The Medical Diet for Hardening of the Arteries In release No. 53 by the American Heart Association there is something which will sadden the hearts ofall those many men who today are drinking with their meals a little glass of vegetable oil. What is dis appointing is that it has been found that, although at first the oil can lower the Jevel of blood Dr. Alvarez cholesterol and even the num ber of the giant fat molecules in the blood, after six weeks or three months, the blood goes back , to the way it was, even though the use of the oil is continued. This report points up what I have been saying all along that there is not much sense in our pre scribing very narrow and markedly fat-free diets until we physicians know muiti more than we now know. just read a book by an Eng lish physician who says the great increase, of late, in heart attacks correlates best with the tremendous increase in our use of sugar! If We Are to Survive We Must Use Our Best Brains There is an interesting ar ticle by Evelyn Lauter in Family Weekly Magazine on unusually gifted children. am glad to see that a National Council has now been estab lished for the gifted, a coun cil which will sponsor re search, and will advise par ents in the education of bril liant students. The central of fice will be in West Orange, N.J. It will be a clearing house for information for the whole country. Miss Lauter says the idea was conceived by George Douglas Hofe, own er of the Carteret School for Boys, who has endowed the council. With Dr. Cyril Wool- cock, principal of Hunter Col lege High school, and profes sor of education at Hunter college as its chief consultant, the council plans to help school teachers to identify gifted children early enough so that special programs can be developed for them. Al ready in New York City, three-year-olds in nursery schools are being tested for unusual ability. . The council will help par ents to better understand their brilliant children and their needs. Parents of very able students at Hunter High school must attend three study sessions each year so that they can do a better job of help ing their' children. They are advised to guard the children against too much work ..out side of school hours, such as dancing lessons, music lessons and special language lessons. can see the need for this be cause every so often a very bright lad, on going to college, will edit the college paper, he will be chairman of a half dozen committees, and he soon will be running every thing. As a result, he some times winds up with poor, marks and a spell of fatigue neurosis. In the new schools now be ing planned for brilliant chil dren, the course will be ad justed to their needs so that they will not be bored, and will not have to be held back. Parents are advised to sur round their children with the books they love, and which they will read rapidly. Par ents should take the children on walks and try to interpret things' for them. I know that when my children were young I felt it incumbent on me to try to find good answers to their many questions. Often, when I could not answer a question, the child and I would stop what we were doing and would go to the encyclopedia for help. Should Appreciate Value I hope that the time is com ing when people will not so often sneer at the brilliant youngsters and call them "egg heads" or "squares." At last we adults should be appreci ating the great potential val ue of these children to the nation. They constitute our greatest source of f u t u re wealth. As I was writjng this, I heard that s6me teacher has been protesting against the new plans for helping bril liant children. He thought this un-American; he thought there should be no discrimi nation, and hence only one school for everyone. There, I fear, he slipped up, because when one tries to teach a bril liant child in the same class with a number of mentally re tarded children, the brilliant child may not get much of a break. The unfortunate teach er has to spend so much of her time helping the children who find it very hard to learn that she may have to ignore the brilliant child. For this, her conscience does not hurt her because she knows he can get his lesson in a few min utes all by himself. But then, because of his boredom, he may get into mischief, or he may -get to day-dreaming, and as a result, he may be sent home with a note to his moth er saying that he is lazy and bad. Many cases are on rec ord in which, because a bril liant child was bored in school and wouldn't study the unin teresting lessons set for him, he was classified as backward! Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail. Hoover said in a statement Thursday ,,that "Congress passed the first act providing for the unification ... of the armed services in July, 1947, after prolonged investigation and debate." Since 'that time Congress has acted further toward 'better unification and im provement of the services," Hoover said. ' One tommon Durnose of all these riroposals was better unification and a firmer civil ian control of the armed serv ices.
