Linkletter Blasts British Television For Cutting Program By TKKNON SCOTT Unifei V ess Correspondent Holywood tn Art Link letter blasted England's BBC television station today for rudely cutting him off the air during a guest appearance on an interview program. Just returned from a trip to Brussels to visit the fair LinHletter stopped by Lon don at the request of his pub lishers to plug his book. But the British unplugged the show before the American em cee could open his mouth. 'It was the shabbiest thing to happen to me in all my years in broadcasting," Link complained. "There was no ex cuse for it. "While I was in Brussels my publisher, Prentice-Hall, asked me to appear on a show titled 'Tonight.' I was sup posed to tell the audience about my years of interview ing children on the aid.' Wanted a Plug "Then I was to give a few plugs for my book, 'Kids Say the Darndest Things' which goes on sale over there in two months and return home. "Well, I had my people here in Hollywood edit a special film clip from my 'House Party' show and fly it over there. And I made a special trip to London for the'appear ance. All of this, mind you, was at my own expense." Linkletter said the BBC people were courteous to him before air time, but rriade no mention of their abhorrence of commercials. "When we went on the air the emcee, a guy named Der ek Hart, took my book away from me, and held it on his lap," Linkletter went on. 'And then he launched a se ries of pointed questions wanting to know if the film clip was better than my av erage show. "I told him, 'Yes, it is. I wanted it to be as good as Dossible.' "Then he asked what Amer ican parents thought about my attempts to 'exploit' their children. I told him 'exploit was the wrong word, and that I hadn't any complaints in the 12 years I'd been interview ing kids. Book Mot Mentioned "When time began to run out, I realized we hadn't men tioned the book. So I leaned over to pick it up, saying, 'I'd like to tell you about my book about children.' "He acted as if I'd commit ted a crime. Hart snatched the book away and shouted, 'Oh, no you don't. That sort of thing is for the other channel' meaning the commercial station they have over there. And with that they cut the program off the air for a mu sical interlude. "When we were off the air I asked the character why he thought I'd agreed to appear on the show in the first place. But he didn't have an answer. I was so mad I didn't know what to do, except grab my book and stomp out of there. "I'll never go back," Art said with finality, "and neith er will a lot of other stars who have had the same kind of treatment from the strait laced BBC." The institute engages in in tercollegiate athletics primar ily because its students want to. The program probably is the ultimate in "de-emphasized" sports. There are no huge crowds, no expensive stadium, but plenty of enthu siasm. Most of the effort that keeps the program going comes from Bernard Weiss- man, athletic director, who has been with IIT 30 years, and his staff of coaches and physical education instruc tors. Weissman's policy is to pro vide a well-rounded program that gives the student what he wants in recreation. IIT supports varsity teams with better than .500 records in baseball, basketball, swim ming, track, golf, wrestling, boxing and rifle competition. An athlete who enrolls in Illinois Tech does, so because he wants to be a scientist or an engineer, not because he wants to play a game. Valley Student Is Named to OSC Group Corvallis Donn R. John son of Central Point has been elected to the sttident senate for 1958-59 at Oregon State college. The senate is the student government body on campus. It is composed of 30 students, elected from various schools and Jieaded by the student body president. Johnson was elected to rep resent the school of agricul ture. He is a sophomore this year. He is the son of Mrs. Helen M. Johnson of Central Point. Railroad Trestle Burns in Eagle Point A short length of railroad trestle over an irrigation ditch near Eagle Point was re ported burned , some time Tuesday night, state police said this morning. " However, the trestle, be longing to Medford Corpora tion, was soon repaired and a logging train used it today, according to B. L. (Bud) Nut ting, company manager. He said the fire was probably started by somebody careless ly flipping a match or lighted cigarette. Julius Caesar was assassi nated in 44 B.C. Sanitary Sewer Is Authorized in CP Central Point The Central Point city council Monday evening approved the con struction of a sanitary sewer in' the southern part of the city. The sewer will start at West MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford. Oregon, Thursday, May T5, 1959 A Pine st. and Amy st. and con tinue on West Pine st. to Glen Way. It will travel south on Glen Way to the city limits. City officials said that the sewer was to be a trunk line on Pine and a lateral the rest of the way.
