Currently, he is overseeing the restoration of Wayside Inn, Sudbury, Mass. The inn, made famous by the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfel low, was built in the 1680's. It first was restored by the late Henry Ford, but was par tially destroyed by fire in De cember, 1956. The Ford Foundation grant ed $500,000 for the rebuild ing, and the inn is scheduled to reopen June 7. "We had all sorts of offers of gifts," said Carpenter, "maple tables, ' four poster beds, highboys and other New England furniture. We also got a lot of offers of Victor ian, but it doesn't fit the inn." Make Two Concessions "We've made only two con cessions to today's travelers. The plumbing is strictly 1958, and we've put twin beds in most of the rooms!" The National Trust was formed to help save and main tain historic homes or other buildings not protected by na tional or state governments, or other private groups. "We have 3,000 to 4,000 in dividual members," said Car- ipenter, "plus a whole batch of societies. We really got going when the Mellon Foun dation last October gave us two and a half million dol lars." Carpenter's interest in New England history comes natur ally. He was born in Rhode Island and has lived in Massa chusetts and Connecticut most of his life! At present, he and his wife he married a girl from Alabama reside in su burban Scarsdale in a clapboard-covered house filled with antiques. A Venus-fly-trap is a nerv ous little flower which lures insects toward its brightly colored petals. When one touches it, the trap closes. Many people are sensitive plants which close up when something which they fear, dread, or do not understand, approaches them. - These are the so-called over-sensitive in dividuals who, are unable or unwilling to maintain a ma ture perspective upon reali ties. With some people, this sen sitivity is the result of an insecure childhood. With oth ers, it seems to be the residue of unfortunate growth experi ences along the way jn adoles cence or even maturity. But whatever the origin, the remedy seems to lie in health ful reassurance, some person ality reorientation, and in the individual's own effort to ac quire "emotional callouses." "I don't want to be a cry baby," wails Joan. "I don't like to think other people are talking about me, or to be hurt as casual remarks. How can I become more hard boiled?" Here at the American Insti tute of Family Relations we see many couples who bicker because the wife is over-sensitive and on the defensive. Then there are men who be come moody because they have overheard the boss say something which they are sure indicates displeasure with them, and Women who sink into the 'blues' when their husbands forget a birth day or an anniversary. Over - sensitive folk can often help themselves by self-study. Try this: 1. Evaluate your sensitivity objectively: do you have a real basis for your emotion? Isolate it. Health Workers Attend Session Jackson county Tuberculos is and Health association is represented at the annual Oregon Tuberculosis and Health association by a group of five workers. Included are Mrs. Helen Tweedy, execu tive director for the Jackson county association; Miss Mary Ellen Bell and Mrs. Nancy Martin, health department nurses; Mrs. Henry Padgham, a- former president of the county association, and Mrs. Ted' Schoenemann, chairman of the Gold Hill Health unit. The annual meeting of the state group opened yesterday in Portland and closes today. Dr. Wendall Van Loan, presi dent of the state association, is presiding and the keynote speaker was Dr. James Weir, chief of pulmonary disease section of Fitzsimmons Army General hospital in Denver, Colo. His topic was "the tuber culin test and the chest x-ray in the detection programs." Correcting widely held mis conceptions about the magni tude and seriousness of tuber culosis Is the principal prob lem under discussion, reports say.
