she seems never to want to see her father or me. I beg hr not to let her husband in fluence her against us. Mathilda F. Mother keeps harping on one thing that John has turned me against my family. That is ridiculous. He just isn't interested in my family. Mother seems to think she And Dad are supposed to be our best friends,"but we would rather be among couples our own age. Mother has always gotten on my nerves in a lot of little ways and Dad was al ways drawn into his shell. He never did have anything much to talk about. Frankly, I had looked for ward to marriage as a way of getting away from my par ents. Don't get me wrong. I love my husband, but I was never happy at home and it means so much to me to have my own place in the world without my parents. Th Council Mathilda's feelings are somewhat natural but very childish. Her par ents may have to sit tight until she becomes a little more mature. , At one time or another, most children develop a feel ing of resentment, a sense of being shut out of their par ents' lives in a very essential way. As they mature, they recognize the realities of the situation that they are chil dren and they are loved dear ly, but they cannot become a part of their parent's most in timate existence. In a healthy relationship, they accept this and look forward to finding tAir own mate. 8om persons never get vp this childish anger at hiint shut out and find vari ous reasons to prove to them selves that they have, in some ay, been cheated by their ytrents. Mathilda seems to be ne of those individuals. Mrs. D. R. should recognize Carriage rarely alienates a ehild who does not already feel alienated. If Mathilda felt a close, warm relationship vith her parents, she would jsull her husband into this erbit. Mathilda now is using r husband to shut her par ents out of her life, as she nee felt shut out. Mrs. D. R.'s criticism om Mathilda's hus tnd will only widen the ftreach. She should recognize 9 is not the responsible Sarty. Mathilda must try to under stand her parents never de nied her her "own place in the world."
