Russell, president of the Southern Pacific Co., told an annual stockholders meeting Wednesday that Am erican business is threatened -by foreign competition and the continuing wage spiral. Regarding foreign compe tition, Russell cited the case of iron ore from a mine own ed by the company in Ne vada. He said the ore is ship ped to Japan where it goes into steel which is made into steel products and shipped back to America. In spite of transportation twice across the Pacific Ocean, the Japan ese can compete with Ameri can steel products, he added. Cost of Living Boost He cited as an example of wage increases in a period of poor business the fact that certain employees of South ern Pacific recently got a cost of living boost of four cents an hour. Russell said that if these conditions continue, "We're going to price ourselves out of business or be run out by f oreigiv competition." Russell said April earnings for the company would amount to 40 cents a share. The first quarter earnings amounted to $1.33 a share. Prospects Good He said prospects for long range growth of the company are good but no immediate pickup is expected. He .re ported a decline of 11.9 per cent in carloadings in the first quarter of this year. Russell said 1958 storms al ready have cost the company $4,800,000, before taxes. Fif teen directors were elected, including one new one Mal colm Pratt Aldrich, president of the Commonwealth Fund, New York City, who succeed ed retiring Landon K. Thome of New York. A proposal by. Lewis Gil bert to hold regional meet ings of stockholders was defeated. Tourists Should Rent Cars inU.S; Chicago (IP) Americans planning to rent a car in Eli rope should make arrange ments in this country, if they want to avoid time and trou ble, according to Joseph J. Stedem, executive of a car renting firm (Hertz). He said the best plan is to make reservations for a car when reservations are made for steamship or airline. "More than three million Americans are planning to visit Europe this summer, and this could create a problem in the car rental business if res ervations are not made," Sted em said. Stedem advised tourists to drive the car most common to the country being visited. "Although most American cars are available, the smaller European car is more satis factory," he said. "They are engineered to meet the de mands of the terrain, and they don't consume as much gaso line an expensive item overseas."
