Spafiin Hurls 230iEi Victory (LM Career; 6th This Season By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer While they're dusting off that Hall of Fame plaque for Stan Musial they might just as well start getting another ready for Warren Spahn. A "young fella," some seven months younger than the mighty "Man" from St. Louis, Spahn reached another milestone in his career Wednesday night when he pitched the Milwaukee Braves to a 4-1 victory over the Phil adelphia Phillies. It was Spahn's 230th win a total surpassed by only three left handers in modern National league history. . Of more immediate interest to the Braves, of course, was the fact that they reclaimed first place when the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Fran cisco Giants, 3-2. Musial, who apparently found his first 3,000 hits the hardest, got a jump on his fourth thousand by hitting a homer and two singles that lifted his average back to .500. Pirates Win The- Pittsburgh Pirates achieved their second six game winning streak of the season when they beat the Cincinnati Redlegs, 5-4, and the Chicago Cubs snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 7-3 decision over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the other National league games. In the American league, the New York Yankees got some more of that magnificent pitching to beat the Baltimore Orioles. 1-0. the Chicago White Sox downed the Kan sas City Athletics, 4-1, the Boston Red Sox topped the Washington Senators, 7-5, and the Cleveland Indians nipped the Detroit Tigers, 9-8. The unbeaten Spahn, who turned 37 on April 23, struck out seven and yielded five hits in becoming the first six game winner of the season. All six of his wins are com plete games and he allowed a total of 12 runs in them. Spahn himself smashed a run scoring triple and Del Cran dall and Johnny Logan hom ered for the big blows in the Braves' eight-hit attack. Spahn already holds the NL record of eight 20-victory seasons by a left-hander and if he makes this No. 9 he'll stand a good chance to finish his career as the biggest lefty winner in league history. Those ahead of him are Vic Willis, 244, Carl Hubbell, 253, and Eppa Rixey, 266. .Musial Adds Three Musial, who achieved his 3,000th hit on Tuesday, hom ered in his first appearance at the plate Wednesday night and added two singles for three of the Cardinals' nine hits. ' Vinegar Bend Mizell pitched a four-hitter as the Cardinals ran their" winning streak to seven games and climbed into fifth place. Bob Turley struck out seven and pitched a four-hitter for his third shutout and the Yankees' sixth in 20 games. Stock cars of the 1949-53 vintage will be featured this season and the most success ful program in recent years could result, according to Bry ant. Along with the old hard toppers from last year a lot of new men will be competing for the prize money. A world championship La Mans type start will be fea tured opening day at the track. In this type of start, the drivers line up away from the cars and at the drop of the flag a scramble is made to get in the cars and on the track to begin the race. Vern and -Dave Fraysher are building a cross-eyed 1951 Studebaker for Lou Kurz, which is considered to be one of the unique cars of the sea son. Elmer Sisemore will drive a Studebaker for De Leigh Motors. . Hawkinson Tire com pany will have , a number of cars on hand as usual, and Marvin Motors will have a Hudson and a Dodge convert ible. Moore Will Attend UO Portland (uV-Glenn Moore, 6-8 inch center for Klamath Falls High school's state championship basketball team, plans to attend the University of Oregon, the Journal said it learned today. Moore was the most sought after prep basketball player in the state. Earlier, Dave Robinson, 6-4 all-state guard for Klamath Falls, announced he would go to Oregon. Rookies Pace Rochester Win By UNITED PRESS Duke Cannel, a young, hard-hitting outfielder dest ined for stardom with the St. Louis Cardinals, is making an auspicious debut in the Inter national league. Carmel recently acquired by Rochester, hit his third homer in five days to lead the Red Wings to a 7-3 vic tory at Buffalo Wednesday night. He hit his fourth-inning blast with one man on to put Rochester ahead at that point.' Gene Oliver, another 21-year-old rookie, also con nected for a two-run homer for the winners. Although there were several limits taken and many anglers caught enough to make it interesting, the general overall picture wasn't as rosy as it was a week ago. Largest fish recorded to date from Fish lake was 21 inches. There must be some monsters in the lake for a lady reports that while she dozed in the warm sunshine "some thing" picked up her wiggly worm and slowly swam away. Swam away with, the hook, the sinker and a part of the line. Last year a fish was landed that weighed in the neighborhood of 12 pounds so there must be more of them. Still fishing with worms and eggs was still the best pro cedure in these two lakes with trolling still on the slow side. NEED KNOW-HOW Squaw lake is still paying off to the "know-how" fish ermen and the fish are run ning well into the "teen" c 1 a s s size-wise. Same Liston. He. took a step toward a title chance, though, Wednes day night wTien he finished trial-horse Julio Mederos,' a rugged Cuban, with a 3rd round technical knockout in the weekly television match. Mederos, who has won only 21 of 43 pro bouts, was pre vented . from coming out for the third round by the ring side physician, Dr. Irving N. Slott, due to a cut completely through his lip on the lower left side. Last Saturday the fishing really broke loose on the Up per Klamath. According to a phoned report from Bob Sloan of Harriman's resort, nearly every boat took the limit. Bob says it was common for a boat with two anglers to bring in their 10 fish. Ed Rouff of Klamath Falls landed a 6-pound fish and his son tagged along with one at 4V4. Most of the fish taken ran 18 inches; and better, and the larger portion of them were taken right off the mouth of Harriman Creek. As usual, the early season pattern of fishing is the same. Fender and worms is first choice with any red fluores cent lure coming a close sec ond. Best lures in the bright red were Flatfish, Andy Keek er and Dare-Devil. Last Sunday -the weather was so bad here that the fish ing was nil. Most of the an glers did their fishing indoors. The weather has cleared again and this week-end could be another repeat of last Satur day. NEW FACILITIES Of interest is the news that Harriman's ' now has modern trailer facilities along with the cabins and campgrounds. New boat docks are being installed for those who like lo leave their boals. The boats are well protected in this wind less cove on Harriman creek and a watchman is always in attendance. WORD OF WARNING A word of warning! Some fishermen did not understand that the streams running into the Rogue, Illinois and Apple gate are closed to angling. The wording of the law, "The Rogue and its tributaries," takes in all the streams in this area. Some fishing has been done on these streams already by well meaning but misin formed anglers. (International) Winter Olympic Date Changed Tokyo (IP) The Interna tional Olympic committee handed down its first major decisions Wednesday when members set back the . dates of the 1960 Squaw Valley, Calif., winter games and de leted bobsled events. At today's imeeting the world group was expected to settle details of the track and field events which will be held in Rome. Another order of business was the question of whether to break the 84-year-old tradition of barring the press from IOC meetings. Committee Chairman Av ery arundage said the deci sion to hold the winter games from Feb. 18. to 28- was made when some members thought the original dates were too early.
