(International) Early Action on Klamath Indian Assets Stressed Washington (IB The Senate Interior Committee Tuesday called for "early and decisive" congressional action to revise existing laws for dis . posal of tribal assets of the Klamath Indian reservation in Oregon. The committee said quick approval of a bill by Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) is necessary to avert "econom ic catastrophe" in. southeast ern Oregon and prevent "des truction of the nation's larg est remaining pine forest." ; The committee said Neuber ger's bill would provide for "continued sustained - yield management of the Indian forest, either under private or federal ownership, and will assure the Indians a fair mar ket value for their timber." To Provide Cash : A 1952 law setting ip ter mination of federal super vision over the tribe requires ales of the. Indian timber and other assets to provide cash payments to those who wish to withdraw from the tribe. Last month 77 per cent of the 2,133 Indians enrolled in tH Klamath tribe voted to leave and take their share of tribal assets in cash, the com mittee said. The interior group added that unless Neuberger's bill is .enacted management spe cialists for the Klamaths will be "oblgated to sell on a de clining Pacific Northwest lumber market some 3.5 bil lion board feet of pine timber and 1,400,000 cords of pulp wood within a period of less than two years."
