I A Tendency To Bleed Many persons ask me what to do about profuse bleeding. Perhaps they have bled se verely and for too long a time after the removal of a tooth. Some women bleed too h e a v ily with each pe riod, and then o c c asionally the physician w o n d e rs if this can be due to something wrong with the blood rather than with the womb. Many women wonder why they get so many black and blue spots under the skin when they can not remember having bumped themselves anywhere. When I get concerned about such troubles in a patient I turn him or her over to an expert in diseases of the blood. I am not conversant enough with this field of medicine to give much advice in it. The special ist (hematologist) will have available a laboratory in which a number of tests can be made to see if there is any thing wrong with the clotting mechanism of the blood, and, if so, what exactly is wrong and what it means. The clot ting mechanism is a very complicated one, and one that can fail at a number of places in the chain of chemical pro cesses. Sometimes, when the diagnosis is made, something can be done about the situa tion. The parents of a boy who had inherited hemophilia (the dread bleeding disease that wrecked the lives of some sons of the last king of Spain) really ought quickly to move to some city in which perhaps there is a medical school, and in it a teacher of hematology. Then, when suddenly one day, the lad starts to bleed terribly, there will be someone around who knows the last word about the disease and what i can be done to help. Fever Convulsions I recently read an article by Dr. M. G. Peterman, of Milwaukee, who answers the question that so many anxious mothers ask, which is, "Will the small child who now goes into convulsions when he has fever have epilepsy later in life?" Dr. Peterman says that 74 per cent of these children have an abnormal electro encephalogram which sug guests that there is something wrong with the brain, and often this abnormality is of' epileptic type. Other neuro logists have gathered statistics which show that "more than half of the children who have convulsions in childhood tend to have convulsions later. Dr. Peterman points out that the children most likely to have trouble later are those who have a prolonged con vulsion, which lasts over half an hour, or those who have what is called a focal convul sion, in which only an arm or a leg twiches. The outlook is particularly bad when there is a family history of convul sions or other - troubles sug gesting a poor nervous in heritance. Dr. Peterman says one can get an epileptic type of a his tory in almost half the cases. In my experience, in another quarter of the cases one can get a history of mental trouble, or a terrible temper, or mental reardation. Dermalomyosilis Many unhappy people write asking if there is any hope for a person with dermato myositis. All I can say is, see a good physician who will perhaps work with a skin specialist. I recently read an interesting article on the sub ject by Drs. L. L. Hoaglin, Jr., G. Hal Demay, W. B. Moody, and J. R. Schenken. As they say, often in the earliest stages of the disease, the diagnosis is difficult. At the beginning, there may appear small blood vessels in the skin, or there may be some swelling of the eye-lids or of the V-area in the front of the neck (just above the breast bone.) These changes may persist for from months to years. Later there may come a bronze-colored discoloration of areas of skin. Then the muscles here and there may become weak and some may swell, especially around the shoulders, the arms and the neck. The muscles may be tender and somewhat edematous (they pit on pressure). There may be some trouble with swallowing, and talking and breathing. Some fingers may turn white, as in Raynaud's disease. If the eye-specialist looks into the back of the eyes, he may see a number of changes which indicate serious disease of the blood vessels or the kidneys. The differential diagnosis may have to be made between dis seminated lupus erythe matosus, diffuse scleroderma (hardening of the skin) Ray naud's disease, trichinosis, and myasthenia gravis. Often the question is settled by cutting out a little piece of muscle and examining sections of it under the microscope. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail. i (Released by The Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1958) Col Morthrup Talks At Reserve Meeting Col. G. G. Northrup, deputy commander of the Fourth Air Force, Hamilton Air Force base, Calif., discussed the role of reservists at the regular meeting of the 9091st Air Force reserve group here this week. He said the reservist's role is one of public relations. The most important role is a large reserve plus regular Air Force personnel, he noted. Col. Northrup said he did not believe a reduction in taxes was in order, since the need for missiles is important to the country's defense. The first Century Farm fam ilies will be proclaimed at ceremonies at the 1958 state fair in Salem. Families who can prove that the land now farmed has been in the family since 1858, or earlier, will qualify, department spokesmen said. Applicants may contact coun ty judges to show proof of ownership and family hold ings. A farm for the century designation will follow the census of agriculture defini tion. That is, it must have three" acres or more of land producing agriculture pro ducts worth $150 or more each year. A Century Farm will be one owned continuously since 1858 or earlier in the same family. It may have passed from the original owner to brothers and sisters or sons and daughters and through them to children's children or adopted children.
