As the unborn child develops, the mother needs addi tional protein, vitamins, and minerals. Multiple vitamins have been designed especially to provide these for the pregnant woman when they cannot be furnished fully through special diets. The natural processes often are upset by pregnancy. To reduce acidity and heartburn and even prevent them there are special preparations to soothe the di gestive tract and provide extra protein. Another &d vantage is that they're nonfattening. To relieve constipation, there are gentle-acting com pounds such as a mineral -oil emulsion of phenolphtha lein and an extract of the senna plant, both of which are particularly recommended in pregnancy. Senna's value as a laxative has been known for centuries, but only lately has it been marketed in a stable, standardized form for general use. Hemorrhoids are another common complication in pregnancy. To combat these, there are suppositories which soothe and relieve congestion. Infections of the birth canal always have been a delicate problem for mothers-to-be. Another serious complication of pregnancy is toxemia, which usually appears after the sixth month and which causes thousands of stillbirths a year. With this condi tion, the woman's blood pressure rises and there is danger of convulsions. Recently, however, drugs such as reserpine and hy dralazine hydrochloride have proved effective against toxemias of pregnancy, decreasing blood pressure and increasing blood flow through the kidneys. In one group of 100 cases, good results were reported in 91, and fair results in the remaining nine. A pharmaceutical development of recent months is use of a female sex hormone which combats perhaps the most important problem in obstetrics today pre mature birth. Made from sow ovaries and the result of more than 30 years' investigation, the drug is used to halt premature labor. This can be a godsend, of course, in cases where additional days or even weeks are necessary to insure the birth of a living, healthy baby. It also is used in full-term deliveries to facilitate labor and reduce pain. So all hail the American baby!
