Board of Control Approves Farm Superintendent Salem OF) The State Board of Control has accepted a report of its farm utiliza tion committee to hire a sup erintendent for all farm op erations at the state institutions. The state now has farm operations at Fairview, the penitentiary annex and Cot tage Farm here; MacLaren school for boys at Woodburn; Eastern Oregon State hospi tal at Pendleton; and pro posed operations at the inter mediate penal institution here and Damasch state hospital near Portland. The farm operations pro vide food for state institutions and the new manager would standardize and coordinate farm practices, eliminating duplication and' working out farm policy with institution heads and the Board of Control. The committee found farm cost records and procedures inadequate and recommend ed a simple farm cost account ing system for each institution. The group advised the Board of Control to sell the Williams and Hart property of 400 acres because it was too far from the state prison. Also to be sold was the 192 acre colony farm in Polk county, the 920 - acre Reith ranch at Eastern Oregon State hospital and - the Mac Laren dairy herd. State institutions now op erate about 5,000 acres of farm land. Total return from selling farm property is estimated at from $300,000 to $340,000. Gov. Robert D. Holmes esti mated the farm streamlining program would save the state thousands of dollars a year.
